Daily Maila day ago
Tennis star Maria Sakkari believed she had come to the rescue of a bug during her match at the Washington Open, only to see the critter squashed just moments later.
The Greek player had been in action against American rival Emma Navarro in the last-16 of the event.
Sakkari briefly delayed play after spotting a bug on the court, with the 29-year-old the seen bending down and carefully picking up up.
The bug walked on Sakkari's hand as she calmly walked towards the back off the court, before attempting to blow it away.
Sakkari eventually placed the bug down with the star hoping to have taken it away from harm as the match progressed.
'Good work from Sakkari, taking care of the local wildlife,' the commentator remarked.

Greek tennis star Maria Sakkari was seen picking up a bug off the court during her match
The bug was briefly shown by the cameras before a ball kid's trainer squashed the critter
'Very delicately done,' they added.
Footage showed, however, that the bug's reprieve was only a momentary one.
As cameras lingered on it at the back of the court, a ball boy's trainer was seen stamping down and squashing it.
The incident prompted surprised reactions from both Sakkari and the commentator.
'Oh dear me,' the commentator said, adding 'the ball kid didn't get the memo'.
Cameras then panned around to Sakkari, who responded to the bizarre moment with smile as she quickly then switched her focus to returning Navarro's serve.
Sakkari would ultimately come through the match impressively, with the wildcard earning 7-5, 7-6 win over tournament second seed Emma Navarro.
The former world No 3, who reached the French Open and US Open semi-finals in 2021, will now meet Britain's Emma Raducanu in the quarter-finals.
Raducanu earned an impressive 6-4 6-2 victory over former world No 1 Naomi Osaka to book her place in the last eight.
The British star has met Sakkari three times in her career to date and won on each ocassion.
Their most notable meeting came at the US Open in 2021, with Raducanu winning in straight sets in their semi-final.
Raducanu famously went on to clinch the title, becoming the first qualifier to win a major.

Emma Raducanu makes worrying comment ahead of Washington Open semi-final clash

Emma Raducanu has made a worrying admission ahead of her semi-final clash against Anna Kalinskaya at the Washington Open on Saturday. The British tennis star has reached the last four at a WTA Tour event for the first time this year and has been in brilliant form at the American tournament. Raducanu stunned seventh-seed Marta Kostyuk before knocking out four-time major champion Naomi Osaka and former world No.3 Maria Sakkari. Next up is a showdown with Russia's Kalinskaya – and ahead of that match – Raducanu admits she is 'really struggling' with the heat in Washington. Temperatures reached 36 degrees during Raducanu's 6-4 7-5 win over Sakkari on Friday, with the Briton saying the conditions felt like 'you have just opened an oven and it just stayed open and your head is in there'. Raducanu, looking to reach her first WTA Tour final since winning the US Open four years ago, said in her press conference: 'I would like to say I'm pretty good in the heat, for the most part, but I was really struggling today. 'It was one of the toughest matches conditions-wise I have ever played in. Those points in the second set, I was getting a bit wobbly. I'm just happy I could close it out and it was two sets.' Raducanu had her vitals checked in a medical timeout late into the second set during her win over Sakkari. The 22-year-old had only just broken Sakkari's serve when the doctor was called onto the court. 'It was brutal today,' Raducanu added. 'Thank you to everyone for coming out and sitting through the heat. 'It's incredibly difficult playing, but actually, when I've sat and watched matches, in the heat when you're not moving, it's even harder. 'It's for sure physical, because if you don't have the abilities then your body will fail you. But at a certain point, it then becomes mental. 'I knew after the first or second game, it was such a long match, the first set was over an hour. 'It is mental and you just have to enjoy suffering as bad as that sounds, you just know you have to leave it all out on the court until you probably drop. More Trending 'I'm not feeling the best right now, so I just need to go and speak to the doctors.' The two players are set to lock horns around 9pm UK time today (Saturday, July 26) with the clash being shown live on Sky Sports Tennis. Rangers vs Middlesbrough LIVE score and goal updates from Ibrox friendly ahead of Champions League crunch

Rangers take on Middlesbrough this afternoon as they prepare for that crucial UEFA Champions League second-leg trip to face Panathinaikos in the white-hot Athens atmosphere. With a sizeable travelling support expected to make the trip north for this pre-season friendly hoping to make their own noise, Rob Edwards' team will provide useful opposition as they step up their prep ahead of the start of the EFL Championship campaign. For Russell Martin, this represents a chance to get some minutes in the legs of some of his squad, while also allowing others to compete for a spot in Wednesday night's team in the Greek capital. There will be no Rangers reunion this afternoon with former centre-half George Edmundson after 'the Fridge' was ruled out with a calf injury, as he and Boro star man Finn Azaz face a race against time to be fit for the Championship curtain raiser in a few weeks' time. It's a last chance for Martin to get a look at his team ahead of the all-important Euro tie on Wednesday. You can follow all the action with us LIVE right here. 12:08Andy MacKay Strachan's Scots' Guards Gordon Strachan arrived at the Riverside in October 2009 after leaving Celtic that summer and the former Parkhead boss leant heavily on his old club for recruits, with the likes of Stephen McManus, Scott McDonald, Willo Flood and Barry Robson all arriving during his ill-fated 12-month spell in the dugout. But the Teesside Tartan imports didn't stop there, as Strachan also brought in three players with Rangers connections as he prepared his side for an assault on the Championship. Andy Halliday was brought in from Livingston and would go on to play for his boyhood heroes later in his career, while Kris Boyd left Ibrox on a Bosman for Boro and Kevin Thomson arrived in a switch worth a reported £2m. The Scottish revolution would not work out well for Strachan, as he left the Riverside in October of that year, departing having chosen to end his contract without compensation, a move that saw Boro Chairman Steve Gibson praise the former Scotland boss as 'a man of great integrity'. 12:04Andy MacKay No Rangers reunion for Edmundson Middlesbrough have made the trip north to Glasgow for this afternoon's pre-season run out, but there will be no Rangers reunion for Boro defender George Edmundson, who along with star man Finn Azaz face a race against time to be fit for the start of the EFL Championship season. Edmundson joined Rangers under Steven Gerrard in 2019 and contributed some stellar showings in his first season, most notably on Europa League duty where 'the Fridge' - as he came to be affectionately known - put on a player of the match performance in Portugal as Ryan Kent's lightning-quick counter attack secured a 1-0 (and 4-2 agg.) victory over Ruben Amorim's Braga side. He would then go on to bag his side's goal in a 3-1 loss to a Kai Havertz-inspired Bayer Leverkusen in the next round. Things wouldn't go quite to plan the following season as Edmundson was suspended by the club along with Jordan Jones - another player to play for both sides - after the pair attended a party that broke the then-regulations during the Covid pandemic. His Rangers career failed to recover after that, initially joining Derby on loan the following January before a permanent switch to Ipswich followed in the summer of 2021 as Rangers celebrated their 55th league title win. 12:03Andy MacKay Cavenagh spying mission key to Rangers takeover It's been revealed that Andrew Cavenagh was convinced to pull the trigger on the Rangers takeover this summer after an impromptu spying mission in amongst punters in the Copeland Road stand during a match taken in by the American healthcare tycoon. 11:56Andy MacKay Rak-Sakyi injury fears Rangers have been in the market for an exciting attacking option all summer but could be left facing a sweat over a major target liked by manager Russell Martin and the recruitment team as Jesurun Rak-Sakyi was forced off playing for Crystal Palace in pre-season.
