Sven Goran Eriksson home price slashed by £400,000 as family cut price to pay off debts
The former England manager loved his lakeside home but it must be sold after he died with debts
Sven-Göran Eriksson's £2 million lakeside home has still not sold nine months after his death so estate agents have been forced to drop the price by £400,000 in the hope it will attract a buyer. The late football manager 's mansion in Sunne in Sweden went on the market following his death from cancer in August last year at the age of 76.
Björkefors Manor boasts seven bedrooms, six bathrooms, a high-end kitchen, reception rooms, a music room, a library along with a pool house, a sauna and a tennis court. The ex-England boss bought it back in 2002 for around £400,000 but, over the years, it has gained more in value.
Following his death, his partner Yaniseth Alcides and his children Lina and Johann discovered that the soccer chief was more than £8million debt. As a result, the house was put on the market for around £2million and they were also forced to sell many of his personal trophies and cups.
However, it seems interest in the property has been slow.
And now the estate agent has decided to lower the price to around £1.6million in the hope someone will now buy it.
New photos of the mansion are being taken too in the hope it will bring more interest.
Real estate broker Henrik Flinta from Sotheby's International Realty said: 'The problem is that it is far too expensive for many. It was a very high price for being in Värmland.
'There are certainly many Värmlanders who want Björkefors. The problem is that it's far too expensive for many. It was a very high price for being in Värmland. There are many who want it, but they don't have the money. We have had a few viewings, but have not reached our goal. Now we hope for renewed interest.'
Sven's family unfortunately learned on his death that the former England manager owed a total of £8.64 million (118 million Swedish Krona), and had assets of £4.8m, leaving his estate with a hefty deficit.
The largest single share in the new figures was tax debts in the UK, totalling £7.25 million.
In 2011 Eriksson went to court, after one of his financial advisors Samir Khan allegedly accepted 'unlimited access' to Sven's wealth and proceeded to use his money in dubious investments, including property schemes. Sven ended up £10 million in debt.
In the Prime documentary 'Sven' made shortly before his death, Sven looked back and said: "One day, I phoned the bank and asked them to do a transfer, and they said, you don't have any cash. I said 'what's that?'."
He added: "Stupid, not as stupid as him, but still stupid.
"My family, they were destroyed. And I said, 'Well, come on, I'll earn more money then'."
His son and daughter were also seen speaking about what happened.
Sven's daughter Lina said: "Dad is really good in a lot of areas in life, but a lot of the time I wish that he had had a really good mentor."
His son Johan added: "Definitely worried sometimes that he could be a bit more careful."
Sven himself delivered his own poignant goodbye message in the Prime Video film.
Sven said: "I had a good life. I think we are all scared of the day when we die, but life is about death as well. You have to learn to accept it for what it is.
"Hopefully at the end people will say yeah he was a good man, but everyone will not say that.
"I hope you will remember me as a positive guy trying to do everything he could do.
"Don't be sorry, smile. Thank you for everything, coaches, players, the crowds, it's been fantastic. Take care of yourself and take care of your life. And live it. Bye."

Chelsea REFUSE to match asking price for Serie A star - and hold further talks over summer move for Premier League striker after confirming £30m Liam Delap signing
Chelsea are refusing to match AC Milan 's asking price for goalkeeper Mike Maignan despite having signed Liam Delap in a cut-price deal. The Blues will not pay the £25million fee which the Italian side have valued their goalkeeper at. Chelsea believe that the French international, who has one year remaining of his contract, is worth nearer to £10m. The 29-year-old is yet to sign a contract extension at AC Milan but no bid has been forthcoming. Maignan moved to Italy four years ago after six seasons with Lille, where he won Ligue 1 in 2021. He lifted the Serie A title with Milan in 2022 and the Supercoppa Italiana in 2024. Chelsea already have five goalkeepers in their squad but none have convinced Blues fans as they prepare for a return to the Champions League next season. Robert Sanchez, Filip Jorgensen, Djordje Petrovic, Mike Penders and Kepa Arrizabalaga are all currently contracted at Stamford Bridge but they have not persuaded the Chelsea hierarchy against looking for another keeper this window. Meanwhile, the west London outfit are also holding talks with Brighton star Joao Pedro. Chelsea are among a number of teams interested and also held a meeting regarding the Brazilian last month. The 23-year-old cost £30m from Watford in 2023 and scored an impressive 10 goals while claiming four assists in the Premier League last season. Chelsea would be willing to offer around £50million with the possibility of other players being offered in the deal, potentially even on loan. Pedro would further boost Chelsea's attack after they completed the signing of Liam Delap from Ipswich on a six-year deal on Wednesday. The 22-year-old became Enzo Maresca's second signing of the summer after they triggered his £30m release clause. The two clubs came to an agreement over Delap last week, and after undergoing a medical he has put pen to paper on a long-term contract at Stamford Bridge. The striker had interest from Manchester United, Newcastle, Nottingham Forest and Everton, after an impressive first full season in the Premier League. Delap scored 12 Premier League goals in 37 appearances after leaving Manchester City last summer. Pep Guardiola's side will receive 30 per cent of the fee as per their sell-on clause.

Reddit sues AI startup Anthropic for breach of contract, ‘unfair competition'
Reddit is suing artificial intelligence startup Anthropic for what it's calling a breach of contract and for engaging in 'unlawful and unfair business acts' by using the social media company's platform and data without authority. The lawsuit, filed in San Francisco on Wednesday, claims that Anthropic has been training its models on the personal data of Reddit users without obtaining their consent. Reddit alleges that it has been harmed by the unauthorized commercial use of its content. Reddit shares closed up more than 6% on Wednesday. The company opened the complaint by calling Anthropic a 'late-blooming' AI company that 'bills itself as the white knight of the AI industry.' Reddit follows by saying, 'It is anything but.' 'For its part, despite what its marketing material says, Anthropic does not care about Reddit's rules or users: it believes it is entitled to take whatever content it wants and use that content however it desires, with impunity,' the filing said. In an emailed statement, an Anthropic spokesperson said, 'We disagree with Reddit's claims and will defend ourselves vigorously.' Since the generative AI boom began with the launch of OpenAI's ChatGPT in late 2022, Reddit has been at the forefront of the conversation. Its 20-year-old site is filled with user-generated information about hundreds of thousands of topics and has been a main source of training for large AI models, including Anthropic's Claude. Reddit announced a partnership with OpenAI in May that will allow the company to train its AI models on Reddit content. The company has a similar agreement with Google. In the lawsuit, Reddit said that 'other giants in the AI space understand and respect Reddit's rules.' It named OpenAI and Google as companies that 'are permitted to use public Reddit content but only after agreeing to Reddit's licensing terms' protecting user privacy. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is a former board member and major shareholder in Reddit, with a stake now worth well over $1 billion. In March, Anthropic was valued at $61.5 billion in a funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners, and including participation from Salesforce Ventures and Cisco Investments. The company, founded in 2021 by ex-OpenAI executives, has been backed heavily by Amazon. Reddit held its IPO in 2024 and now has a market cap of about $22 billion. Reddit says it has established rules dictating how its data can be used, which the company says in the filing 'are clearly memorialized' in the Reddit's user agreement. 'While Reddit has always been of the mind that the community should be open to all humans looking for connection and community, it has never allowed its platform and the countless communities who find a home on it to be appropriated by commercial actors seeking to create billion-dollar enterprises and offering nothing in return to Reddit and its users,' the complaint says. Reddit said the aim of the lawsuit is to seek damages and compel Anthropic to abide by its contractual and legal obligations. It's asking for a jury trial.
