
India doesn't need more linguistic nationalism — it needs scalable AI-powered classrooms
When leaders with the means to effect on-ground change tell students they don't need to learn English or gain foreign degrees, they omit to mention that both are what got them a seat at the negotiating table of the $4.9 trillion global tech industry. It is not that our students have an inherent inability to learn, but that our techno-educational pipeline cannot teach them. They have not been provided with credible, available, and meritorious learning opportunities.
In the 2009 Programme for International Student Assessment (which tests & ranks global education systems), India ranked 72nd out of 73. By boycotting subsequent assessments, we abdicated accountability that undermines showy calls for AI-driven reform. Claiming students don't need the positioning resurrects feudal structures that keep the oppressed reliant on those who do have the currency and negotiability of a global lingua franca.
India faces a staggering teacher shortage of approximately 1.5 million educators, leading to overcrowded classrooms; 1.2 lakh schools operate with a single teacher, 89 per cent located in rural areas. Tech leaders citing China's linguistic nationalism forget it has a single script with idiomatic dialect variations. Government-funded scholarships enable their students to conduct research overseas and repatriate their learnings. India has 780 languages and 68 scripts. China has over $1 billion invested in AI education, with 99 per cent of Chinese university faculty and students now using AI tools, 60 per cent frequently. Through the USA's robust public library system, internet access, laptops, sometimes even MacBooks, are made accessible. Instead of enabling such innovations, our techbros are caught in nationalistic debates rich with excuses.
Today, what matters more than anything is how we leverage AI immediately. India's Sarvam AI models process code-mixed content in 10 languages with 97 per cent accuracy, including the open-source Shuka v1 audio model. Its content can reflect real-world Indian language usage, handle complex educational terminology, and run efficiently on edge devices, including smartphones. Sarvam is already tasked with building India's sovereign foundational model under the IndiaAI Mission. Organisations like Rocket Learning are already using AI in childhood education, with 75 per cent of children becoming school-ready, while the AICTE's 'Anuvadini' tool supports 22 regional languages.
Such progress removes needless linguistic divisiveness. Integrating multiple emergent open-access agentic technologies can transform our education systems overnight with political will and industry focus. There is no longer any excuse for not implementing widespread education reform. From public information messaging to highly specialised technical education, it is possible to customise lessons, automate recursive testing, standardise grading and disseminate it widely. All any village in India needs is electricity, wifi and a smartphone.
Regionality is a cocoon of caste and class divisions. AI disrupts this. Real-time translation capabilities offer learners multilingual capacity, and the artificial scarcity of access disappears. Just as English historically offered a neutral modality, thousands of Indians took to the binary coding language precisely because it enabled them to adopt a vocabulary that was mathematically impersonal and logically freeing. Such neutrality is what enables unprecedented social mobility. India needs hypermobility, not hyperregionality. We need to eliminate the false choice between cultural authenticity and educational advancement. AI-powered Intelligent Interactive Teaching Systems (IITS) can personalise learning, generate educational content, and eliminate knowledge gaps dynamically.
UNICEF India's research confirms that AI-powered tools can adapt to each child's pace regardless of linguistic background. Unlike human teachers, AI systems can also work 24/7 and reach remote villages with a consistent quality for India's 1.5 million schools. While 60 per cent of school children in India cannot access online learning, mobile penetration is fast-paced: 58 per cent of higher-class students have smartphone access. This creates the opportunity for leapfrogging traditional educational infrastructure.
The National Education Policy 2020 explicitly calls for AI integration at all educational levels. What we lack is the urgency to deploy at scale, and what we are getting are excuses galore.
India can chuck the outdated Government-school model and switch to a digital library model. Equipped with internet and wifi, students of all ages can teach themselves with pre-loaded modules. An 80-year-old housewife, a 40-year-old farmer or a 20-year-old mechanic can go back to 'school' at any time of day and grab opportunities they never had. AI can provide feedback in real-time, freeing limited human teachers to mentor.
India's youth don't need to be told what they don't need to learn or be advised to stay in their villages by those who had the choices to learn, leave, grow, and return. The power brokers who gained influence through access to knowledge don't get to construct barriers to prevent others from following suit.
Critics cite infrastructure, data privacy, and implementation challenges. These are the problems to solve while deploying, not reasons to delay deployment. The question is no longer whether AI will transform Indian education, but whether we will act swiftly enough to push enough of our populace through on the momentum of this age, before they get left behind.

New Delhi: The reciprocal tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump are a "slow burn" for Wall Street, as they rarely trigger an immediate crisis - but over time, they warp markets, squeeze consumers, and invite retaliation, according to a new report. Investors and policymakers alike would do well to remember that just because the storm isn't here yet doesn't mean it isn't coming, says Zoya Najeeb in an opinion piece in One World Outlook. "While Wall Street pours champagne over record-high stock indexes, the US economy is quietly swallowing a bitter pill: tariffs. The same markets that panicked in April are now shrugging at the reality of a new trade regime - one that could be far costlier than investors seem willing to admit," the article highlighted. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt recently cheered $29 billion in tariff revenue collected in July, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick predicting $50 billion a month soon. "But tariffs are taxes by another name, and this is a tax hike on Americans at a time when the bottom half of the income ladder is already straining," according to the write-up. Caterpillar Inc., an American construction, mining and other engineering equipment manufacturer, estimates the new tariffs will cost it up to $1.5 billion this year - half a billion in the current quarter alone. "Yet its stock barely flinched, thanks to investor faith in unrelated booms in AI data centres and infrastructure spending. It's a neat metaphor for today's K-shaped economy: Wall Street soars while Main Street watches grocery bills spike and more households turn to 'buy now, pay later' plans just to make ends meet," the report highlighted. The AI gold rush may be propping up the stock indexes, but strip out tech and the S&P 500 is flat. "Even Warren Buffett - hardly a doomsayer - has been quietly selling for 11 straight quarters, amassing a $344 billion war chest to deploy when prices fall. He's betting on a downturn, even if the rest of the market isn't," said the report. In the meantime, former US House Speaker Paul Ryan has warned that "choppy waters are ahead because I think they're (tariffs) going to have some legal challenges."

TCS layoffs mark end of one IT era, and the start of another
'The future is already here; it's just not evenly distributed,' goes the famous quote. Well, neither are job losses — or so the 12,000 laid-off employees of TCS might be ruefully thinking as they packed their personal effects, while simultaneously reading about the $100m salaries that Mark Zuckerberg was dangling to lure AI researchers to his company. There has been a spate of layoffs in tech companies, with Microsoft firing 15,000 employees, Intel 5,000, and Meta and Amazon joining the party. Much of the losses were ascribed to AI, which is driving workforce efficiencies and empowering one human to do the job of many. Till now, most of the layoffs were happening in far-off places like the US and Europe, but the TCS announcement that it was letting go 2% of the workforce brought this phenomenon closer home. Companies like TCS have traditionally been seen as a safe harbour, the closest to a 'govt job' in terms of stability and tenure. It had remained so through the dotcom bust, the financial crisis and others. But now, with the advent of AI, the myth seems to be busted. While TCS is the most prominent example, it is not alone. Big consulting firms are 'streamlining' their workforce, other big IT services firms are making disturbing noises, and job portals are teeming with tech workers' resumes. TCS has gone to great lengths to not pin the blame on AI. But the subtext of terms like 'a skill mismatch' and 'future-ready' is hard to ignore. In many ways, this has been a long time coming. The IT services model of cost-arbitrage, deploying vast armies of coders and consultants at lower cost, has been in its twilight era for a while. AI just accelerated the trend, disrupting the existing linear model where more projects meant hiring more people. Now, a human analyst and a few AI agents working together can potentially do what ten analysts once did. In its place, a new kind of IT services firm is emerging — leaner, AI-native, and outcome-focused. These firms will not hire a thousand freshers to handle client reports or debug software, but deploy a small team of AI-literate experts and a suite of autonomous agents to do the job faster, cheaper, and often better. We are seeing early glimpses already, with new services startups using agents like Cursor or Devin, legal firms operating with Harvey, and research teams powered by Perplexity and NotebookLM. The societal impact of this transition in India will be immense. The whole education model of training young people in STEM skills to then place them in some IT company ensuring a stable career with a decent salary is under threat. However, this tectonic shift presents as great an opportunity as the magnitude of the threat. This is especially true for younger, entry-level employees, since 'breaking first is the bottom rung of the career ladder' as Aneesh Raman, the chief economic opportunity officer at LinkedIn, wrote. However, with every crisis, including this one, comes great opportunity. These are five things I believe young people should do in this inevitable age of AI: Leapfrog with AI: The definition of literacy now includes the ability to work fluently and naturally with AI tools and agents. If you know how to, you can take AI's help to do jobs the seniors traditionally did and jump straight to the second or third rung of the job ladder. In a recent post, for example, a tech founder offered a programmer with 2-5 years of experience a Rs 1 crore salary — qualifications and experience were not important, just the use of AI to code. Study humanities with STEM: Prompting is about knowledge, creativity, critical thinking, literature and grammar — core humanities skills. As answers become a commodity with AI, questions or 'prompts' will become the differentiator. Don't just join a company, build one: There has been no better time to create a company with AI tools, agents, and 'vibe coding' available to everyone. It is the age of one-person unicorns — one human and a thousand AI agents building billion-dollar startups. Build a career portfolio: Don't do just one thing. Be a product designer who also writes; a digital marketer who teaches music; a coder who also runs a pet shop. With AI, one company, many employees will give way to one employee with many companies. Build your personal brand: Do not depend on where you work for your identity; leverage AI to build your own through the talents you have or learn. You will never be out of paying work. As Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella put it: 'AI is not here to replace humans. It is here to remove the barriers that prevent humans from doing their best work.'
