HMRC offers Tax Free Childcare for school and nursery pupils

Tax-Free Childcare can be used flexibly to pay for childminders, wraparound and holiday childcare.
Hundreds of thousands of parents who recently found out their little one's September primary school place, can use Tax-Free Childcare to save thousands on wraparound childcare and holiday club costs HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has said.
Many working families will now be arranging childcare for the start and end of the school day, and with Tax-Free Childcare they can get financial support of up to £2,000 a year per child, or £4,000 if their child is disabled, towards the cost.
Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC's Director General for Customer Services, says: 'Starting school can be an expensive time, there's a lot to buy and there's also a lot to organise. Now you know where your child is going to school you can start organising your childcare and Tax-Free Childcare can help make the costs more manageable. Sign up to start saving today on GOV.UK.'
Tax-Free Childcare is a scheme that can be used to pay for any approved childcare so parents can arrange their childcare to suit them - whether that's wraparound care, a childminder, after school clubs or school holiday care.
For every £8 deposited in a Tax-Free Childcare account, the government tops it by £2 which means parents can receive up to £500 (or £1,000 if their child is disabled) every 3 months to use to pay for their childcare costs.
Parents can use the scheme to pay for childcare for children aged 11 or under, or up to 16 if the child has a disability.
It's quick and easy to apply on the HMRC website.

Your child must be 11 or under and usually live with you. They stop being eligible on September 1 after their 11th birthday. Adopted children are eligible, but foster children are not.
Neither parent can earn more than £100,000 a year after deductions.
If your child is disabled and usually lives with you, you may get up to £4,000 a year until 1 September after their 16th birthday. They're eligible for this if they:

HMRC says you can use it to pay for approved childcare, for example:
Your childcare provider must be signed up to the scheme before you can pay them and benefit from tax-free childcare. It's a good idea to check with your provider to see if they're signed up beforehand.
If your child is disabled, you can use the extra tax-free childcare money you get to help pay for extra hours of childcare. You can also use it to help pay your childcare provider so they can get specialist equipment for your child such as mobility aids.
Once an account is opened, parents can deposit money and use it straight away or keep it in the account to use it whenever it's needed. Any unused money in the account can be withdrawn at any time.

Former world darts champion, 34, is BANNED as company director for five years over failure to pay £450k tax bill

Rob Cross has been banned as a company director for five years after his business failed to pay more than £450,000 in tax. The ban prevents him from being involved in the promotion, formation or management of a company, without the permission of the court, until June 2030. The 2018 world champion set up Rob Cross Darts Limited in 2017 to receive prize money and it took in more than £1.4million in winnings and sponsorship as he embarked on the most successful spell of his career. But, before Mr Cross liquidated the company in 2023, he took out £300,000, which should have been paid to creditors, including to His Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC). He also took more than £400,000 from the company in the form of a director's loan before the company was liquidated. Meanwhile, £665,419 was paid into the personal account of someone with links to Mr Cross. By the time it went into liquidation, Rob Cross Darts Limited owed the taxman £465,403. The 34-year-old, who is playing in the Nordic Masters in Copenhagen this weekend, entered into an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) last year and will make monthly contributions to pay off the money he owes. Kevin Read, chief investigator at the Insolvency Service, said: 'When directors fail to pay the correct amount of tax, it directly impacts the government's ability to fund vital public services such as the NHS, schools, transport infrastructure and our national defence.'

Fury at Labour plans to claw back tax from millions of pensioners entitled to Winter Fuel Payment

FIVE million pensioners face paying extra tax to claw back their winter fuel allowance following Labour's U-turn, it is claimed. It comes after Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed yesterday that the benefit will be reinstated for many this winter as officials thrash out how many more elderly people will receive it. 1 Treasury staff are understood to be working on an announcement which will come as early as next week's Spending Review - following last week's backtrack. But it will come at a price - with one solution on the cards to have OAPs footing the bill. Around half of those entitled to the allowance - with annual incomes over £37,000 - would repay the money later through higher tax bills, reports The Times. This would include the likelihood of recouping the allowance from estates of those who died after receiving the benefit but before the tax settlement. There is speculation the government would have to ghoulishly chase the grieving families of those who passed in the interim. One Labour source told the Guardian: "We should never have scrapped the winter fuel allowance in the first place, but the whole process of reinstating it has been completely chaotic. "The optics of us demanding the money back from grieving families are dire." Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: "Most people now recognise that the winter fuel cut was a massive mistake. "Unite has been calling on the government to scrap the cut from day one and I was pleased when the PM finally acknowledged this. "This government needs to learn that when you are in a hole, you should stop digging. You can't leave pensioners in limbo while you work out plans for taxing the families of the deceased - just reverse it now. "We are the sixth richest economy in the world, and we need to stop picking the pockets of pensioners and bring in a wealth tax." Speaking in Rochdale on Wednesday, Ms Reeves said: 'We have also listened to the concerns that people had about the level of the means test. So we will be making changes to that. "They will be in place so that pensioners will be paid for this coming winter." However, pensioners are being warned that not everyone in the age cohort will be eligible. The warning shot was fired after Sir Keir Starmer last week insisted that more pensioners would receive up to £300 a year. The government brought an end to the universal winter fuel benefits last July within a month of coming into power. But when pressed about whether the winter fuel payment would return across the board, Pensions Minister Torsten Bell said the answer was 'no'. He said: 'The principle I think most people, 95% of people, agree, that it's not a good idea that we have a system paying a few hundreds of pounds to millionaires, and so we're not going to be continuing with that. 'But we will be looking at making more pensioners eligible.' He added that he did't have 'lots to add' above what the Prime Minister has said in recent days. The decision comes after Labour's support partially collapsed in last month's local elections - with much support heading to Nigel Farage's Reform UK. The PM paved the way for a partial u-turn over the government's decision to strip winter fuel payments from millions of pensioners. The Prime Minister said 'as the economy improves', he wanted to look at widening eligibility for the payments worth up to £300. However, officials have been unable to say how many more pensioners would be eligible. The decision last year to axe the universal payment meant the number of pensioners receiving the payment was reduced by around 10 million, from 11.4 million to 1.5 million. Pension credit is the primary benefit by which pensioners can receive the winter fuel payment. The credit tops up incomes for poorer pensioners and acts as a gateway to additional support, including the winter fuel payment. How do I apply for pension credit? YOU can start your application up to four months before you reach state pension age. Applications for pension credit can be made on the government website or by ringing the pension credit claim line on 0800 99 1234. You can get a friend or family member to ring for you, but you'll need to be with them when they do. You'll need the following information about you and your partner if you have one: National Insurance number Information about any income, savings and investments you have Information about your income, savings and investments on the date you want to backdate your application to (usually three months ago or the date you reached state pension age) You can also check your eligibility online by visiting first. If you claim after you reach pension age, you can backdate your claim for up to three months.

Rob Cross gets five-year director ban as former darts world champion punished over unpaid tax

"Voltage" is facing suspension until 2030 after payments issue Former World Darts champion Rob Cross has received a five-year ban as a director after his company failed to pay over £400,000 in tax. The 2018 king of the Alexandra Palace has been disqualified with commentary on the situation coming today from The Insolvency Service. ‌ Rob Cross Darts Limited was set up in May 2017 to receive prize money, but it was liquidated in 2023. ‌ During that time he failed to pay more than £400,000 to HMRC while also withdrawing £300,000 in money which should have been paid to creditors. "Voltage" has now entered an Individual Voluntary Arrangement to pay the monies off and how much he will contribute via this arrangement depends upon his earnings at darts tournaments. Kevin Read, chief investigator at the Insolvency Service, said: 'When directors fail to pay the correct amount of tax, it directly impacts the government's ability to fund vital public services such as the NHS, schools, transport infrastructure, and our national defence. 'Rob Cross's company owed more than £400,000 in corporation tax alone when it went into liquidation. 'For more than three years, he withdrew funds from the company which should have gone to HMRC and other creditors. 'This case demonstrates that we will pursue action against directors who deprive the public purse of much-needed funds. ‌ 'The rules apply equally to everyone in business, and we expect all company directors to comply with their legal responsibilities. 'Enforcing these rules consistently is crucial in maintaining a level playing field and preventing companies from gaining an unfair competitive advantage over compliant businesses that properly fulfil their tax obligations.'
