Nicholas Saputra surprise, Siti Nurhaliza and Amy Search spotted in crowd as Melly Goeslaw dazzles at third Malaysia concert

Malay Mail03-06-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, June 3 — Indonesian singer Melly Goeslaw's third concert in Malaysia in three years proved to be yet another resounding success. Some 6,000 fans turned up to watch her perform at her recent concert 'Ada Apa Dengan Melly...? Prom Nite' at Axiata Arena Bukit Jalil here.
They were there not just to watch Melly perform but to relive the magical moments of their youth through her songs which are synonymous with Indonesian film soundtracks. Known as Indonesia's Lady Gaga due to her unique fashion sense, Melly proved that music is more than mere entertainment — it is a language of emotion that unites two nations.
Melly's opening number was 'Ku Bahagia', after which she took the audience on a journey through time, touching on themes of adolescence, first love and unrequited love.
'I'm grateful for this special opportunity and for being accepted by the Malaysian audience. Thank you for still listening to and feeling my music. Even though we speak different languages, we are united through the heart,' she said.
As a tribute to her singer friends in Malaysia, Melly also performed a medley of iconic local songs such as 'Janji Manismu' (by Datuk Aishah), 'Aku Cinta Padamu' (Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza) and 'Isabella' (Search), creating a deeply meaningful moment.
In a touching display of support, Siti Nurhaliza and Datuk Amy Search, who were both seated among the audience, rose to their feet and sang along with Melly.

That magical moment became even more perfect with the appearance of Indonesian actor Nicholas Saputra, famed for his role as Rangga in the Indonesian film 'Ada Apa Dengan Cinta', who delivered a heartfelt poetry recital.
In addition to melancholic ballads, Melly energised the crowd with upbeat numbers like 'Pencinta Wanita', 'Hey Ladies' and 'Tak Tahan Lagi', with the performance further enlivened by a special collaboration with rising Indonesian singer Dhinda Ghania.
Popular Malaysian singer Aina Abdul also captivated the audience with her powerful solo performance of 'Cinta'.
Throughout the two-and-a-half-hour concert, Melly, who is also a composer, appeared in four avant-garde outfits, each showcasing the bold and unique elements synonymous with the Indonesian diva.
Towards the end of the concert, Melly shared a heartfelt wish: 'Allow me to keep coming here (to Malaysia) every year.'
The concert was a fitting complement to the two concerts she had held in Malaysia previously — 'Ada Apa Dengan Melly (Back To School)' in 2023 and 'Ada Apa Dengan Melly & Friends (Malam Graduasi)' in 2024. — Bernama

Jess Glynne slams White House for using her viral ‘Jet2 holiday' ad song in deportation video

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — British singer Jess Glynne has criticised the White House for using her song Hold My Hand in a social media post promoting immigration deportations. As reported by NME, the viral TikTok audio — originally tied to Jet2 holiday mishaps — was recently featured in an X video shared by the White House showing migrants being deported from the US. When ICE books you a one-way Jet2 holiday to deportation. Nothing beats it! — The White House (@WhiteHouse) July 29,2025 Glynne, whose 2015 hit is now associated with more than 1.9 million TikTok videos showing travel disasters, expressed outrage on Instagram, saying the post 'makes me sick' and that her music stands for 'love, unity, and spreading positivity — never division or hate'. The controversial X post comes amid a wave of deportations in the US that began in June, sparking protests and condemnation from several musicians including Bruce Springsteen, Green Day and Tom Morello.

Hyatt Place Kuala Lumpur's Valentina Cucina E Bar offers elevated dining with sweeping views of Bukit Jalil and authentic Italian dishes under Chef Markus Kúhni

KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 — Atop Hyatt Place Kuala Lumpur, this stylish spot offers a bird-eye's view of KL's urban skyline and a menu that celebrates cucina Italiana, presented in a modern style. Purists will be happy to know that Italian-Swiss Chef Markus Kúhni is at the helm to firmly steer the restaurant down the path of authentic Southern Italian style cooking. 'I will stick to traditional Italian classics as fusion is not my thing and you don't need to mix spices in it to make it flavourful.' Before arriving at Valentina, Kúhni cooked in the Middle East, China and Indonesia, where he once served as the 'Royal Chef' for the former Queen of Thailand. In Bali, he owns Swiss Chalet Grill & Bar Ubud with a partner. But he has not been to Malaysia before, which he is excited about. 'I decided to come here as I've never worked in Malaysia. It was always on the map but I never had the opportunity'. Ever since the restaurant opened about two years ago, it's always been in the hands of an Italian chef, as reflected in the menu composed of pasta, pizzas, main meals and desserts. Kúhni will also be working hard with his assistant, Chef Dominic Gossens, to add more of his signature dishes to the menu. Here, the hand crafted pastas come in various styles like orecchiette, gnocchi, rigatoni, maccheroni, accentuated by the different sauces. Don't overlook the Tortellini In Brodo (RM72) — slow cooked Wagyu beef stuffed inside the pockets of pasta with a delicate beef broth. Tortellini In Brodo (left) are morsels of pasta stuffed with slow cooked Wagyu beef served with a delicate beef broth while one can share the Calzone (right) with refreshing drinks like Signora Rosa, Giardino di Bacche and Frozen Margarita. — Pictures by Choo Choy May Ravioli Del Pastore (RM65) may be meat-free but you won't miss it as each ravioli is filled with fluffy sheep's milk ricotta, to be relished with a piece of creamy grilled aubergine and an arrabiata sauce rich in tomatoes but meek in heat. Calzone (RM55), a layered pizza bountifully stuffed with buffalo mozzarella, tomato sauce, button mushrooms and turkey ham, is best shared. For the main show, the magnificent Polpo Alla Griglia (RM190) or octopus cooked sous vide, impresses with a tender texture and lightly charred flavour, accompanied with a seafood stuffed croquette and saffron scented mashed potatoes. Tagliata Di Manzo is a fun way to relish tender Wagyu ribeye in playful combinations with beef 'au jus', salt, roasted garlic confit, porcini mixed mushrooms, pecorino truffle butter or the unusual light, crispy air bag potatoes. — Picture by Choo Choy May One can have tremendous fun mixing and matching the flavours, like combining truffle infused porcini mixed mushrooms with the meat, or perhaps mixing the velvety roast garlic confit with the truffle pecorino butter, or go the conventional way to just pour beef au jus or sprinkle salt over your steak. Dolci or desserts are not to be missed, especially the charming Tiramisù Semifreddo (RM44). Tiramisù Semifreddo reimagines the classic dessert in a modern style while maintaining its Italian soul with the flavours of coffee, mascarpone cream and chocolate. — Picture by Choo Choy May It may not look like your conventional tiramisu with distinct layers but here it's hidden like Russian dolls layer by layer, as you dig inside the dessert to discover different flavours nestled inside. Your first layer is a chocolate covered shell you crack open to reveal the creamy mascarpone semifreddo, with a third layer inside the centre with coffee ganache, mixed with Savidioari sponge fingers. Its Italian soul is undeniable with the combination of classic coffee, mascarpone and chocolate flavours. If the weather's good, try to enjoy your drink out on the swimming pool terrace with the view, perhaps a sunny afternoon aperitivo like a tall glass of Frozen Margarita, mocktail Giardino Di Bacche with wild berry shrub, cranberry and lemon, or a gin-based cocktail Signora Rosa with cointreau, lemon and grenadine, to kickstart your meal or a moody post-dinner digestivo like grappa or amaro, the Italian way to end a spectacular night out here. Chill out at the poolside terrace with a Frozen Margarita, shaken by Valentina Cucina E Bar's bartender. — Picture by Choo Choy May With Kúhni on board, the poolside terrace may also see more excitement too. 'I am excited as the location is great with the view and I will involve the swimming pool to maybe do more parties.' THE nation's largest all-Japan event, 'Japan Expo Malaysia 2025' (JEMY 2025), held on July 18-20 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), drew more than 20,000 visitors. Officiated by the Ambassador of Japan to Malaysia Noriyuki Shikata, the event, now in its sixth year, 'reaffirmed its role as a dynamic platform for Malaysia-Japan economic and cultural exchange, spanning trade, tourism, education and the creative industries'. Shikata said this year's expo once again demonstrated the strength of the countries' bilateral ties, while providing a unique blend of cultural and commercial experience for visitors from all walks of life. 'From business to tradition, the event truly captured the spirit of Japan-Malaysia collaboration,' he said during the his opening address at the event. The grand opening ceremony on 18 July was marked by a vibrant showcase, setting the tone for an immersive weekend. The audience was treated to high-energy performances by comedy trio 'wannabees', a mesmerising face-changing act by Enishi and the captivating rhythms of the Awa Odori dance troupe from Japan's Tokushima Prefecture. A major highlight of the ceremony was the inaugural Japan Expo Malaysia Awards, which honoured individuals and organisations for their impactful contributions to strengthening Japan-Malaysia relations. Among the recipients were Kyoto Protocol and Rine-Hime in the Entertainment category, Melinda Looi for Fashion and Ying Tze as Cosplayer of the Year, along with many others. Throughout the weekend, visitors were immersed in an exciting line-up of cultural and culinary experiences. Spanning two dedicated zones – Exhibition and Entertainment Zone, JEMY 2025 featured a diverse mix of experiences. In the Exhibition Zone, Chef Nao Kawasaki's dramatic Tuna Cutting Show drew a packed audience, offering a rare and captivating glimpse into the artistry of traditional Japanese seafood and sushi preparation. Academic collaboration was also in focus, with the University of Tsukuba presenting global education opportunities and research initiatives. The ESG Talk Series, a key feature of this year's programme, brought together thought leaders and change makers from Japan and Malaysia to discuss sustainability, green innovation and corporate responsibility. A particularly meaningful moment was the Live Painting and Silent Auction of 'The Crane of Internal Spring', an original piece created during the expo. Proceeds from the auction were pledged to an orphanage supporting underprivileged children, reinforcing the expo's spirit of community and inclusivity.
