Over 230 community firefighting teams formed in Sarawak since 2021

SARIKEI (May 26): A total of 234 Community Firefighting Teams (Pasukan Bomba Komuniti, PBK) have been established across Sarawak between 2021 and April 2025, involving 2,981 members, said Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) director Jamri Masran.
He said the figures reflect encouraging public participation in community-based firefighting efforts.
'In retrospect, departmental records from 2021 to April 2025 show that 98 PBKs were set up specifically in longhouses throughout Sarawak, involving 1,419 members,' Jamri noted.
He emphasised that these community firefighting teams bring significant benefits, particularly in terms of safety for residents in longhouse communities.
Jamri said this during the closing ceremony of the 2025 Gawai Dayak Festive Season Safety campaign yesterday at Rumah Panjang Patre Ambit, Skim B, Bintangor.
According to Jamri, the campaign aimed to raise fire safety awareness among the public, especially longhouse residents, during festive seasons.
'In moments of celebration, we must not overlook safety aspects, particularly the risk of fires caused by unsafe electrical usage, open stoves, or uncontrolled open burning.
'This campaign is a noble effort to strengthen ties between local communities and Bomba, while encouraging collective responsibility for neighborhood safety,' he said.
He stressed that the department is committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of all communities, including those in rural areas.

One dead, another critically injured in Bintulu accident near Nyalau Bridge
BINTULU, May 30 — A man was killed and another seriously injured in a road accident near the Nyalau Bridge along Jalan Pesisir Bintulu-Miri yesterday. According to Samalaju Fire and Rescue (Bomba) chief Irwin Abidin, a team from his station was dispatched to the scene after receiving a distress call at 1.59pm. The incident involved a white pick-up truck carrying two Indonesian nationals. 'One of the victims identified as Dafid Duanda Putra was found trapped in the driver's seat and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel,' he said in a statement. The second victim, known only as Ikhsan, was ejected from the vehicle and suffered serious head injuries. He was given initial treatment at the scene before being transported to Bintulu Hospital at 3.03pm. Community fire brigades boost safety ahead of Gawai
A TOTAL of 234 community fire brigades have been formed across Sarawak since 2021 to boost fire preparedness, especially in longhouses and remote areas. Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) director Jamri Masran said the initiative has so far involved 2,981 volunteers, including 1,419 members from 98 teams based in longhouses, which are considered high-risk due to their wooden construction and rural locations. 'The community's involvement is very encouraging and proves that awareness of safety is increasing, especially among rural communities,' Jamri told Bernama. He was speaking at the closing of the Gawai Dayak 2025 Festival Season Safety Campaign at the Pitre Abit Tayup Longhouse in Skim Bintangor. He said the establishment of the community fire brigades not only increased the community's ability to deal with fires early but also strengthened cooperation between JBPM and local communities. The role of community brigades, he said, became especially important during the Gawai Dayak festive season, which usually saw an increase in the risk of fires breaking out due to excessive use of electricity, open stoves, and uncontrolled burning. 'Longhouses are the cultural heritage of the Dayak community and a symbol of unity, but the flammable wooden structure makes them very vulnerable to fire hazards.
