Is the Duolingo owl death connected to the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef?

USA Today12-02-2025

Drake and the Duolingo Owl might be at odds with one another.
If you're unfamiliar with Duolingo, it's a lovely tool that teaches you how to speak different languages. It's really cool because Duolingo tries to make it engaging as people learn.
So, in other words, the company doesn't take themselves too seriously.
They like to have fun, which might explain their seemingly unhinged posts in the weeks before the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Here's what we mean.
About two weeks before Kendrick Lamar took the stage, Duolingo dropped a wild post trolling Drake while referencing a song—'BBL Drizzy' (Warning: NSFW language)—that also trolls the rapper.
glad i'm not the only owl with a BBL on this list https://t.co/RY7KS0TCIo

On the day of the show, they trolled him again, very similar to the way Kendrick did during his set.
But they weren't done. Duolingo cranked out even more jokes, including a viral meme from Kendrick's 'Not Like Us' performance.
However, it went downhill fast. Duo, the green owl mascot, seen in much of the company's content, suddenly died.

And things got weird. Without much explanation, TSA got involved.
Then, Duo was given a funeral and an obituary a short time later with a sly note that the team was investigating 'Jimmy'—a possible nod to Wheelchair Jimmy, the nickname for Drake's character on Degrassi.
We're currently investigating Jimmy.

So many people were distraught over Duo, including Dua Lipa.

However, a cause of death has been identified, with more details on the way.
UPDATE: Officials have identified cause of death. More details to follow.
Thank you for holding space for Dualingo. 💚 https://t.co/cecyD6KIHi

Was Drake involved? Was it someone else? No one knows.
This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

The 'Top Chef Canada' star opened his new Afro-Caribbean restaurant in the Fairfax District last week

The 'Top Chef Canada' star opened his new Afro-Caribbean restaurant in the Fairfax District last week originally appeared on L.A. Mag. Jamaican-Canadian chef Adrian Forte was originally on the college football track. However, when injury struck, the food lover — whose maternal and paternal grandmothers ran a restaurant in his hometown of Kingston — decided to attend Toronto's Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts at George Brown College. After graduating in 2011, Forte opened some of Toronto's buzziest burger joints and served as a culinary producer for Iron Chef before becoming the first Black contestant on Food Network Canada's Top Chef. He placed as a semifinalist in Season 8, then followed it up with television appearances, brand partnerships and a cookbook, Yawd (Random House, 2022) — featuring over 100 modern Afro-Caribbean recipes. On account of his ties in the entertainment industry, Forte worked as a private chef for friends including Drake, Alicia Keys and the late Virgil Abloh (who wrote the foreword for Yawd) — and served as the Culinary Director for Turks & Caicos' Emara Estate, the luxury private resort formerly owned by Prince. Upon moving to L.A., he noticed a lack of Afro-Caribbean restaurants on the West Coast, so he teamed with founder/owner Sam Jordan (formerly of Olivetta and Issima) to open Lucia ( in the Fairfax District. Lucia (meaning 'light") made its debut on May 28, and brings the bold flavors and rich culture of the Caribbean Island to L.A. through dishes like plantains, coconut fried chicken and jerked ribeye steak — paired with cocktails employing similar island-grown ingredients and spices and Caribbean rums. Here are the spots where Forte's found big flavors in Los Angeles. Curry PuffsCobi's [Ordering] the curry puffs here is nonnegotiable! Light, flaky, buttery wrappers encase a potato filling that's rich with umami. There's a beautiful depth of flavor lifted by the tamarind ketchup, which adds just the right touch of sweetness and tang to balance it all out. It's the kind of bite that makes you pause mid-conversation.$14, 2104 Main St., Santa Monica, Fish CongeeLittle Fish Everyone talks about the fried fish sandwich, and it's great, but the breakfast menu? That's the real gem. I go for the whitefish congee — it's silky, savory and perfectly seasoned, topped with pickled mushrooms and a marinated soy egg with the dreamiest jammy center. Their crispy nori potatoes ($9) don't get enough love, but they're the sleeper hit, especially alongside the grilled shrimp sausage breakfast sandwich ($12). Honestly, the whole menu slaps. Zero misses.$16, 1606 Sunset Blvd., Echo Park, Catalana RisottoMuse My wife booked this spot for us recently, and it blew me away. It's got that perfect low-key, intimate energy that makes it ideal for date night. The chef-owner makes the rounds, chatting with every table, which brings a personal touch that's rare. We ordered the full menu but the prawn risotto was the standout. Luxurious, packed with flavor, and topped with a delicate prawn tartare. They even brought out the fresh prawn heads and offered to fry them up with a vibrant herb pistou — two knockout dishes from one pristine ingredient. It's thoughtful cooking, through and through.$90, 108 W. Channel Road, Santa Monica, This story was originally reported by L.A. Mag on Jun 7, 2025, where it first appeared.

What Makes His Taste So Good?

Perhaps you've seen Beyoncé soaring over crowds in a floating horseshoe at her Cowboy Carter tour performances, or riding a metallic mechanical bull. If you've wondered who came up with those stunts, the answer involves Willo Perron. 'She really is, in my eyes, the last of a type of an entertainer-performer,' Mr. Perron, the tour's stage designer, said over tea at Corner Bar, a restaurant on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, in April. 'Really, I've never seen somebody work so diligently.' He was speaking with the perspective of someone who has also worked with Rihanna (on her Super Bowl LVII halftime show), with Drake (on the Aubrey and the Three Migos tour) and with Florence and the Machine (on the group's High As Hope tour). 'It makes you have to kind of show up at such a high level all the time,' Mr. Perron said of working with Beyoncé. 'And it's good, it's like playing a sport with somebody who is much better than you. Hopefully, it makes you a little bit better yourself.' Mr. Perron, 51, is one of those people who is hard to put a label on professionally — the type of creative mind whose fluency in various mediums has led some to call him a cultural polymath and others a world builder. 'What I do is like planting seeds with no expectations,' he said. 'Just constantly planting seeds and planting seeds. And then if something grows, then I give it attention. And then simultaneously, this thing will grow over here and I'll give that a little bit of attention.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.

Biggest lottery win in UK history up for grabs in £208m EuroMillions draw

A UK ticket-holder could win the biggest lottery prize the country has ever seen tonight if they match the numbers in Friday's EuroMillions draw. The jackpot has rolled over again to an estimated £208 million after Tuesday's £199 million draw, which would also have been a record-breaking amount, had no winners. The jackpot on Friday would be the largest prize the UK has seen, National Lottery operator Allwyn said. Andy Carter, senior winners' adviser at Allwyn, said: 'We are now on the verge of potentially creating the biggest National Lottery winner this country has ever seen – making a single UK winner instantly richer than the likes of Adele and Dua Lipa while also landing them at the number one spot on The National Lottery's biggest wins list.' Here are the 10 biggest UK lottery wins to date – all from EuroMillions draws – and what some of the winners did with their fortunes. Anonymous, £195,707,000 A UK ticket-holder scooped a EuroMillions jackpot of £195 million on July 19 2022. Joe and Jess Thwaite, £184,262,899.10 Joe and Jess Thwaite, from Gloucester, scooped a then record-breaking £184,262,899 with a Lucky Dip ticket for the draw on May 10 2022. At the time, Joe was a communications sales engineer, and Jess ran a hairdressing salon with her sister. Anonymous, £177,033,699.20 A UK ticket-holder became the third biggest National Lottery winner of all time after receiving a £177 million jackpot. The single-ticket holder, who chose to remain anonymous, came forward to claim the EuroMillions jackpot after the draw on November 26 2024. The winner became immediately wealthier than popstar Dua Lipa, who is worth an estimated £104 million, and Michael Buble, worth around £63 million. Anonymous, £171,815,297.80 A UK ticket-holder scooped £171,815,297.80 in the September 23 2022 draw – at the time the country's third biggest National Lottery win. Anonymous, £170,221,000 The fifth biggest winner of the National Lottery to date scooped £170 million in 2019 after matching all the numbers in a Must Be Won draw on October 8. Colin and Chris Weir, £161,653,000 Colin and Chris Weir, from Largs, North Ayrshire, bagged their historic winnings on July 12 2011, making them the biggest UK winners at the time. Colin used £2.5 million of his fortune to invest in his beloved Partick Thistle Football Club, which led to one of the stands at the stadium being named after him. He later acquired a 55% shareholding in the club, which was to be passed into the hands of the local community upon his death. He died in December 2019, aged 71. The couple also set up the Weir Charitable Trust in 2013 and donated £1 million to the Scottish independence referendum in 2014. They divorced in the same year of Colin's death. Adrian and Gillian Bayford, £148,656,000 Adrian and Gillian won 190 million euros in a EuroMillions draw on August 10, 2012, which came to just over £148 million. The couple bought a Grade II-listed estate in Cambridgeshire, complete with cinema and billiards room, but it was sold in 2021, some years after the pair divorced. Anonymous, £123,458,008 The seventh biggest National Lottery winner won a Superdraw rollover jackpot on June 11 2019, and decided not to go public with their success. Anonymous, £122,550,350 After nine rollovers, one lucky anonymous ticket-holder bagged more than £122 million in April 2021. Anonymous, £121,328,187 Another of the UK's top 10 lottery winners found their fortune through a Superdraw jackpot rollover, this time in April 2018.
