UP to review proposal to refine Latin Honors criteria amid questions on distinction's prestige
For Academic Year 2024–2025, 61% of graduates from UP Diliman were awarded Latin honors. Of the 3,876 total graduates, 2,369 earned distinctions, 241 graduated summa cum laude, 1,143 magna cum laude, and 985 cum laude.
In a statement to PhilSTAR L!fe, the UP Office of the Vice President for Academic Affairs (OVPAA) partly attributed the significant increase to grading adjustments and academic leniencies implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic.
'It is important to consider that most students from this year's graduating batch started their first year in UP during the pandemic in AY 2021–2022,' the OVPAA noted.
The office also cited broader structural factors, such as the implementation of the K-12 basic education program, which may have better equipped students for university-level academic work.
In response to concerns that academic honors may be losing their distinction due to the volume of awardees, UP is evaluating a proposal to adopt a percentile-based honors system.
A technical working group was formed to assess the potential implications of this shift. However, the group has recommended deferring any immediate changes, pending further data from the graduating cohorts of Academic Years 2025–2026 and 2026–2027.
Currently, UP confers Latin honors based on general weighted averages: summa cum laude for a GWA of 1.20 or better, magna cum laude for 1.45 or better, and cum laude for 1.75 or better.
The university emphasized that the review forms part of its broader commitment to upholding academic integrity and excellence.
'UP continues to affirm its deep commitment to its mandate of providing Filipinos with quality education that embodies not only the highest standards of honor and excellence, but also genuine service to the people,' the OVPAA said.

DMW Honors Filipino Volunteers for Selfless Service in Jeddah OFW Caravan
The Bagong Bayani ng Mundo: OFW Serbisyo Caravan held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on August 8 and 9 was a great success, thanks not only to the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and partner agencies but also to the dedicated Filipino volunteers behind the scenes. The DMW recognized the invaluable contributions of Filipino community groups including the OFW Council of Leaders, Guardians International, The Fraternal Order of Eagles – Philippine Eagles Inc. Middle East Region – KSA, the Philippine Nurses Association, and others based in Jeddah. Together, these organizations mobilized over 100 volunteers who helped manage crowds, assisted with registration, and guided fellow OFWs throughout the two-day caravan. DMW Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac, along with Undersecretary Dominique Rubia-Tutay, Assistant Secretary Francis Ron C. De Guzman, OWWA Deputy Administrator Ryan Uy, and Philippine Consul General Rommel Romato, honored the volunteers in a simple ceremony, awarding Certificates of Appreciation for their selfless service. 'Thank you for showing love to our kababayans. This also reflects the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.,' Secretary Cacdac said, expressing deep gratitude for their efforts. Assistant Secretary De Guzman added, 'Events like this succeed not just because of official manpower, but because of the big hearts and willing hands of our fellow Filipinos.' For Eagles Governor Faisal Latif, a Toyota manager in Jeddah, volunteering alongside the Philippine Consulate General represents their organization's motto: 'Service through strong brotherhood.' OCL – Jeddah Director General Mojiedah Dakmash shared that volunteering at the Serbisyo Caravan is part of their 10th anniversary celebrations this August 29, and assured that their group will continue to respond whenever called upon. The Philippine Nurses Association Western Regional President Veronica Filipinas Saha ensured that all caravan participants were healthy and fit to serve, while Guardians Middle East Chairman Romeo Climaco Jr. coordinated their members to assist OFWs and maintain safety throughout the event. The DMW continues to commend the spirit of volunteerism exhibited by Filipinos abroad, embodying true Bayanihan spirit in serving their fellow migrant workers.

Children these days seem to be mollycoddled
Even though Covid happened five years ago, its repercussions are apparent even today. When it happened, everyone had to stay at home. There was WFH (work from home) and home-schooling. Working from home was tough at first because people were so used to seeing colleagues face to face, attending meetings, going to lunch together and generally socialising. It was tough for children too. They desperately wanted to go out and meet their friends in shopping malls or ride their bikes in the streets. But that being said, one thing they were quite happy about was not having to go to school. In their immature minds, that was one giant blessing. After all, which kids actually like going to school?! Five years later, some of these restrictions have now become a habit with many people across the world. So many employees are reluctant to return to work at the office and would prefer to continue working from home despite the many distractions they have there. I know one woman who works in HR and she would often work in the building's public library for no reason other than the fact that she didn't feel like going into the office; at home she said her cats disturbed her. In fact, many potential employees look for companies that have the option to allow their people to work from home and, if the company doesn't, they often reject the job offer. The kids' situation is actually worse when it comes to school. Since Covid, reports across the United States say that there is now a growing trend across the country in which kids are not coming to school. The rate of absence is very high and the excuses range from being unwell to oversleeping. I often feel that the children of today are from the 'mollycoddled generation'. Everything in life is an issue for them and, by extension, for their parents. So much so that children are given special treatment by their parents who themselves did not when they were children. I have yet to see a child not being handed sweets or crisps just because he or she wanted it. I have yet to see parents not give their child, even a baby, a phone to keep them occupied while they ate in a food court. I have yet to see parents not let their toddlers run riot in supermarkets disturbing other shoppers. This is now translating into schoolage children who are refusing to go because they overslept. Why did they oversleep? Well they, and their parents, will tell you that the child was up doing his homework on his laptop. But that is not always true, is it? Yes the kid may have been up on his laptop but it's human nature to be distracted from homework when you have a browser and access to YouTube or Computer Games. Therefore, it's very likely that the kid stayed up playing games or watching videos and that's probably why he or she overslept. I think it's shocking that some schools are now trying to incentivise school attendance by offering children money in return for attending classes! Another incentive put forward is adding attendance to the final grade! So a pupil's grade would include not only how well he did in the exam but how often he actually came to class. What planet are we on? Children and parents should be grateful that they have an education system. That their child has the chance to be educated and, thus, make something of themselves. It almost feels like teachers ought to be grateful that children attend and not the other way round. This was never heard of around 50 years ago. In England, for example, if a child was repeatedly absent from school, there'd be a knock on the door. A school inspector would come to the home and ask where the child is. The idea is to not only make sure he is safe but also to make sure he's not playing truant. In those days, parents made sure that children went to school, unless they had something that was contagious. In those days, parents got into trouble for a child's repeated absence.

CIASI-UAE Solid JUMA joins FilSoC's 6th anniversary celebration in Dubai

'Samahang Ilokano' (CIASI UAE 61892 Solid JUMA) was among the Filipino community groups who took part in the 6th anniversary thanksgiving celebration of the Filipino Social Club (FilSoC). Held on Saturday, July 19, 2025, at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Dubai Deira Creek, the event gathered leaders from accredited Filipino organizations across the UAE for an evening of thanksgiving and cultural pride. The celebration marked FilSoC's six years of uniting Filipino groups, promoting volunteerism, and supporting the welfare and identity of Filipinos in Dubai.
