Pyramids and Sundowns collide in do-or-die Champs League final

The sides played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Pretoria.
Pyramids FC and Mamelodi Sundowns will meet in what is expected to be a thrilling second leg of the CAF Champions League final in Cairo tonight.
Both teams have all to play for after they played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg in Pretoria. Lucas Ribeiro's opener for Sundowns was canceled out by a late Walid El Karti header for Pyramids.

A goalless draw or any win at home would be enough to hand Pyramids their first-ever CAF Champions League title. However, a high scoring draw will see Sundowns being crowned the champions of Africa for the second time following their triumph under Pitso Mosimane in 2016.
Speaking ahead of tonight's clash at the Air Defense Stadium, Pyramids coach Jurcic urged Egyptian football as a whole to rally behind his team, saying they are not representing themselves but the country of Egypt.
'We will play our usual way, and we call on the Egyptian fans to support us for the sake of football in the country, not just for Pyramids,' Jurcic told the media.
Commenting on the game, Jurcic said as much as they respect Sundowns, they will do everything in their power to win the final.
'It's a decisive and difficult match.
'We'll play our usual way, but we are ready for all scenarios. This is the CAF Champions League final — anything can happen.
'We've built character over this campaign. We respect Sundowns, but we are here to win.'
Pyramids carry an away goal advantage going into this match, and they are expected to apply the low block and try to catch Sundowns on the counter attack.
Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso, however, is not only worried about this, but also Pyramids' organised attack.
'It's not only worrying about the counter-attacks from Pyramids, it's also worrying about their organized attack, about their set-pieces, because they can score like us at any moment,' he explained.

'Usually, in these games, the goals appear in the details, and you saw how the detail in the last seconds of the game gave one goal that was not expected already at that moment. Maybe before it wouldn't be expected, but at that moment, no one expected it,' said Cardoso.

Five names to watch in the Premier League transfer window

LONDON - Premier League clubs are already busy strengthening their squads for the 2025/26 season with an early transfer frenzy sparked by the upcoming Club World Cup. AFP Sports looks at five names to watch as the transfer window kicks into gear. Florian Wirtz (Bayer Leverkusen) Liverpool have shown no sign of resting on their laurels as English champions. After a quiet first year for Arne Slot in the transfer market, the Reds have moved quickly to back the Dutchman heavily this summer. The darling of German football, Wirtz looks set to smash the Premier League transfer record should he get his wish of a dream move to Anfield. Liverpool have reportedly had a bid worth up to £109 million ($147 million) rebuffed as Leverkusen hold out for a £125 million fee. That would break the record set by Chelsea's £115 million capture of Moises Caicedo from under Liverpool's noses two years ago. Wirtz was instrumental in Leverkusen's stunning German league and cup double in the 2023/24 season, plus a run to the Europa League final under Xabi Alonso. The two clubs have already agreed one deal as Jeremie Frimpong has joined Liverpool as a replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold. Bruno Fernandes (Man Utd) AFP | Oli SCARFF Fresh from the club's worst season since they were relegated 51 years ago, losing their inspirational captain would appear to be the worst possible news for United. However, selling Fernandes to Saudi side Al Hilal could provide much-needed funds for Ruben Amorim to rebuild a squad in his image at Old Trafford. The Red Devils could land £100 million for the 30-year-old, who would become one of the world's highest-paid players should be move to the Gulf. "If the club thinks it's time to part ways because they want to do some cashing in or whatever, it is what it is and football sometimes is like this," said Fernandes after United lost the Europa League final to Tottenham last month. Fernandes would leave enormous shoes to fill for a side already lacking in creativity and a goal threat. Despite a miserable campaign collectively, only Liverpool's Mohamed Salah provided more goal contributions last season among Premier League players in all competitions than Fernandes' 19 goals and 19 assists. Bryan Mbeumo (Brentford) Mbeumo is one of United's key targets to end their woes in front of goal. The French-born Cameroon international enjoyed a stellar season with Brentford, scoring 20 times. Mbeumo revelled in becoming the Bees' star man since the departure of Ivan Toney and his partnership with Yoane Wissa carried Thomas Frank's men to an impressive top half finish. Despite interest from Arsenal, Newcastle and Tottenham, Mbeumo's preferred destination is reportedly Old Trafford if United can reach an agreement with Brentford. United have already added Matheus Cunha to bolster a misfiring forward line. A remarkable 54-goal season for Sporting has made the Swede a target for a series of clubs seeking more firepower. Arsenal have been strongly linked with bringing Gyokeres back to England as Mikel Arteta seeks a clinical finisher to end the Gunners' five-year trophy drought. The 26-year-old has a 100 million euro (£84 million) buyout clause in his Sporting contract, but it is expected the Portuguese champions would settle for around 70 million euros. Despite six goals in eight Champions League games, there are doubts over Gyokeres' ability to transfer his prolific form in Portugal to the Premier League. He joined Sporting just two years ago from English second-tier side Coventry after failing to make the grade at Brighton. Arsenal also have a long-standing interest in RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, while Newcastle's Alexander Isak appears an unattainable target after the Magpies qualified for the Champions League. Eberechi Eze (Crystal Palace) AFP | Adrian Dennis Eze will forever be a Palace legend after scoring the winning goal in the FA Cup final victory over Manchester City to deliver the Eagles' first ever major trophy. The England international's eye for goal and a defence-splitting pass has seen him targeted by a plethora of the Premier League's best. City eye the 26-year-old as a potential replacement for Kevin De Bruyne, while Arsenal and Tottenham are also interested and could easily trigger his £68 million release clause.

Mamelodi Sundowns to hijack Kaizer Chiefs target in transfer twist

Mamelodi Sundowns are wasting no time preparing for the 2025/2026 season, with the club setting their sights on Stellenbosch FC's standout defender, Fawaaz Basadien. While they've confirmed they won't dip into the special transfer window, closing on 10 June, for the FIFA Club World Cup, the league champions are already making decisive moves behind the scenes. According to Soccer Laduma , Sundowns have surged ahead of rivals Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the race to secure Basadien's signature. The left-back, recently crowned Stellenbosch's Player of the Season, currently features in the national squad for friendlies against Tanzania and Mozambique. A source suggests he's now 'open to a new challenge, with Gauteng calling his name.' Basadien's experience with Stellenbosch FC and Bafana Bafana makes him a valuable asset for Sundowns. His exposure to continental competition positions him as an ideal reinforcement for coach Miguel Cardoso, who is aiming to lead the club back to CAF dominance. 'Sundowns want Basadien,' confirmed a source. 'He's gained continental experience and fits what they need. Chiefs still think they have a chance, but what I'm hearing is that Fawaaz will join Sundowns.' The pursuit signals Sundowns' intent to strengthen their squad with proven local talent, especially as they aim to build momentum after the Club World Cup. With Basadien potentially arriving at Chloorkop, changes are expected in Sundowns' defensive line-up. Terrence Mashego is reportedly on his way out, despite news about the club triggering a contract extension clause. Stellenbosch FC have shown strong interest in the left-back, intensifying speculation around his future. 'So you saw the reports of Sundowns triggering (Terrence) Mashego's contract,' the source added. 'Also they got Divine Lunga, (Aubrey) Modiba, and the boy from Sekhukhune United (Asekho Tiwani). Now they want Basadien, where will he play?' While some clubs scramble during the short transfer window, Sundowns are operating with quiet efficiency. Their early moves hint at a broader strategy to solidify their dominance in South African football and prepare for another strong continental campaign. Their ability to attract a player of Basadien's calibre, while fending off Soweto giants, underlines their continued pulling power. If the deal is completed post-Club World Cup, it could prove one of the defining transfers of the upcoming season. Should Basadien go to Mamelodi Sundowns with all the competition in his position? Kaizer Chiefs to sign Sundowns striker?

We forgive you for forgetting Etiosa Ighodaro plays for Mamelodi Sundowns. Are Kaizer Chiefs his next club? After three loan spells, the Nigerian is reportedly on his way out of Sundowns' books. Igodaro spent last season on loan at AmaZulu, where he scored six goals in 27 games. The season before, he was at Chippa United after his loan spell at the University of Pretoria. According to this latest report, Kaizer Chiefs are keen on the 23-year-old, whose deal with Sundowns ends on the 30th. Last season's report said Amakhosi are keen to sign the Nigerian centre forward before Sundowns opted to send him to AmaZulu instead. With the likes of Arthur Sales and Lebogang Mothiba arriving at Sundowns last season, indications say the champions are ready to part ways with Igodaro. 'Yes, it's true. Kaizer Chiefs are believed to have enquired about Mamelodi Sundowns striker Etiosa Ighodaro. You know the thing is the same people who scouted him from Nigeria for Sundowns are the same who have enquired about him for Kaizer Chiefs,' a source told Soccer Laduma. Actually it's not the first time they have enquired about him. They tried before when he was on loan at Chippa United but Sundowns sent him on loan at SuperSport United. But now they are apparently looking at the possibility of Sundowns letting him go and they can pounce on him,' the source added. 'At the moment the club and the recruitment department have identified some strikers from where they believe they can get at least two or one that they really need,' the source continued. 'A striker and left back are the priority signings when compared to midfielders and wingers. Kaizer Chiefs are busy in the background working on getting a striker, and Ighodaro has apparently emerged as another target. That's the focus, it is to get a striker as early as they can before the pre-season training camp,' the insider told the outlet.
