TSA unveils new system that will cut down security wait times at airports... but only for certain passengers

Daily Mail5 days ago
Traveling with young kids just got a little easier for parents at select airports.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has launched a new program called Families on the Fly at Orlando International Airport and Charlotte-Douglas International Airport.
It offers dedicated security lanes for families with children aged 12 and under, per Fox News Orlando.
The goal? To reduce stress for parents traveling with little ones and ease congestion for everyone else.
'We understand that air travel can be challenging, especially for parents managing strollers, diaper bags, and young kids,' said TSA Federal Security Director for Orlando Pete Garcia, per the outlet.
'This program goes beyond convenience; it's about addressing the unique needs of traveling families to provide a smoother, more supportive experience at our security checkpoints.'
The family-friendly initiative is part of a broader effort by the TSA to improve hospitality and streamline the airport experience amid growing travel demand.
The program is already up and running in Orlando and Charlotte, with more airports set to join in the coming months, including Charleston, Jacksonville, and Rhode Island's T.F. Green.

Others include San Juan, Tampa, John Wayne Orange County, and Honolulu.
Many traveling parents are ecstatic about the new lanes.
'It's extremely stressful. There's a lot of stuff, like all the iPads and all the teddies and all that kind of stuff,' said Adam Luper, who is currently visiting the UK from the United Kingdom.
Another parent, Fanta Kaba, who was traveling from New York to Orlando, explained: 'It's very exhausting. Especially when [the child] is crying.
'You have to pick him up. You have to drag the bag. So when the line is shorter, it makes it easier for the parents.
'When the line is shorter, it makes it easier for the parents.'
Michael Silata, the TSA's assistant federal security director in Orlando, added: 'This dedicated lane helps to ease the traveling public when they come through. And that same time, really add value when they travel through the airports.'
While the new lanes are now available, it's still unclear when families will be able to access discounted TSA PreCheck fees or whether the program will expand nationwide.
Officials haven't said how long the pilot phase will last or if feedback will be used to guide future rollouts, but the TSA confirmed that Families on the Fly is expected to reach even more airports soon.
The TSA recently announced another lane-related update to select airports across the country.
The administration shared earlier this month that it would be adding a new expedited lane and discounts 'to enhance the travel experience for members of the U.S. military community,' per PR Newswire.
Gold Star families - those who have lost a loved one in military service - will also now have TSA PreCheck fees waived.
Additionally, TSA will now offer a $25 discount on TSA PreCheck enrollment for spouses of military and uniformed service members.
The new lanes will be implemented at 10 American airports in cities including: San Antonio, Texas, Anchorage, Alaska, Atlanta, Georgia, Austin, Texas, Colorado Springs, Colorado, El Paso, Texas, Fayetteville, North Carolina, Nashville, Tennessee, San Diego, California, and Seattle, Washington.

Lyft misses quarterly revenue estimates on competition, weak US travel demand

Aug 6 (Reuters) - Lyft (LYFT.O), opens new tab missed second-quarter revenue estimates on Wednesday, pressured by mounting competition from Uber and softening U.S. travel demand, sending its shares down 7% in after-hours trading. Larger rival Uber Technologies (UBER.N), opens new tab, which offers ride-hailing, food and grocery delivery business globally, beat revenue estimates and issued an upbeat forecast for the third-quarter earlier in the day. Demand for travel to the U.S. has fallen this year, and analysts expect the slump to continue through 2025 as economic uncertainty, trade tensions and visa backlogs make the country less appealing to international visitors. Lyft, which is expanding beyond its North America, posted revenue of $1.59 billion in the second quarter, missing estimates of $1.61 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Rides on its platform grew 14% to a record high of 234.8 million, slightly below estimates of 235.9 million, according to 27 analysts polled by Visible Alpha. Lyft recently completed its nearly $200 million acquisition of European mobility platform FreeNow and has signed a deal with China's Baidu ( opens new tab to introduce the search engine giant's robotaxis in the region. Meanwhile, Uber, which has 20 global partnerships for self-driving technology, said it was in talks with private equity firms and banks to finance the deployment of robotaxis. Lyft on Wednesday also announced a partnership, set to launch later this year, with United Airlines (UAL.O), opens new tab that will allow the carrier's customers to earn rewards on all Lyft rides. With partnerships including DoorDash (DASH.O), opens new tab and Chase already in place, Lyft's entry into Europe positions the company to extend such collaborations into international markets. Lyft said it expects gross bookings to be between $4.65 billion and $4.80 billion for the third quarter, well above estimates of $4.59 billion. The company also reported earnings of 10 cents per share for the June quarter, more than double analysts' expectations of 4 cents. With growth stagnating in major U.S. metros, ride-hailing companies are shifting their focus to medium and smaller car-dependent cities to tap into new markets and drive revenue. Lyft recorded an adjusted core earnings of $129.4 million in the second quarter, above the average estimate of $124.5 million. It forecast current-quarter core earnings of $125 million to $145 million, largely in line with Wall Street estimates.

Airbnb forecasts Q3 revenue above estimates; plans $6 billion share buyback

Aug 6 (Reuters) - Airbnb (ABNB.O), opens new tab forecast third-quarter revenue above Wall Street estimates on Wednesday and announced a new share repurchase program worth $6 billion, sending the vacation rentals company's shares up 3.4% after the bell. Growth of nights booked in the U.S. accelerated each month throughout the quarter ended June, driven by a rise in domestic travel, San Francisco-based Airbnb said, adding that it was encouraged by the trend for the current quarter. Several travel firms, like United Airlines (UAL.O), opens new tab and Wyndham Hotels (WH.N), opens new tab, saw a recovery in U.S. travel demand after a slowdown in April, when consumers initially pulled back spending due to President Donald Trump's shifting trade policy. Airbnb's average daily rates, or the average cost per night, in North America rose 3% in the quarter, driven by strong demand for higher-priced listings. This trend is consistent with other travel companies, including hotel operator Marriott (MAR.O), opens new tab, where bookings for upscale properties and premium offerings helped offset weak demand in the budget segment. Excluding the impact of foreign exchange, ADR in the second quarter increased 1% and was up across all regions, largely due to price appreciation, the company said. Nights and seats booked, an updated metric which includes the number of services booked on Airbnb's platform rose 7% in the second quarter, while gross booking value increased 11% to $23.5 billion. "We had a strong Q2, exceeding expectations across our key metrics," CEO Brian Chesky said in a statement. The company reported quarterly revenue of $3.10 billion, compared with analysts' estimates of $3.04 billion, according to data compiled by LSEG. Airbnb expects third quarter revenue between $4.02 billion to $4.10 billion, the midpoint of which was higher than analysts' average estimate of $4.05 billion. However, the company cautioned that despite stronger night bookings in North America, growth could moderate given tougher year-over-year comparisons in the third and fourth quarters. It expects the implied take rate, or the ratio of revenue to gross bookings, to remain flat in the third quarter. The travel company posted a per-share profit of $1.03, compared with Wall Street estimates of 93 cents.

Justin Thomas 'rested and refreshed' for start of playoffs

August 6 - Justin Thomas thinks he has had a nice season. He knows how to erase all doubts. "I definitely know three ways I could make it a lot happier and feel a lot better about it," he said Wednesday in Memphis as he prepares for the first of three FedEx Cup Playoff events this week. Thomas arrived at TPC Southwind for the FedEx St. Jude Championship ranked No. 6 in the FedEx Cup standings and No. 4 in the world rankings. "I'm definitely not going to make any judgments or assess anything for the time being with three big events left and three tournaments I feel like I could have a good chance to go out and try to win and put myself in contention," he said. "That's the goal, just to try to do that each week. I'm teeing it up these next three, and hopefully we can try to get a couple of them and ultimately the FedEx Cup. "It's hard to say right now but ask me again in three weeks hopefully." Thomas, 32, won his 16th career PGA Tour title at the RBC Heritage in April and also has runner-up finishes this year at The American Express in January, the Valspar Championship in March and the Truist Championship in May. He has not played since finishing T34 at The Open Championship in Royal Portrush, Northern Ireland, a nice bounce back after missing the cuts at the PGA Championship and U.S. Open. "It was just nice to honestly take some time away, just relax a little bit, not do much and get back into it," Thomas said of the past couple of weeks. "I think at least for me, the time off is nice to where I'm excited to go out to the course and practice and feel like I'm getting ready for something again because if not it can become a little -- some days wake up and maybe not quite as motivated or excited as others. "Honestly, just happy to be here and rested and refreshed." Thomas finished T30 in Memphis last year, 12 shots behind winner Hideki Matsuyama of Japan. After playing the back nine on Wednesday morning, Thomas said he was impressed with the recent changes and updates made to the course. "The course looks awesome," he said. "Obviously having been closed with the changes and no play, it's in unbelievable shape. The fairways are so perfect. The greens are brand new. They're firm but they're some of the best surfaces that we'll ever putt on." Thomas said he wants to finish strong and earn his place on captain Keegan Bradley's U.S. Ryder Cup team for September showdown at New York's Bethpage Black. "I want to be in that top six," he said. "Just for me personally, it just would mean a lot to me to get that done because having been picked or having to rely on a pick a couple times, I definitely like the level of low stress and just the sense of calm knowing that you're qualified versus waiting for that phone to ring." --Field Level Media
