Former MIC president G. Palanivel dies
KUALA LUMPUR: Former MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel died today. He was 76.
MIC vice-president Datuk T. Murugiah, when contacted by Bernama, confirmed that the former Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, died at the Kuala Lumpur Hospital at 8 am.
Born on March 1, 1949, in Penang, Palanivel began his career as a research officer at the National Museum for the Bujang Valley Project in 1973, before joining the Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) as a senior journalist in April 1977.
In 1984, he was appointed as the editor for domestic and economic news at the agency before being seconded as press secretary to then Works Minister, Tun S. Samy Vellu, from 1987 to 1990.
He had been actively involved in politics through MIC since the early 1970s and contested in the general election for the first time in 1990.
He won the Hulu Selangor parliamentary seat in the 1990 General Election and served as the MP for four consecutive terms before losing the seat in 2008.
Palanivel returned to Parliament in 2013 as Cameron Highlands MP.

'The Joint Statement would serve as a foundational commitment to strengthen education in the region over the next decade, focusing on issues such as the digital divide and limited access to technology; economic challenges and rising poverty; climate change, conflict and displacement; and inclusive policies for marginalised groups. 'For Malaysia, this will enhance collaboration with ASEAN countries and non-governmental organisations (NGO), especially in leveraging local knowledge, expertise, and networks to address OOSCY needs,' he told Bernama, here today. Aminuddin also expressed hope that the collaboration would improve educational cooperation within ASEAN to enhance access and ensure sustainable, context-appropriate interventions. Besides ASEAN member states and Timor Leste as an observer, the forum includes representatives from international organisations such as the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO). All Malaysians Registered With Malaysian Embassy In Tehran Are Safe
WORLD PUTRAJAYA, June 18 (Bernama) -- All Malaysians in Iran registered with the Embassy in Tehran are safe and accounted for, based on the latest information, the Foreign Ministry said. 'The ministry wishes to reassure the public that the safety and well-being of Malaysians abroad remain our utmost priority,' a spokesperson from the ministry said in a statement to the media on Wednesday. According to the spokesperson, the ministry, through the Embassy of Malaysia in Tehran, continues to monitor the evolving situation closely and stands ready to extend the necessary consular assistance. 'We remain in close coordination with all relevant agencies, both domestic and international, to ensure that appropriate support is provided to Malaysians in Iran, including facilitating their safe return, if required,' the spokesperson added. The spokesperson said, in light of the heightened risks, the ministry has activated its operations room effective June 17.
