What comes after school? A global study reveals why 39% of teens are unsure about their career paths

, a comprehensive study released by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), 39 percent of 15-year-olds are unclear about their career expectations.

Drawing on data from the 2022 Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA), which surveyed nearly 700,000 students in 81 countries, the report presents a sobering view of how unprepared many teenagers are for life beyond the classroom. Career uncertainty is not just a temporary phase: it is closely linked with poor outcomes in adulthood, including reduced employment opportunities, lower earnings, and higher risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training).
A snapshot of teenage career readiness
While the level of preparation varies widely across countries, the OECD report makes it clear that on average, too many students are poorly equipped for their next steps.
By age 15:
39 percent of students are unclear about their career expectations
21 percent are 'misaligned' in their career thinking—they expect to enter jobs that typically require a university degree, yet do not plan to pursue tertiary education
33 percent of students do not agree that school has taught them things that could be useful in a job
These findings point to a widespread disconnect between education systems and labour market realities. The report warns that without early, structured guidance, many students risk making decisions based on incomplete or misleading information.
Why teens are not clear about their careers
One of the key reasons for rising career uncertainty among teenagers is their limited exposure to the world of work. According to the OECD report, most students have not participated in the kinds of real-world activities that help build career clarity and direction.
By the age of 15:
Only 35 percent of students had attended a job fair
Just 45 percent had experienced a workplace visit or job shadowing
Such activities, whether it's a job fair, an internship, a career talk, or mentorship, can help students explore a range of professions, understand what different jobs actually involve, and begin to form realistic career goals.

These experiences are especially valuable for helping students connect their academic learning to practical outcomes.
However, the report shows that access to these opportunities is far from universal. Participation is particularly low among students from disadvantaged backgrounds, who often lack the networks, guidance, or institutional support needed to engage with employers or industry professionals.
As a result, many teenagers are left to make important life decisions without the insight or experience that could help them make informed choices.
Ambition shaped more by background than ability
The OECD study also highlights the role of social inequality in shaping students' career paths. Across the participating countries, a student's socio-economic background is a stronger predictor of educational ambition than academic performance. High-achieving students from low-income families are significantly less likely to expect to complete tertiary education than lower-performing peers from more affluent homes.
This creates what the report describes as a "misalignment" between career goals and the educational plans needed to achieve them. It also means that many bright students from disadvantaged backgrounds are underestimating their potential simply because they lack guidance and role models.
Too much information, not enough guidance
Despite having access to vast amounts of online career information, students are not necessarily making more informed decisions.
In fact, the report suggests that information overload without context can leave students more confused. Many end up choosing familiar, high-status careers like medicine, law, or engineering, regardless of actual labour market trends or their own qualifications.
Over 50 percent of students, according to the OECD, concentrate their career aspirations in just ten professions, even in countries where those fields are already saturated.
Meanwhile, growing sectors such as vocational trades, digital technology, healthcare support, and logistics remain largely overlooked.
What needs to change
The findings of the OECD report offer a clear call to action. Schools, policymakers, and employers all have a role to play in helping students prepare for their futures in a more informed and equitable way. Key recommendations include:
Starting career guidance early, ideally in middle school, before students have locked in major academic decisions
Providing regular, meaningful exposure to the world of work, through job shadowing, workplace visits, internships, and industry-led talks
Strengthening the role of teachers and school counselors, with more training and tools to support students in making career-related decisions
Creating stronger links between schools and employers, to bridge the gap between education and real-world opportunities
Improving access to structured, easy-to-navigate digital resources, supported by personalised conversations and mentorship
A wake-up call for education systems
Teenagers today are more ambitious than ever, but without the right tools, those ambitions can remain out of reach. The OECD's
State of Global Teenage Career Preparation
report highlights that while educational systems are expanding, they are not necessarily equipping students with the insight and exposure they need to plan their futures effectively.
As countries around the world grapple with economic uncertainty, rising youth unemployment, and shifting job markets, helping teenagers make informed career decisions is more than just a policy issue—it is a social and economic imperative.

Sridhar Vembu, co-founder of Zoho, has been calling for Indians to work in native languages, claiming India's talent, including in tech, is held back by linguistic barriers. '95 per cent of Indians are not fluent in English,' he states. The case for linguistic confidence has merit, but Vembu's myopic argument stems from nationalistic sentiment rather than the path to opportunity. An innovator is gate-keeping AI's capacity to immediately and affordably overcome all language challenges. When leaders with the means to effect on-ground change tell students they don't need to learn English or gain foreign degrees, they omit to mention that both are what got them a seat at the negotiating table of the $4.9 trillion global tech industry. It is not that our students have an inherent inability to learn, but that our techno-educational pipeline cannot teach them. They have not been provided with credible, available, and meritorious learning opportunities. In the 2009 Programme for International Student Assessment (which tests & ranks global education systems), India ranked 72nd out of 73. By boycotting subsequent assessments, we abdicated accountability that undermines showy calls for AI-driven reform. Claiming students don't need the positioning resurrects feudal structures that keep the oppressed reliant on those who do have the currency and negotiability of a global lingua franca. India faces a staggering teacher shortage of approximately 1.5 million educators, leading to overcrowded classrooms; 1.2 lakh schools operate with a single teacher, 89 per cent located in rural areas. Tech leaders citing China's linguistic nationalism forget it has a single script with idiomatic dialect variations. Government-funded scholarships enable their students to conduct research overseas and repatriate their learnings. India has 780 languages and 68 scripts. China has over $1 billion invested in AI education, with 99 per cent of Chinese university faculty and students now using AI tools, 60 per cent frequently. Through the USA's robust public library system, internet access, laptops, sometimes even MacBooks, are made accessible. Instead of enabling such innovations, our techbros are caught in nationalistic debates rich with excuses. Today, what matters more than anything is how we leverage AI immediately. India's Sarvam AI models process code-mixed content in 10 languages with 97 per cent accuracy, including the open-source Shuka v1 audio model. Its content can reflect real-world Indian language usage, handle complex educational terminology, and run efficiently on edge devices, including smartphones. Sarvam is already tasked with building India's sovereign foundational model under the IndiaAI Mission. Organisations like Rocket Learning are already using AI in childhood education, with 75 per cent of children becoming school-ready, while the AICTE's 'Anuvadini' tool supports 22 regional languages. Such progress removes needless linguistic divisiveness. Integrating multiple emergent open-access agentic technologies can transform our education systems overnight with political will and industry focus. There is no longer any excuse for not implementing widespread education reform. From public information messaging to highly specialised technical education, it is possible to customise lessons, automate recursive testing, standardise grading and disseminate it widely. All any village in India needs is electricity, wifi and a smartphone. Regionality is a cocoon of caste and class divisions. AI disrupts this. Real-time translation capabilities offer learners multilingual capacity, and the artificial scarcity of access disappears. Just as English historically offered a neutral modality, thousands of Indians took to the binary coding language precisely because it enabled them to adopt a vocabulary that was mathematically impersonal and logically freeing. Such neutrality is what enables unprecedented social mobility. India needs hypermobility, not hyperregionality. We need to eliminate the false choice between cultural authenticity and educational advancement. AI-powered Intelligent Interactive Teaching Systems (IITS) can personalise learning, generate educational content, and eliminate knowledge gaps dynamically. UNICEF India's research confirms that AI-powered tools can adapt to each child's pace regardless of linguistic background. Unlike human teachers, AI systems can also work 24/7 and reach remote villages with a consistent quality for India's 1.5 million schools. While 60 per cent of school children in India cannot access online learning, mobile penetration is fast-paced: 58 per cent of higher-class students have smartphone access. This creates the opportunity for leapfrogging traditional educational infrastructure. The National Education Policy 2020 explicitly calls for AI integration at all educational levels. What we lack is the urgency to deploy at scale, and what we are getting are excuses galore. India can chuck the outdated Government-school model and switch to a digital library model. Equipped with internet and wifi, students of all ages can teach themselves with pre-loaded modules. An 80-year-old housewife, a 40-year-old farmer or a 20-year-old mechanic can go back to 'school' at any time of day and grab opportunities they never had. AI can provide feedback in real-time, freeing limited human teachers to mentor. India's youth don't need to be told what they don't need to learn or be advised to stay in their villages by those who had the choices to learn, leave, grow, and return. The power brokers who gained influence through access to knowledge don't get to construct barriers to prevent others from following suit. Critics cite infrastructure, data privacy, and implementation challenges. These are the problems to solve while deploying, not reasons to delay deployment. The question is no longer whether AI will transform Indian education, but whether we will act swiftly enough to push enough of our populace through on the momentum of this age, before they get left behind. Dear Rahul Gandhi and Donald Trump, India's economy isn't dead

'Those who speak without knowledge are like the blind describing the sun.' — Mahabharata, Shanti Parva In their misplaced zeal for attention, Donald Trump and Rahul Gandhi have found common cause — declaring the Indian economy 'dead'. If only the facts were as loyal to them as their soundbites are to their need for self-aggrandisation. Trump's utterance, given the way he has behaved post his election victory, was expected. But Rahul Gandhi's reflexive concurrence, parroting anti-India narratives for short-term political gains, raises deeper questions. Is he now India's most committed amplifier of foreign mockery? There are two clear ways to answer this 'dead economy' trope: One with data, and another with diplomacy's hard logic. First, let's follow the numbers. Between 2015 and 2025, India has emerged as the fastest-growing major economy, clocking average real GDP growth of 6.5 per cent compared to 4.1 per cent for emerging economies and 1.8 per cent for OECD countries. In contrast to India's 2004-14 boom, powered by global tailwinds and credit splurge (and even then, India grew slower than the world, slower than emerging economies and much slower than China), this decade's growth under the Modi government came despite disruptive reforms like demonetisation and GST and a pandemic. India is set to become the fourth-largest economy in the world, surpassing the UK and Japan. It accounted for a disproportionately large share of global growth, outpacing all G7 economies in both nominal and real terms. Its 105 per cent nominal GDP expansion between 2015 and 2025 dwarfed the US (66 per cent), Germany (44 per cent), and the UK (28 per cent). While Japan and parts of the Eurozone have almost stagnated, India's growth has been three times faster. It has also significantly narrowed the income gap in per capita terms with OECD nations. Notably, India is projected to overtake Germany soon to become the world's third-largest economy. India led global IPO charts in 2024 with 327 offerings, and the National Stock Exchange now ranks among the top 5 globally. Foreign portfolio flows have surged. Indian equity markets have delivered 16 per cent average annual returns, outshining nearly every peer. During the UPA decade, India's growth lagged behind China, Brazil, and Russia. India outgrew all BRICS economies in 2015-25, outpacing even China in percentage growth over the last five years. Even in per capita income growth, India's rise has been steeper, moving from 30 per cent of average of emerging market economies in 2014 to 42 per cent in 2024. Under the Modi government, exports surged from $468 billion to $825 billion. Defence exports rose twelvefold. Digital India created world-beating platforms like UPI, now processing 49 per cent of all real-time digital payments globally. Inflation, which averaged 8.2 per cent in the UPA era, has been brought down to around 4.5 per cent. Forex reserves have more than doubled. Poverty has fallen at a historic pace, with 25 crore people being lifted out of multidimensional poverty, according to the NITI Aayog. The World Bank has reported that extreme poverty dropped from 16.2 per cent to 2.3 per cent. The contrast between the UPA era and the Modi era is stark. From policy paralysis to policy propulsion. From scams to startups. From a lagging BRICS economy to its leader. India under Modi has not only grown faster but in a cleaner and more inclusive way, and is globally more respected. Over 55 crore Jan Dhan accounts, Rs 34 lakh crore Mudra loans and the world's largest vaccination drive are signals of a state that knows how to implement projects. India today doesn't just aim to be included, it wants to lead the table — that alone marks the death of the 'dead economy' narrative. If India's economy were dead, why is the UK calling its FTA with India the most ambitious in its history? Why are EFTA countries committing $100 billion in investments? Why indeed is the USA chasing trade deals? Why is it that now most iPhones sold in the USA are manufactured in India? Why is it that Canada, a country hostile to India for over a decade, could still not do without India in the G7 it hosted? One could even ask President Trump if the Indian economy is indeed dead, then why is he talking about India in every second press conference he does? India's economy is dynamic, data-backed, and destined for leadership. That this needs to be said in 2025 is unfortunate. That Rahul Gandhi finds himself echoing Trump's casual derision is tragicomic. Perhaps Gandhi thinks aligning with every outsider who insults India will somehow reanimate his politics. But India has moved on from dependency to self-belief, from slogans to substance. The only thing lifeless here isn't the Indian economy. It's the political instinct that cheers when India is jeered. As the dust settles on the Bonn climate talks, discussions on the Global Goal on Adaptation (GGA) have gained momentum, but key questions remain unresolved. With the global 2025 climate milestone (setting updated climate targets and a new finance goal) and COP30 in Brazil on the horizon, the spotlight is on enhancing Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and advancing the GGA. Beyond fulfilling climate obligations, these frameworks will help India carve the path to a resilient, economically thriving the fastest-growing major economy, India faces the dual challenge of development and climate change. From erratic monsoons and heatwaves to rainfall events and sea level rise, climate risks are intensifying, threatening lives and livelihoods, as the country works to meet the needs of a growing population and rapidly urbanising regions. The path ahead, therefore, requires climate action and development to be pursued together as a cohesive national strategy..A recent OECD-UNDP report, Investing in Climate for Growth and Development, suggests that bold climate action is a powerful driver of economic transformation. It estimates the global GDP to be 0.2% higher by 2040 and up to 13% higher by 2100 under a high-ambition scenario, incorporating enhanced climate action and accelerated investments aligned with the Paris Agreement's 'well-below 2°C' India, green growth is both an environmental imperative and smart economics. It enhances energy security, supports rural livelihoods, and builds resilience of vulnerable communities. Aligning economic strategy with sustainability is key to accelerating development while navigating resource constraints and climate in renewables, clean mobility, and energy efficiency reduce emissions and boost innovation, jobs, and long-term India is drafting National Adaptation Plans for key sectors, its adaptation response remains nationally underfunded and fragmented, with international support proving slow, inconsistent, and insufficient. The promise of the GGA lies in its ability to support implementation through funding, capacity-building, and technology must continue advocating for a GGA architecture rooted in urgency and equity, moving beyond top-down metrics. The real test lies in who benefits and to what extent: Are vulnerable communities protected? Are climate-resilient practices reaching tribal populations and women farmers? Are urban systems flood-proofed?.India should also push for frameworks such as the New Collective Quantified Goal (a global target to mobilise climate finance for developing countries) and the Baku to Belem Roadmap (guiding global action on the Paris Agreement's Adaptation Goal) to serve not as checklists but as frameworks guiding countries to translate global ambition into local India prepares its 2025 NDC update, it has a strategic opportunity to set bold decarbonisation targets aligned with its low-carbon development goals and net-zero vision. Ambitious, implementable, and investable enhanced NDCs can become powerful instruments to drive inclusive requires integrating climate goals into sectoral and sub-national policies. Since key levers of adaptation and mitigation, including transport, agriculture, water, and land management, are a state's prerogative, states can become co-architects of national climate the is central to India's net-zero journey, with over $10 trillion needed by 2070. While global adaptation finance remains limited, India must champion predictable, accessible, and need-based funding; scale up domestic instruments like Sovereign Green Bonds and Infrastructure Investment Trusts; enhance state-level climate budgeting; and de-risk private India shifts to a low-carbon economy, labour transitions will be key. Sectors like coal, construction, and transport, often employing informal workers, will need targeted support. With the right planning, green transitions can create quality jobs. India's renewable sector, for example, employed over 1.02 million people in 2023. Ensuring a just transition means investing in reskilling, social protection, and community-led development. Equally important is investing in Nature-based Solutions (NbS), which can support both climate resilience and green jobs. Global estimates indicate a requirement of over $484 billion/year by 2030 for NbS, yet current finance flows fall short, highlighting a critical investment blend of scale, credibility, and developmental urgency positions it to lead efforts for an inclusive global climate framework. An inclusive, investment-ready NDC in 2025 can help India set global standards in emission reduction and climate the GGA negotiations, India must continue to frame adaptation as a survival imperative, not a donor-driven priority.
