Powys fire cadets recognised at Newtown pass out parade
Powys' latest group of fire cadets have enjoyed a pass out parade at Newtown Fire Station. On Monday, July 14, a pass out parade was held at Newtown to celebrate the achievements of the latest group of Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) Fire Cadets. Over the last two-years the youngsters have learned a wide range of valuable skills and techniques through fire station ground training and education in the classroom. The Cadets have gained a Fire Cadets qualification and were presented with an achievement certificate from Deputy Chief Fire Officer Iwan Cray. The Newtown Cadets were also joined by the Mayor of Newtown, Peter Lewington and members of MAWWFRS Fire Authority Councillor Gwyn Evans and Councillor Elwyn Vaughan. Fire Cadets co-ordinator Karen Mayze said: 'Family members, local dignitaries, and community members gathered to witness the Newtown Cadets Pass Out Parade, which showcased the cadets' achievements in areas such as discipline, teamwork, leadership, and practical drills. 'The programme, aimed at building confidence and preparing young people for future opportunities, was praised for its positive impact on participants and the wider community. "It's inspiring to see how much these cadets have grown over their time with us. They've worked incredibly hard and today is a proud moment for them and their families.' Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) is now recruiting Fire Cadets at Fire Stations across the Service area.

An Independent Cultural Review into Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service (MAWWFRS) in February found 'a large majority of staff and former staff described MAWWFRS as an 'operational boys club,' where personal connections with senior leaders fostered favouritism and nepotism' and that 'high levels of bullying and harassment, a fear of retaliation and ostracisation hampering confidence in reporting, and a lack of confidence in action from senior leaders, reflect a bullying culture at MAWWFRS.'

New images reveal scale of fire damage to Welsh beauty spot hotel Police are investigating the cause of the fire Drone pictures show the devastating damage caused to the Worms Head Hotel (Image: DTDS ) Drone pictures have captured the scale of the devastating damage caused to the Worm's Head Hotel. A huge blaze took hold at the family-run business, based at Rhossili in Gower in the early hours of the morning. Police have launched an investigation into the cause of the fire, but they have said it is not thought to have been deliberate. Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service attended the incident just before 1am, sending crews from six stations. Firefighters found "significant damage" had been caused to the building. Now these pictures, taken by Drone Tour DS, show the devastating aftermath. A fire service statement read: "At 12.51am on Monday, July 14, the Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service crews from Reynoldston, Swansea West, Port Talbot, Morriston, Swansea Central and Gorseinon Fire Stations were called to the scene of a large-scale at the Worm's Head Hotel in Rhossili. "Crews responded to a fire within the property's accommodation block, which spread to the block's entire roof space. "Crews utilised a turntable ladder appliance as a water tower, a water bowser, two water jets, one hose reel jet and two breathing apparatus sets to fight the fire. The fire was extinguished at around 5.30am." Fire crews attended just before 1am on Monday morning (Image: DTDS ) Article continues below The fire service added: "No casualties were reported and all occupants were accounted for. After extinguishing the fire, crews monitored for remaining hot spots using thermal imaging cameras and continued to dampen down at the scene, with the last crews leaving at 9.32am. "The property has been significantly damaged by the fire. The cause of the fire has not yet been identified. "This incident required a multi-agency response, with South Wales Police also in attendance." The cause of the fire has still not been identified (Image: DTDS ) A statement from South Wales Police read: ""The cause of the fire is currently being investigated but at this time is not thought to have been deliberate." Owner of the pub, Julian Short said he was in the dark as to how the fire started. Article continues below But he told WalesOnline: "The alarms went off after midnight when everything was closed and the fire was clearly in the bin area at the rear."
