Organ sale running rampant in Tamil Nadu? Health officials told to look into ‘liver trade'
Officials from the Directorate of Medical and Rural Health Services said they learned about the issue after media reports, but added that they have not yet received any complaint in this regard.
The reports mentioned that the woman was taken to the Chennai hospital a year ago by touts, who had promised her Rs 8 lakh for donating her kidney. Upon finding she was not a suitable donor, they offered to take her liver instead for Rs 4.5 lakh.
However, the woman alleged her gall bladder was also removed without her consent. The woman allegedly agreed to sell her kidney to repay a loan she had obtained at a high interest rate. Separated from her husband, she was left to single-handedly take care of her children, she had said.
Responding to reporters' questions on Monday, Health Minister Ma Subramanian said he was aware of the issue. In the kidney racket issue, a police complaint has been filed against two touts, and instructions were also given to take action if more hospitals are found to be involved, he said.
Recently, an organ racket that had targeted a group of handloom workers by luring them to sell their kidneys was busted in Namakkal district. The health department formed a committee, led by TN Health System Reform Programme project director S Vineeth as a special officer.
Based on the committee's report, the department suspended the kidney transplant licences of Cethar Hospital in Tiruchy and Dhanalakshmi Srinivasan Hospital in Perambalur, for their alleged involvement. Officials said investigation is under way to uncover more details regarding the operation of the kidney racket in Namakkal district.

KOCHI: Kochi corporation's new initiative to address the growing problem of sanitary and special care waste disposal -- biomedical waste treatment plant -- is expected to be commissioned in September. The Rs 3.45-crore plant, a first-of-its-kind initiative by a local body in the state, is nearing completion at the Brahmapuram waste dumping site. All biomedical waste, except hospital-generated waste falling under the hazardous category, can be incinerated at the new plant. On an average, around 100 tonnes of sanitary and special care waste are generated every month in Kochi, which includes sanitary napkins, diapers, and medical waste collected by government-approved agencies. 'Two government-approved agencies have currently collected more than two tonnes of sanitary and special care waste. This is being transported to the Kerala Enviro Infrastructure Ltd (KEIL) unit in Ambalamedu. Once the new plant is commissioned, we will be able to treat and dispose of the biomedical waste at Brahmapuram,' a senior health official with the Kochi corporation told TNIE.

Overhauling of BC hostels taken up to enhance standards: Minister S Savitha
VIJAYAWADA: The State government is undertaking a comprehensive overhaul of Backwards Classes (BC) hostels to provide students with education, health, and safety standards on par with corporate institutions. A new 100-mark grading system has been implemented to assess hostels based on student attendance, academic performance, cleanliness, and other parameters. Wardens of high-performing hostels will be given priority in transfers and promotions. In a press release, BC Welfare Minister S Savitha S Savithastated that under the leadership of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, the government has prioritised hostel development. As part of this initiative, SR Shankaran Resource Centres have been established in 104 hostels, and Rs 76.38 crore in pending diet charges from the previous administration have been cleared. To improve infrastructure, Rs 13.10 crore has been allocated for hostel repairs, while over Rs 20 crore has been mobilised through District Mineral Foundation (DMF), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) contributions, and other sources.

Health Minister Ma Subramanian assures med aid for liver donor from Namakkal
CHENNAI: After a 37-year-old woman from Namakkal district alleged that she was coerced into selling a part of her liver to a patient in Chennai, Health Minister Ma Subramanian on Tuesday said that the Namakkal district health officer has been instructed to make arrangements for her medical treatment. Speaking to reporters, the minister said the district health authorities have also been instructed to inquire into the allegations and take necessary action. More such cases are coming to light after the state government constituted an inquiry committee led by S Vineeth, Project Director of Tamil Nadu Health System Reform Programme, as a special officer, he said. The minister added that health officials have been instructed to provide assistance to the woman.
