Fintech to elevate the banking industry, says Ibrahim Al Mheiri

Khaleej Times20-05-2025
Demand for seamless, convenient and accessible transactions is driving uptake of fintech solutions while AI-driven solutions have also enhanced Islamic investment options, providing hyper-personalised results that comply with Islamic principles, says an industry veteran.
Ibrahim Al Mheiri, Head of Islamic Banking, Mashreq, said Shariah-compliant banking is actually suitable for every customer, including non-Muslim customers.
'We are seeing increased demand for financial solutions that align with customers' ethical principles, and by its very nature, Islamic banking meets that demand,' Al Mheiri told BTR.
In an exclusive interview, Al Mheiri deep dives into how Islamic finance can harness the potential of open banking and embedded finance have made financial transactions seamless, more convenient and accessible.
Excerpts from the interview:
Fintech has changed banking and sets new benchmarks. How did it revolutionise Islamic banking?
As with conventional banking, fintech has had tremendous impact on Islamic banking. Innovations such as open banking and embedded finance have made financial transactions seamless, more convenient and accessible, while digital banking and mobile apps have allowed customers — especially in underserved regions — access Shariah-compliant financial services easily, as well as making transactions faster and more efficient. Technology such as blockchain has enabled greater transparency in Islamic financial contracts, such as Murabaha and Sukuk, increasing compliance. Predictive analytics based on artificial intelligence (AI) and generative AI (GenAI) now help Islamic banks assess creditworthiness in a Shariah-compliant way, avoiding interest-based credit scoring, and sophisticated fraud detection and compliance monitoring tools enhance operational security and regulatory adherence. AI-driven solutions have also enhanced Islamic investment options, providing hyper-personalised solutions that comply with Islamic principles.
How do you see fintech will drive Islamic banking in the coming years? Do you think it will help promote Shariah-compliant products?
The more fintech — and the associated technology and innovation — makes Shariah-compliant banking and financial solutions more accessible and convenient, the more it will drive uptake of Islamic banking. Essentially, we will see parallels between fintech in conventional banking and fintech in Islamic banking; it stands to reason that what will drive trends in one will be replicated in the other. A key area in which fintech will help promote Islamic banking is in ethics and principles; with tech and innovation enabling ever greater transparency and compliance, the involvement of fintech will make it easier for customers to choose financial products and services that match their religious and ethical requirements.
What are the key factors influencing the Islamic banks to adopt fintech and promote its usage in today's day-to-day banking?
As with conventional banking, the technology and innovation with which fintechs are associated are enabling something of a revolution, as are shifts in consumer expectations and developments in operational processes. Demand for seamless, convenient and accessible transactions is driving uptake of fintech solutions such as those made possible by open banking and embedded finance, while automation of everyday processes behind the scenes is enabling banks to enhance the customer experience to keep pace with expectations of always-available service. Financial inclusion, a core tenet of Islamic finance, is also a key factor; by adopting fintech solutions and the associated technology and innovation, we can expand our reach, increase financial inclusion and ensure the unbanked and underbanked can access the financial solutions they need.
Underscoring all of this is the simple fact that Shariah-compliant banking is actually suitable for every customer, including non-Muslim customers. We are seeing increased demand for financial solutions that align with customers' ethical principles, and by its very nature, Islamic banking meets that demand.
Do you see any adverse impact of fintech on Islamic banking?
While developments such as automation — with technology and innovation taking over many of the more mundane, previously human-led processes — can naturally cause concern in the banking industry thanks to changes in human capital deployment, we see such changes as an opportunity. Instead of having their time taken up with routine tasks, our teams can focus on customers, and on providing a vastly enhanced customer experience. Automation also means quicker processes with fewer errors, benefiting everyone, and more time to focus on more complex tasks means customers can have their needs met faster and more intuitively.
How do you expect fintech to lift Islamic banking in the next five years?
We expect fintech to elevate the banking industry, whether conventional or Islamic. Technology and innovation are opening whole new avenues for banks and their customers, with vast enhancements to the customer experience and to operational efficiency. Key areas of evolution will be in driving innovation, enhancing efficiency, expanding reach, and increasing financial inclusion. With the continued acceleration of digital transformation, Islamic finance will become ever more accessible, transparent, and competitive, both in the GCC region and across the globe.

HONOR sets new benchmarks for foldable smartphones

Foldable smartphones are poised for a bright future, fuelled by strong consumer demand, particularly in emerging markets, as competition among major brands intensifies, according to an industry veteran. Laurance Li, Country Manager at HONOR – GCC, proudly highlighted that the HONOR Magic V5 has set new standards in the foldable smartphone category and is expected to dominate the global market, thanks to its appeal among tech-savvy consumers in the Middle East and North Africa. 'The future of smartphones lies in the foldable segment,' Li stated in an exclusive interview with BTR. 'Tech-savvy consumers won't compromise on the size and quality of their devices when it comes to balancing their professional responsibilities and personal entertainment, especially with innovative products like the Magic V5,' he said. Laurance Li expressed confidence in the burgeoning demand for foldable smartphones, noting that HONOR plans to release more variants to meet the rising needs of consumers worldwide this year. According to a report by the International Data Corporation (IDC), the foldable smartphone market is projected to grow significantly, reaching 45.7 million units by 2028, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 20.3% from 2023 to 2028. While the foldable segment is expanding rapidly, it still accounts for a relatively small share of the overall smartphone market. The IDC forecasts a 37.6% increase in foldable phone shipments for 2024, predicting a rise from 18.1 million units in 2023 to 25 million units shipped in 2024. The report also indicates that emerging markets will largely drive this growth as prices decrease and more brands enter the foldable smartphone arena. Why HONOR Magic V5 Enhancing the AI-first experience, Laurance Li said the HONOR Magic V5 introduces a powerful new feature — the Magic Sidebar. 'This smart feature suggests helpful features on the side bar based on what you're doing. With the Magic Sidebar, you don't need to switch between apps to find translation or summary, because everything you need appears right when you need it.' 'We have also reinvented the operating system to enable better collaboration between hardware and software based on understanding of user intents. While traditional OS mainly runs on a device-based kernel, we introduced a human-based kernel to learn about and analyze user habits, personal intents as well as the environment, so the double kernel driven AI OS can understand you better, predicting and providing the services you need,' he added. He said the HONOR Magic V5 integrates several advanced Gemini models to power its AI capabilities. Central to this is Gemini Live, an AI assistant designed for real-time interaction and multitasking. 'The collaboration fully unlocks the HONOR Magic V5's multitasking capability, delivering a next-level Gemini experience. Gemini Live analyses live video feeds to recognize objects, text, and scenes, providing immediate insights without switching apps. It supports screen sharing with the AI assistant, allowing the device to understand and summarize complex content such as legal documents or financial charts, offering context-aware help tailored to user needs.' AI-driven Smart Features Laurance Li said the HONOR Magic V5 offers several smart features powered by on-device AI. AI communication: These include AI Call Translation, powered by HONOR on-device call translation large model. By processing everything locally on the device, it ensures complete privacy, with no audio data sent externally. This real-time translation feature enables smooth phone conversations between users who speak different languages, with only one party needing to use an HONOR device. AI photography: The HONOR AI Super Zoom uses an on-device AI RAW model to improve image clarity and sharpness up to 30x zoom, ensuring clear and detailed photos. For zoom levels beyond 30x, cloud processing is used to further enhance image quality. AI Security: HONOR Deepfake Detection also operates fully on-device to identify AI-generated face manipulations during video calls. This approach safeguards user privacy while providing critical security in an age of increasing AI-driven misinformation. Future Belongs to AI Looking ahead, Laurance Li said AI will become even more deeply embedded in our daily mobile experiences. 'We believe smartphones will evolve from being just tools into intelligent companions that understand your preferences, anticipate your needs, help solve complex problems, and inspire creativity. With AI, interactions will become more natural and human-like, delivering greater efficiency and more meaningful digital experiences,' he said. He said the UAE is home to a tech-savvy population with busy lifestyles that demand the latest innovations in technology, photography, and privacy. HONOR meets these needs by integrating advanced AI technologies into its smartphones, offering features like Magic Sidebar, Gemini Live for multitasking, AI Super Zoom for stunning photography, real-time AI Translation to break language barriers, and AI Deepfake Detection to ensure privacy and security. 'In line with the UAE's rapid digitalisation, HONOR also pre-installs the UAE PASS app on its latest flagship, the HONOR Magic V5. Developed in partnership with the UAE's Digital Government Regulatory Authority, UAE PASS provides secure, seamless access to government and private sector services from the moment users start their device. This integration highlights HONOR's commitment to delivering not just cutting-edge AI but also meaningful, locally relevant digital solutions for UAE consumers,' he said. Outlook for the foldable smartphones Laurance Li sees bright future for foldable smartphones and said HONOR is ready to cater to the growing demand of this segment by offering more variants in future. 'At HONOR, we welcome competition as a catalyst for innovation and growth within the foldable market. The potential addition of new players validates the increasing consumer interest and demand for foldable devices,' he said. He said HONOR has been a pioneer in the foldable space, consistently pushing the boundaries of technology and design with each generation of our foldable smartphones. 'Through relentless innovation and a focus on breakthroughs in both the thinness and weight of foldable devices, HONOR is the industry leader, creating smartphones that are not only as lightweight and comfortable to hold as bar phones, but also deliver a premium user experience,' he said. 'We listen closely to our customers and prioritise features and functionalities that genuinely enhance their mobile experience. This includes continuous improvements over many years in display technology, hinge design, software optimisation, camera performance, and overall device durability,' according to Laurance Li. Ultimately, he said the goal is to enhance the appeal of foldable technology, making it accessible and desirable to a broader audience, thus paving the way for the future of mobile devices. 'We welcome new competitors to join the market and help to push the industry forwards,' he said. Fastest-growing Tech Brand Referring to the latest data, Laurance Li said HONOR is the fastest-growing tech brand in the Middle East and North Africa catering to the needs of tech-savvy consumers in the region. 'While we don't publish market share by country, internal data shows that HONOR is the fastest-growing tech brand in the MENA region, with shipments rising over 83% — a milestone no other smartphone brand here has achieved. In the UAE alone, our sales in the first half of 2025 increased by 75% compared to the same period in 2024. Our HONOR Magic V3 doubled foldable shipments, and our HONOR 400 series grew by 200%, showing that more consumers are choosing HONOR for both foldable and flagship smartphones,' Laurance Li explained. In reply to a question, he said the HONOR Magic V5 addresses the toughest challenges in foldable technology — battery life, durability, and hinge strength. It features the industry's largest silicon-carbon battery in a foldable, delivering a 5,820mAh capacity with 15% high-silicon content. 'Our HONOR Super Steel Hinge withstands 500,000 folds and can support up to 100kgs controlled conditions. The device also achieves IP58 and IP59 ratings for dust and water resistance, while its Carbon Fiber Reinforced Inner Display Panel offers exceptional protection with 15 times better scratch resistance than standard glass,' he said. At the core of this engineering is HONOR's AI Manufacturing process, the industry's most advanced AI-powered production system, which enhances structural precision, durability, and design integrity. This commitment is backed by strong investment in R&D — over 70% of our workforce is dedicated to it, and we reinvest 11.5% of our annual revenue into innovation, according to Laurance Li. 'On the retail side, we believe that both physical experience and ecommerce matters. We are expanding our HONOR Experience Stores so customers can try our latest technology firsthand. Last year we opened two stores in Dubai and one in Abu Dhabi. This month, we are opening another in Abu Dhabi's Reem Mall. This year we have seen three-digit growth in all our ecommerce partner platforms such as noon, amazon and etc,' he said. After-sales Care Feature Laurance Li said HONOR sees huge growth potential in foldable smartphone segment and offering some of the extra features to facilitate Magic V5 buyers in the region. 'For the HONOR Magic V5, we are making after-sales care a top priority, especially for foldable users who may be concerned about screen replacement costs. As part of our launch offer, customers who pre-order or purchase within the first month will receive HONOR Care with 12 months of screen protection. This covers one free replacement for the inner screen and one for the outer screen, with no cost for parts or labour. Purchases made after the first month will still be eligible for six months of screen protection.' 'We also have prepared variety of added value surprises for customers across our select retail partners,' he said. The HONOR Magic V5 is be available in elegant colour options — Dawn Gold, Ivory White, Reddish Brown, and Black — at a price of Dh6,499 with gift package valued at Dh3,396, which includes a free Bose Speaker, HONOR Magic Pen, HONOR Case, and HONOR VIP Care+. India Reduces Russian Oil Imports, Increases US Supply in 2023

India's oil import strategy showed a marked shift in July 2023, as figures indicated a significant dip in Russian oil imports, alongside a notable increase in purchases from the United States. According to the latest data, India's Russian crude oil imports fell by approximately 3.6% in the first seven months of the year, amounting to 1.73 million barrels per day, down from the previous period. This reduction coincided with a rise in imports from the U. S., which surged by 58% over the same period, signalling a reorientation of India's energy sourcing amid shifting global market dynamics. The decline in Russian oil imports was most evident in July, a month in which India notably skipped shipments from Latin America, further complicating the global oil trade landscape. The data underlines India's ongoing balancing act as it navigates its energy needs, political affiliations, and economic pressures in a complex geopolitical environment. Since the onset of the Ukraine conflict in early 2022, India had sharply increased its reliance on Russian oil, taking advantage of discounted prices amidst Western sanctions. Russia had emerged as one of India's largest oil suppliers, providing a significant portion of the country's crude oil requirements at highly competitive rates. However, as global energy markets continue to adapt to the war's long-term ramifications, shifts in India's oil import strategies reflect an evolving approach to international energy procurement. ADVERTISEMENT The surge in U. S. oil imports reflects broader trends in India's engagement with non-Russian sources, particularly the United States. While Russia's crude oil remained competitively priced, U. S. exports presented an alternative as India's energy demands surged. As of July, the volume of oil imports from the U. S. showed an impressive rise, suggesting a diversification strategy that aims to reduce dependence on any one country, particularly as Russia faces increasing global scrutiny and sanctions. This diversification is significant not only in terms of energy security but also geopolitically. With Western countries tightening sanctions against Russia, India's oil purchases from non-Western suppliers, including the U. S., align with its broader strategy of maintaining an independent foreign policy. By tapping into American oil supplies, India positions itself as an increasingly significant player in the global energy markets, potentially leveraging these resources for both economic and strategic gains. Simultaneously, the reduction in Latin American oil imports in July suggests a recalibration in India's sourcing preferences. While Latin America had been a key supplier for India in previous years, particularly from countries like Venezuela and Mexico, geopolitical challenges and shifting global demand patterns appear to have altered these trade flows. This move also underscores the growing influence of U. S. oil in India's energy mix, a shift likely influenced by factors such as pricing, quality, and strategic alliances. The evolving oil trade patterns are not just a reflection of changing global dynamics but also highlight India's domestic policy objectives. As the world's third-largest oil importer, India is continually navigating the pressures of securing affordable energy while balancing its international relations. India's energy needs are projected to grow in the coming decades, making the diversification of oil sources crucial for its future economic stability. Further complicating matters, the global oil market has faced increasing volatility due to fluctuations in supply and demand, driven by the war in Ukraine, OPEC's production decisions, and broader economic uncertainty. The effects of these disruptions are evident in India's changing oil import patterns, which seem to be increasingly shaped by price sensitivity and geopolitical considerations.
