The Los Angeles Lakers are entering a crucial offseason following an earlier-than-expected playoff exit. The Lakers' front office will need to get creative this summer to put together a much more competitive roster.
Los Angeles will be looking to go after upgrades to the frontcourt, but the team also needs more help along the wing as well. The Lakers could use more defensive help, ensuring the team to be able to be well-rounded on both ends of the floor.
One name that has been linked to the Lakers is All-Star forward Andrew Wiggins of the Miami Heat. Lakers insider Jovan Buha mentioned him as a potential trade target for the offseason.
"I like that trade," Buha said of a hypothetical deal that would send Lakers forward Rui Hachimura to the Heat for Wiggins. "I know Wiggins has been a popular guy for Lakers Twitter. He is someone that — I think among the realistic options — he is someone that would check a lot of boxes for the Lakers."

Phillies Urged To Trade With Divisional Rival For All-Star Closer

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. The Philadelphia Phillies and the New York Mets are locked in a race for the division crown, and Sports Illustrated's Maddy Hudak urges the Phillies to trade inside the division to turn the tide of the battle for the National League East. Hudak tagged Washington Nationals closer Kyle Finnegan as the target the Phillies should home in on at the trade deadline. SEATTLE, WA - MAY 29: Relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan #67 and catcher Keibert Ruiz #20 of the Washington Nationals celebrate after a game against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on May 29, 2025 in... SEATTLE, WA - MAY 29: Relief pitcher Kyle Finnegan #67 and catcher Keibert Ruiz #20 of the Washington Nationals celebrate after a game against the Seattle Mariners at T-Mobile Park on May 29, 2025 in Seattle, Washington. The Nationals won 9-3 in tenth innings. More Photo byThe Nationals are a rebuilding team, and Finnegan will be a free agent after this season, lining them up perfectly to bring in talent in return for their All-Star closer. Finnegan was an All-Star last season and is off to another fantastic start this season with a 2.25 ERA and 18 saves in 21 chances so far. Finnegan would bring certainty to the back end of the Philadelphia bullpen, a group that has been among the league's worst in ERA. The Phillies brought in closer Jordan Romano from the Toronto Blue Jays in free agency this season, and he has been given 10 chances while saving eight. Romano has had his struggles, and the Phillies do not have a clear-cut ninth-inning man, a role that is relied on heavily in October. While Finnegan does not immediately jump the Phillies into purebred title contenders, his presence in the back end of the bullpen could settle the group and bring them close to the major league average. Hypothetical Trade Outline Sees Yankees Acquiring Cy Young Winner At Deadline

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The New York Yankees lost Gerrit Cole to Tommy John surgery before the season began, and now Heavy MLB's Cole Shelton believes reigning Cy Young winner Chris Sale could be the answer for the Yankees as the season closes in on the All-Star break. After a miserable start, the Atlanta Braves' season has not taken off since the return of their superstar Ronald Acuña Jr. They entered Thursday in fourth place in the National League East. MLB Analyst Chris Rose believes Sale could headline the market of starting pitchers in late July. MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - JUNE 09: Chris Sale #51 of the Atlanta Braves throws a pitch in the first inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on June 09, 2025 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN - JUNE 09: Chris Sale #51 of the Atlanta Braves throws a pitch in the first inning against the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field on June 09, 2025 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Photo bySale was riddled with injuries with the Boston Red Sox, but after an outstanding season with the Braves last year, his career has been set back on track, and with a 2.79 ERA and 107 strikeouts is likely to be called about if the Braves are unable to correct course . Shelton proposed the Yankees send two top-10 prospects to the Braves in return for Sale. The Yankees would part ways with outfielder Spencer Jones and left-handed pitcher Brock Selvidge. If Sale is on the market, plenty of teams that are shopping for pitching will be calling for him. That reality, combined with a team option to keep Sale next season as well, will likely drive the price up. The Yankees are hungry for another World Series championship, and after falling short in the Fall Classic last season, they could find themselves more aggressive in the trade market than normal this season. Dodgers Make Worrying Announcement About NL Batting Leader

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The reigning World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers, have been anything but dominant over the past month. In fact, they've been a .500 team — winning 15 and losing 15 in their last 30 games. The reason? There are a lot of reasons, of course, but perhaps the most important is injuries. The Dodgers currently have 14 pitchers on the injured list — a typical major league pitching staff consists of 13 pitchers — and the injury bug has bitten position players as well. Prior to the rubber match of a three-game set against divisional rival San Diego Padres on Wednesday, Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts made a concerning announcement about one of them. But this wasn't just any position player. Cox/Getty Images This was the current National League batting leader, eight-time All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman. After Freeman failed to run out a ground ball that turned into a game-ending double play — which didn't really matter in the 11-1 Dodger loss, anyway — Roberts explained that Freeman had a new injury, to his quad muscle. "He was not going to come out of the game, so for me, my deal with him is, if you're going to play today and stay in the game last night, then manage it," Roberts told reporters, according to Dodger Blue. "So let's not go crazy on the bases." Freeman led the NL with a .347 batting average prior to Friday's game against the San Francisco Giants. He also leads in double with 21. Roberts, who has skippered the Dodgers since 2015, went on to explain Freeman has "got the ankle thing and he's dealing with his quad." Freeman underwent ankle surgery in the offseason to repair a severe sprain suffered in the last week of the 2024 regular season. He then reinjured the ankle in March when he reportedly slipped in the shower in his home. Freeman was in the lineup on Wednesday despite the quad injury, recording one hit in four at-bats plus a walk and a run scored in the Los Angeles 5-2 victory. As of Thursday, the Dodgers had made no further announcement on Freeman's latest injury. More MLB: Dodgers' Freddie Freeman Gets Injury Update After Early-Season Setback
