Medals for Milan-Cortina Olympics represent ‘two halves coming together'
Organizers for the next Olympics and Paralympics unveiled the medals for the games at a ceremony alongside the Grand Canal in Venice on Tuesday.
They are described as 'a graphic abstraction capturing the union of two halves in perpetual motion' and 'two unique halves coming together to create a bold, unified statement.'
They feature the Olympic rings on one side and the games' logos on the other with specific events engraved on each medal.
The Olympics are scheduled for Feb. 6-22, followed by the Paralympics March 6-15. A total of 1,146 medals will be awarded across 195 events between the two.
The games will be spread across a wide swath of northern Italy, with ice sports in Milan and snow sports in several different mountain clusters. Venice is the capital of the Veneto region that includes Cortina d'Ampezzo, which will host women's Alpine skiing, sliding and curling.
The medals are being produced by Italy's state mint, the Zecca dello Stato.
'I can assure you they won't deteriorate,' Milan-Cortina organizing committee president Giovanni Malagò said. 'They could even be recycled, although I hope nobody will do that.'

Australia's injury woes continue as Pollard steps in for Porecki in third test against Lions
SYDNEY (AP) — Another injury has forced late changes to Australia's lineup for the third rugby test against the British and Irish Lions, with Billy Pollard promoted to start at hooker after David Porecki and Matt Faessler were ruled out of Saturday's match. Porecki was ruled out Friday with a leg injury, making way for Pollard to move into the starting XV off the bench for his 10th test. Mariners reliever Trent Thornton carted off field after injury coming off mound in 9th inning
SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle reliever Trent Thornton was injured while coming off the mound on a ground ball in the ninth inning Thursday night and was carted off the field during the Mariners' 6-0 win over the Texas Rangers. Thornton was using crutches to get around the Mariners' locker room after the game and the team did not have an official diagnosis of the lower left leg injury he sustained on the grounder hit by Adolis Garcia with two outs. Thornton said he feared it was a significant Achilles injury and that he would have an MRI on Friday. 'It's probably the Achilles, but that's just speculation, so I'll find out tomorrow,' Thornton said. 'Very frustrating.' Thornton entered the game to start the eighth inning and retired the first five batters he faced. The right-hander then had a full count on Garcia before the righty hitter hit a grounder on his 95 mph fastball on the lower outside corner. 'I threw the pitch, and as soon as I turned, I thought I broke the guy's bat and it hit me in the back of the leg, and I fell,' Thornton said. Thornton said his first reaction at that point was to try to look at his leg to see what had happened. 'I tried to get up and just couldn't even put pressure on it at all,' Thornton said. 'It didn't hurt. It's just achy and numb. But I guess I don't know. I'm still trying to process this a little bit, and I'll find out more tomorrow.' Knicks newest signing seemingly throws jab at Nuggets' Nikola Jokic
Guerschon Yabusele has solidified himself in the NBA. After playing with the Boston Celtics from 2017 to 2019, Yabusele spent some time overseas, but made a name for himself during the Olympics a year ago. Unfortunately, he only had a one-year deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, and they decided to let him walk. From their perspective, that certainly wasn't ideal, but it was great news for the New York Knicks, who got him at a steal of a price. Yabusele said he had many other options in free agency, including joining the Denver Nuggets and playing with three-time most valuable player Nikola Jokic. Jokic, arguably the best player in the game, would've allowed Yabusele to get open shots and feed off that. However, when speaking about his decision to join the Knicks, he added that Jalen Brunson and Karl-Anthony Towns can do similar things. 'But then you also look at New York with someone like [Jalen] Brunson, who draws defenders and is also a great passer. And someone like Karl-Anthony Towns, who's super impactful in the game,' he continued. MORE: 'So you start seeing similar strengths in both teams. We took some time to think it through and make sure we were making the right decision. But in the end, we truly believe New York is the best choice we could've made.' It's impossible to compare Jokic and Brunson, and even Towns, in that regard. However, to suggest that either one of them is at the level of Jokic would be unfair, as he's done everything in this league and more. Despite that, Yabusele will now have an opportunity to play in New York and look to win a championship for the Knicks.
