Sassoon Hospital urges NIV to return land amid healthcare expansion plans
This issue was discussed during a review meeting with the Minister of State (MoS) for medical education, Madhuri Misal, on Friday. SGH officials have sent several letters to the State medical education department and the Pune district administration, requesting that the land be returned in accordance with the Bombay Government Premises (Eviction) Act, 1955, and its revised regulations from 2007.
According to SGH officials, the NIV initially leased the land from SGH for 99 years. However, the lease expired in 2001, yet NIV continues to occupy the premises. Although NIV has its own campus in Pashan, the property on Ambedkar Road, which is owned by SGH, remains occupied. SGH officials emphasised this point in a letter to the Pune District Administration, a copy of which has been obtained by Hindustan Times.
Furthermore, since the original 99-year lease is set to expire in June 2026, SGH has requested that the land not be re-leased for another term.
Following the meeting, Misal confirmed the discussion, stating, 'During Friday's review meeting, SGH and BJMC officials raised the issue of land currently occupied by NIV. I have asked them to submit a detailed proposal for consideration. Once we receive the proposal, we will take an appropriate decision.'
SGH officials highlighted a severe space crunch, which has been hindering their ability to meet the rising demand for healthcare services. The hospital has outlined plans to utilise the land for key infrastructure developments, including a physiotherapy college, a dental college, a super-speciality hospital, hostels for postgraduate students and a Dharmashala (rest house) for the families of patients.
Dr Ekanth Pawar, dean of BJMC, emphasised the strategic importance of the land's location. 'The site is ideal for a super-speciality hospital, and we have already submitted a proposal to the government. This facility will help us cater for the large number of patients who currently rely on private hospitals for specialised care. Additionally, we are seeking approval for a dental college and a physiotherapy college,' he said.
Dr Pawar also noted, 'We were informed about the lease's expiration through a letter from the district administration. Given the significant growth in patient numbers and SGH being the only tertiary care government hospital in the region, there is an urgent need for more space to expand.'
SGH is one of the largest government hospitals in the region, treating thousands of patients daily, many from rural and economically disadvantaged areas. The hospital serves patients from Pune, Solapur, Satara, Kolhapur, Sangli, and Ahilya Nagar. The administration has warned that without additional space, SGH's ability to efficiently serve the public could be severely impacted.
Despite repeated attempts to contact them, officials from NIV were unavailable for comment.

Bengaluru: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Wednesday pulled up Karnataka Building and Other Construction Workers Welfare Board for irregular and unauthorised expenditure of Rs 259 crore during the first wave of Covid-19 in 2020. In a report tabled in the legislature, CAG said the board had initially proposed a preventive health training and check-up programme for five lakh registered construction workers across the state. Its first proposal in July 2020, estimated at Rs 10 crore, was rejected by the finance department, which sought more clarity. A second proposal in Dec 2020 was also blocked after the finance department demanded justification for awarding the project to three agencies directly, without following the tender process, and for seeking 4(g) exemption under the Karnataka Transparency in Public Procurement (KTPP) Act. The CAG noted, "Thus, the award of contracts from Sept 2021 to May 2022 in contravention to the act/rules resulted in irregular expenditure of Rs 258.8 crore." Responding to the audit, the govt said in Aug 2024 that the work was entrusted directly since a 4(a) exemption was accorded and that there was no contravention of rules. However, CAG rejected this defence, stating the reply was "unacceptable" as it was meant to address the Covid-19 emergency and criticised the labour department for approving work by splitting them into 30 sub-works of Rs 10 crore each despite finance department objections and without cabinet approval. The report also flagged irregularities in the registration of members. Of the board's 42.5 lakh registered workers, CAG found a significant number were not actually construction workers. IT parks becoming women friendly workplaces, says Veena George
Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala's IT parks are evolving into women-friendly workplaces, said health minister Veena George. She was speaking at a training programme for chairpersons and members of internal committees (ICs) formed in various offices within Technopark on Wednesday. She noted that internal committees were being established in all companies and emphasised that this process was already under way in public sector organisations and IT parks. Training sessions have also been conducted for the film industry to support the formation of similar committees. The minister highlighted that a dedicated portal was launched in 2023 by women and child development department to monitor the functioning of these committees. By March 8, 2025, internal committees were set up in every govt department, she added. "A large number of women are working in the IT sector and more women must come forward in the workforce," the minister said. She stressed that the govt was identifying and addressing the challenges faced by women across various fields. She also appreciated the IT sector for its support of the health department's cancer prevention mass campaign Arogyam Aanandam Akattam Arbudham, which promotes public participation in cancer awareness and prevention. "Ensuring that internal committees' function effectively was the responsibility of both institutions and employers," she said. The training was organised as part of the state's initiative to implement the 2013 Prevention of Sexual Harassment (PoSH) Act in workplaces with 10 or more employees.
