The series follows Ortega, who plays the morbid character Wednesday, as she navigates life at the mysterious private school which 'nurtures outcasts, freaks and monsters'.

Renée Victor, the voice of no-nonsense Abuelita in 'Coco,' dies at 86

Renée Victor, who voiced the no-nonsense, sandal-throwing Abuelita in Disney's animated hit "Coco" and played the wisecracking Lupita on Showtime's "Weeds," has died. She was 86. Victor's death was confirmed Monday by a representative, Julie Smith, who said the actor had lymphoma for several years. She died Friday at her home in Sherman Oaks, California, Smith said, with family by her side. A post on the Instagram feed of Pixar, which produced "Coco," said: "We are heartbroken to hear of the passing of Renée Victor, the voice [of] Abuelita in 'Coco' and an incredible part of the Pixar family. We will always remember you." Victor appeared in 22 episodes of "Weeds" as sassy housekeeper Lupita between 2005 and 2012, among many other TV credits including "ER," "Matlock" and "The Addams Family." But she was perhaps best known for what she called the chancla-throwing grandmother in "Coco," the 2017 family-friendly movie that explored death through the journey of a young Mexican boy to the land of the dead. "I play the part of 'Abuelita,' the chancla throwing grandma that preaches 'No Music!'" she wrote on Instagram, looking back several years ago. "Enjoy 'Coco' with your family this Dia de los Muertos and forever more!" She also looked back at "The Apostle," the 1997 movie that Robert Duvall wrote, directed and starred in. "He took a chance on me with this film," Victor wrote on Instagram. "This is where I got my nickname 'one take Renée,'" she said, adding laughter emojis. "I had a small role but what a great one! Can somebody give me an amen?!" Born in San Antonio, Texas, on July 25, 1938, Victor began her performing career as a singer and dancer. She moved to Los Angeles in the 1960s, according to biography material provided by her representatives, where she launched her career singing with prominent big band leaders Xavier Cugat and Pérez Prado. She also taught Latin dancing, including salsa and the tango. She met her future husband, Ray, during that period, and from 1963 to 1973, they performed together as "Ray & Renée," a variety show that took them around the world — including Australia, where "they enjoyed particular fame," the materials said. In the 1970s, Victor hosted the "Pacesetters" public affairs show on KTLA, her representatives said, and by the '80s had moved into TV and film work. Her film credits, other than "The Apostle," included the 2014 horror film "Paranormal Activity 5: The Marked Ones," "The Doctor" with William Hurt (1991), and "A Night in Old Mexico" (2013), also with Duvall. In 2004, she had a recurring role as Florina Lopez on TV's "ER," and the following year was cast in "Weeds." Other series credits included "Snowpiercer" (2020-2021), "Mayans M.C." (2022), "Dead to Me" (2020-2022), and Amazon's "With Love" (2021-2023). Victor is survived by her daughters, Raquel and Margo Victor, Smith said.

One fan wrote: 'Man Wednesday going to Kansas City to hunt down a serial killer has got me HYPED!!' Another said: 'Jenna Ortega seriously delivers on her character! Looking forward to season 2.' And one keen viewer added: '6 minutes in and I'm already obsessed again. Wednesday carries the entire gothic genre on her shoulders.' Others were pleased by the new direction the series appears to be taking, with one fan writing: 'I am glad they're adding more horror and backstory this season this is about to be peak.' Another added: 'I'm so glad they're making it more adult, I loved the first season but it was too slow and boring for the horror aspect for Wednesday.' The show is one of Netflix's biggest hits, so it's no surprise fans can hardly wait for the much-anticipated season two to drop. The first season, which premiered in 2022, racked up an enormous 252 million views, earning it the top spot on Netflix's list of the most-watched English-language shows of all time. Meanwhile, Tudum has confirmed that Lady Gaga will guest-star in Wednesday season two. The news was officially announced at Netflix Tudum 2025: The Live Event on May 31, where the popstar appeared on stage to celebrate by performing a medley of her hits, including Zombieboy, Bloody Mary and Abracadabra. She will play the mysterious and enigmatic Rosaline Rotwood, a legendary Nevermore teacher who crosses paths with Wednesday. Steve Buscemi, Billie Piper, Joanna Lumley, Thandiwe Newton, Christopher Lloyd and Haley Joel Osment are among the other newcomers for season two. Ahead of the second season arriving in August, co-creators Miles Millar and Alfred Gough have shed light on what viewers can expect, teasing that things at Nevermore get very dark for Wednesday and co… 'There's some moments which are definitely horror movie-worthy,' Miles told Entertainment Weekly. 'We have that in season one, but I think this season there are moments that are very intense, I'll say. 'Season two definitely has some moments which are more straightforward horror, and we're very aware that the show is watched by everybody in terms of the age groups. More Trending 'So we want to make sure that it's never torture porn, but that there's enough bite to it that it feels that there are real stakes and that people die in this world, and it's scary at moments. 'And I think that's the great tonal shift that the show makes between comedy and horror.' Wednesday season 2 will premiere on Netflix on August 6. 'Dark' ITV true crime drama quietly added to Netflix soars up chart

Netflix viewers are bingeing a crime drama detailing the horrific crimes of serial killers Fred and Rose West. The harrowing Netflix documentary Fred & Rose West: A British Horror Story has brought renewed interest to the frightening serial killer case that gripped headlines in the 90s. Viewers are now turning to a dramatisation of the grim case, Appropriate Adult, which was recently added to Netflix and is now ranking in the streaming platform's top 10. The two-part mini series focuses on how Fred and Rose West were brought to justice, first airing on ITV in 2011. As the opening credits state: 'This is a true story. What follows is based on extensive research, interviews and published accounts. Some scenes have been created for the purposes of dramatisation.' Wake up to find news on your TV shows in your inbox every morning with Metro's TV Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your show in the link we'll send you so we can get TV news tailored to you. The drama follows Gloucester social worker Janet Leach (Emily Watson) and her pivotal role in discovering the bodies of women the couple had killed and buried on their property. Dominic West plays Fred West in the drama, while Mr Bates vs The Post Office star Monica Dolan plays his wife Rose. Across the two episodes, we follow Fred's arrest, his subsequent suicide and the lifetime conviction of Rose. West went on to win the Best Actor Bafta for his turn in the chilling drama, while Emily Watson took home the Best Actress gong. Leach became Fred West's 'appropriate adult' – hence the show's title – and sat in on police interviews with him. During these interviews, he revealed in terrifying detail the horrors his victims had faced. Police officers tapped Leach in order to avoid any future insinuation Fred West had not understood the charges he was under investigation for. The Crown star said at the time that inhabiting the serial killer was so difficult it gave him nightmares. 'I have this recurring dream where I'm perched on a wall and Fred West is trying to grab me and pull me down,' he told the BBC. He also defended the drama against accusations it would prove triggering to the victims' families. 'I think it's effective without being sensational in any way,' he continued. 'Thousands of people still go missing in this country every year and are never found. 'Fred West preyed on runaways without being caught for 25 years. We should not forget this case, because there could be others like him. Netflix subscribers have been returning to the drama since the true crime documentary dropped on the streaming service – and it now ranks fifth on the platform's ranking of top TV. Sharing their reviews on IMDB, @truecrimeallthetime said the drama is 'seriously gripping', writing: 'Excellent dramatisation of this deeply disturbing case. Respectfully done with classy performances and simple but effective direction.' @Aimeemcdonald-55532 wrote it is 'definitely a must-see', adding: 'I was very moved by this dramatisation. Brilliant acting which left me with chills. I had to keep reminding myself that these events actually happened, because it's so stomach churning.' More Trending However, not everyone was taken with the dramatisation as @rupie had issues with the apparent sympathetic portrayal of Fred West. They wrote: 'It was repellent – as well as incomprehensible – to watch Leach's developing interest and fascination with Fred West. 'Anyone watching this movie should first do some Googling to find out the details of what Fred and Rosemary West perpetrated. If anyone deserves to be called human monsters, it is this pair. In the light of this knowledge, the script's clear intention – to me anyway – to actually make West into a figure of sympathy is disgusting.' Appropriate Adult is available to stream on Netflix.
