Australia jobs rebound in July, unemployment dips in major relief

By Wayne Cole
SYDNEY (Reuters) -Australian employment rebounded in July as firms took on more full-time workers, data showed on Thursday, pulling the jobless rate down from a 3-1/2 year high and calming concerns the labour market was about to fall over.
The upbeat report implied there was less urgency for the Reserve Bank of Australia to follow up this week's rate cut with another in September, and nudged the local dollar up 0.3% to a two-week high at $0.6566.
Yet policy makers have indicated more easing is likely should inflation continue to cool as expected and markets remain fully priced for a further quarter point easing to 3.35% in November.
"The data are reassuring in that they suggest conditions are not deteriorating quickly," Sean Langcake, Head of Macroeconomic Forecasting for Oxford Economics Australia.
"Nevertheless, weak economic momentum and global uncertainty will be strong headwinds for the labour market to overcome through the rest of the year."
Figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed net employment rose 24,500 in July from June, when it added a meagre 1,000. That was dead in line with market forecasts, while full-time jobs more than recovered a June drop with a jump of 60,500.
In a relief for the economic outlook, the jobless rate eased back to 4.2%, from 4.3%, which had been the highest reading since November 2021. The participation rate ticked down to 67.0%, while hours worked rose 0.3% after a pullback in June.
The ABS noted female full-time jobs jumped by 40,000 in July and their participation rate rose a record high of 63.5%.
The central bank had expected unemployment to rise to around 4.3% this quarter, which is still low by historical standards, and stay there for the foreseeable future.
Leading indicators of labour demand have been solid with vacancies still almost 50% above pre-pandemic levels, while there were 1.8 unemployed per vacancy compared to 3.1 back in early 2020.
Business surveys are generally upbeat and consumer spending has picked up in the last couple of months as lower borrowing costs and past tax cuts feed through to incomes.
RBA Governor Michele Bullock has also flagged the likelihood of at least another 50 basis points of total easing should core inflation continue to moderate from its current 2.7% pace to the mid-point of the central bank's target band of 2% to 3%.
While unemployment is low, there is little sign of wages being an inflationary threat with annual pay growth holding at 3.4% in the second quarter, well below its 2023 peak of 4.2%.

Why hotter-than-expected wholesale prices make the Fed's September rate cut decision harder

A hotter-than-expected wholesale inflation report just made the Federal Reserve's decision regarding a September rate cut even tougher. The report raises questions of whether higher prices for businesses will be passed on to consumers, pushing up inflation. 'The PPI suggests inflation isn't the non-story some people thought it was after Tuesday's CPI print,' said Chris Larkin, managing director of trading and investing for E-Trade from Morgan Stanley. 'This doesn't slam the door on a September rate cut, but based on the market's initial reaction, the opening may be a little smaller than it was a couple of days ago.' Read more: How jobs, inflation, and the Fed are all related Markets are still pricing in over a 90% chance the central bank will cut rates by a quarter percentage point come September. The Producer Price Index showed prices rose in July by a much stronger-than-expected 0.9%, marking the largest monthly increase in more than three years. Year over year, core prices, which exclude volatile food and energy prices, jumped to 3.7% from 2.6% in June. Expectations were for a jump up to 3%. 'If consumer prices don't accelerate from here, we have a profit margin hit on our hands,' said market strategist Peter Boockvar. 'Pick your poison.' But Luke Tilley, chief economist for Wilmington Trust, doesn't think PPI changes the story for higher inflation. 'I think today's PPI fits the narrative we've had all along,' said Tilley. 'Tariffs are driving up business costs, firms are eating some of the costs and passing some along to consumers. I don't see a risk of more general inflation because consumers will continue cutting back on services spending.' The data will be used in conjunction with the Consumer Price Index to estimate what the Fed's preferred inflation gauge — the Personal Consumption Expenditures index (PCE) — will be. Using both data sets, Bank of America economists estimate PCE on a core basis, excluding volatile food and energy prices, rose by 0.3% month over month in July. That would push the year-over-year rate up to 2.9% from 2.8% in June. July's PCE report is due out Aug. 29. 'The Fed's preferred measure of inflation likely moved further away from its 2% target, challenging the market's conviction for a September cut,' said Stephen Juneau, US economist for Bank of America. Thursday's report continues the conundrum for the Fed and Chairman Jerome Powell: Increasingly both sides of their dual mandate are coming into potential conflict, engraining the division of views among members of the Fed. Chicago Fed president Austan Goolsbee cautioned Wednesday that if there are more inflation reports that show prices for services are rising, like the CPI report earlier this week, that would be concerning. "Services are not tied to the tariffs," he said. "Everyone is hoping that's just a blip. There's noise in the data. If you start to get multiple months where the components suggest that the impact of tariff inflation is not staying in its lane, that would be more of a concern.' Stephen Brown, deputy chief North America economist for Capital Economics, said his estimates suggest that the PCE inflation report will reveal prices of goods on a core basis were essentially unchanged in July, while core services will have risen by 0.4%, the strongest pace in five months. Wilmington Trust's Tilley noted that the big jump in PPI reported Thursday was due to services, but comes on the heels of several months of low readings and remains in 'very normal territory.' Atlanta Fed president Raphael Bostic, who has been more concerned about the risk of inflation from tariffs, said Wednesday that a weaker-than-expected July jobs report raises the risk that the job market may be beginning to weaken and that the central bank doesn't have as much time to be patient on inflation. 'To me, that's the question we're going to try to have an answer [to],' said Bostic. 'How much [have] labor markets weakened such that we shouldn't feel like we can afford to be patient, and that's really our task for the next five weeks or so.' On the other side are members like San Francisco Fed president Mary Daly, who is concerned the job market is moving in the wrong direction. Daly told the Wall Street Journal Thursday that the Fed can't ignore the softening in the job market. "Policy is likely to be too restrictive for where the economy is headed. So for me, that calls for recalibration," she said. Jennifer Schonberger is a veteran financial journalist covering markets, the economy, and investing. July PPI/Core PPI Jumped Unexpectedly

Major economic data is out this morning, and it's having an impact on trading futures. Inflation metrics and employment tallies — both sides of the Fed's dual mandate — were represented. As a result, the Dow moved from +3 points directly ahead of the releases to -180 points currently, the S&P 500 went from -1 point to -30 points and the Nasdaq slid from +7 to -140. The small-cap Russell 2000 has already given up most of its gains from yesterday, -36 points. Producer Price Index (PPI) Jumps 90 Basis Points in a Month Headline PPI — the wholesale side of inflation, as opposed to the retail print Consumer Price Index (CPI) out Tuesday morning — jumped from 0.0% a month ago to +0.9% today, reporting for the month of July. Stripping out volatile food and energy costs, we're still up 90 basis points (bps) on core PPI month over month. Ex-food, energy and trade, we have tripled expectations to +0.6%. These are now at the hottest levels since over year is a slightly different story, as early in the year they were still over +3%. July's headline PPI came in at +3.3% — the highest since February, but also up 90 bps from an upwardly revised +2.4% for June. Core PPI year over year soared +1.1% in one month to +3.7% — the highest level since March. Ex-food, energy and trade rose just 30 bps month over month to +2.8%.To the extent producer prices lead into consumer prices — not completely, but undeniably part of the economic chain — we might expect higher CPI data as of the September print, which hits the tape roughly a week ahead of the next Fed meeting on interest rate policy. Depending on how high those results become may put the rate-cut being priced into the market currently in jeopardy. At very least, I don't hear much about a pending 50-bps cut following this PPI report. Jobless Claims Remain Range-Bound: 224K, 1.95M Weekly Jobless Claims are also out this morning, being a normal Thursday. Initial Claims dipped -3K to 224K week over week, now sub-230K for 6 straight weeks. (Remember the first week of June was 250K with an upward arrow, but these numbers have methodically diminished since.) Recent lows were +219K four weeks Claims notched its 12-straight week above 1.9 million without tipping into the psychologically relevant 2 million longer-term weekly jobless claims. A headline of 1.953 million is down -15K from the downwardly revised 1.968 million the prior week — which, incidentally, is still the highest level we've seen since November 2021. From mid-April through late May, weekly longer-term claims rose +120K. But they have remained frozen just below 2 million since. For some perspective, we spent even a longer time in the 1.8 million range of continuing jobless claims — from late summer 2024 to early spring this year. Also, longer-term claims do have an expiration date, though this is not a straight number across all circumstances. Earnings Reports Ahead of the Open Heavy machinery manufacturer Deere & Co.
