Performance statistics highlight contrasting strengths
Dembele, who plays for Paris Saint-Germain, finished the 2024–25 season with 33 goals and 13 assists, including two assists in PSG's Champions League final victory over Inter Milan. He was named the Champions League Player of the Season and won the Ligue 1 Golden Boot.
Live Events
Yamal, the 17-year-old Barcelona winger, recorded 18 goals and 25 assists across all competitions, while playing over 4,500 minutes, significantly more than Dembele's 3,286. Despite a lower goal tally, Yamal led in dribbles, duels won, and possession recovery.
In per-90 metrics, Dembele edged Yamal in shots (5.2 vs. 4.4), touches in the opposition box (9.2 vs. 7.5), and passing success (82.8 per cent vs. 78.9 per cent). Yamal, however, surpassed Dembele in dribble volume (9 vs. 4.6) and dribble success (53.5 per cent vs. 44.4 per cent).
Dembele's resurgence underlines Ballon d'Or credentials
Dembele's 2024–25 campaign marked a major turning point in his career. After years of injuries and inconsistency, the French forward returned to form following a tactical shift in December, when PSG manager Luis Enrique moved him from right wing to center forward.

The change triggered a run of 18 goals in 10 games, propelling Dembele to a 33-goal season total, including 21 in Ligue 1. He also added key contributions in the Nations League, scoring in wins over Belgium and Croatia.
Luis Enrique endorsed Dembele's Ballon d'Or candidacy, citing his defensive work and leadership in addition to his offensive production. Dembele's summer will continue with Paris Saint-Germain in the FIFA Club World Cup, offering another platform to strengthen his case for the individual honor.
Yamal delivers breakthrough season with historic impact
Lamine Yamal's 2024–25 campaign included a La Liga title, Copa del Rey, and Spanish Super Cup with Barcelona, as well as a European Championship with Spain. He was named to the Champions League team of the year after consistent performances, including three goals in four El Clasico matches and standout displays against Inter Milan.
Yamal, who debuted for Barcelona at age 15, has now surpassed 100 senior appearances. His Champions League and domestic form drew praise from high-profile opponents and coaches, including Simone Inzaghi.

He recently signed a six-year contract extension with Barcelona, and the CIES Football Observatory valued him at €400 million. While still eligible for three more Ballon d'Or cycles before turning 21, Yamal remains focused on development over recognition.

Marseille's Adrien Rabiot Up For Sale After 'Extremely Violent' Bust-Up In Dressing Room
Last Updated: Marseille had called the players' behaviour "unacceptable" in a brief club statement published on Tuesday. Marseille president Pablo Longoria announced on Wednesday that the club has decided to place star player Adrien Rabiot and English winger Jonathan Rowe on the transfer list due to an 'extremely violent" dressing room altercation. 'What happened was extremely serious and violent, something I've never encountered before," Longoria told AFP in an interview. 'We had to make a decision because what occurred went far beyond what is acceptable in a football club, as it would in any organisation." The incident took place following Friday's 1-0 defeat away to Rennes in their opening match of the French Ligue 1 season, a game Marseille lost to a stoppage-time goal after playing for an hour with an extra man. Marseille condemned the players' behaviour as 'unacceptable" in a brief club statement released on Tuesday. 'I wasn't in the dressing room, but the staff who were told me it was incredible, violent, aggressive, and went beyond any limits," said 39-year-old Spaniard Longoria, who has been Marseille president since 2021. The incident is a significant setback for the 1993 Champions League winners, who finished second in Ligue 1 last season to qualify for Europe's elite club competition. 'Roberto De Zerbi has been coaching for 13 years, and (sporting director) Medhi Benatia has been in top-level football for 22 years. I started out in professional football 20 years ago," Longoria added. 'I think we all have enough experience to say we have never seen anything like it in a dressing room… Even in the worst punch-ups, there are rules. Not in this case." England Under-21 international winger Rowe spent last season on loan at OM from Norwich City, and that deal was made permanent in the summer. The 30-year-old Rabiot, who has 53 caps for France, joined Marseille at the beginning of last season as a free agent after leaving Juventus. He had an outstanding first campaign at the Velodrome, but Marseille have not succeeded in persuading the former PSG midfielder to extend a contract which will expire at the end of this season. However, Longoria insisted that the decision to put Rabiot up for sale was not related to his contractual situation. 'The decision was very clear. It protects the club as an institution and it protects our season going forward. It is not negotiable for me to be president of a club where there are no rules," Longoria added. 'Honestly, as a club, we are the victims in this situation. A fight like this is unheard of in the world of football." Marseille's second game of the Ligue 1 season will be at home to newly-promoted Paris FC on Saturday. When the White House posted a picture of USA President Donald Trump inside the Oval Office, football fans were quick to notice the FIFA Club World Cup trophy. Leon Bailey Leaves Premier League, Joins AS Roma On Loan From Aston Villa
In a statement, Roma said that they have an option to make Bailey's one-year loan move permanent, reportedly for a fee of 22 million euros AS Roma have signed Jamaican international winger Leon Bailey on loan from Aston Villa, the Serie A club announced on Wednesday. Roma stated that they have an option to make Bailey's one-year loan move permanent, reportedly for a fee of 22 million euros ($25.6 million, £19 million). Bailey, 28, arrives in Italy after four years at Aston Villa, where he scored 22 goals in 144 appearances. Now coached by Gian Piero Gasperini, Roma aim to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2018. They host Bologna on Saturday in the opening round of fixtures in the 2025/26 Serie A season. Paris FC sign Trapp German international goalkeeper Kevin Trapp returned to France for a second spell on Wednesday, signing for newly-promoted Paris FC from Bundesliga outfit Eintracht Frankfurt. The 35-year-old, capped nine times, has signed a three-year contract with Paris FC, who are backed by the Arnaults, one of the world's wealthiest families. They opened their campaign — their first in France's top flight in 46 years — in disappointing fashion with a 1-0 defeat away at Angers on Sunday. 'Paris FC is proud to welcome Kevin," the club said in a statement. Trapp previously played for their city rivals Paris Saint-Germain from 2015 to 2018, and was a regular in the side that won the Ligue 1 title in 2016 before gradually falling out of favour. He returned to Eintracht — for whom he had played from 2012 to 2015 — on loan in 2018 before signing permanently. Trapp played in the side that won the Europa League in 2022, and was man of the match in the final against Rangers. He then helped Eintracht finish third in the Bundesliga last term, the first time they had made the top three since 1993. He will bring the experience at the top level that for the moment is lacking in 22-year-old Obed Nkambadio, who was first choice last season and played in the Angers game. Paris FC's next challenge is away in the febrile atmosphere of the Stade Velodrome at Marseille, who also lost their opener 1-0 to Rennes.
