Is the Duolingo owl death connected to the Drake and Kendrick Lamar beef?
Drake and the Duolingo Owl might be at odds with one another.
If you're unfamiliar with Duolingo, it's a lovely tool that teaches you how to speak different languages. It's really cool because Duolingo tries to make it engaging as people learn.
So, in other words, the company doesn't take themselves too seriously.
They like to have fun, which might explain their seemingly unhinged posts in the weeks before the Super Bowl Halftime Show. Here's what we mean.
About two weeks before Kendrick Lamar took the stage, Duolingo dropped a wild post trolling Drake while referencing a song—'BBL Drizzy' (Warning: NSFW language)—that also trolls the rapper.

On the day of the show, they trolled him again, very similar to the way Kendrick did during his set.
But they weren't done. Duolingo cranked out even more jokes, including a viral meme from Kendrick's 'Not Like Us' performance.
However, it went downhill fast. Duo, the green owl mascot, seen in much of the company's content, suddenly died.

And things got weird. Without much explanation, TSA got involved.
Then, Duo was given a funeral and an obituary a short time later with a sly note that the team was investigating 'Jimmy'—a possible nod to Wheelchair Jimmy, the nickname for Drake's character on Degrassi.

Jamaican-Canadian chef Adrian Forte was originally on the college football track. However, when injury struck, the food lover — whose maternal and paternal grandmothers ran a restaurant in his hometown of Kingston — decided to attend Toronto's Centre for Hospitality and Culinary Arts at George Brown College. After graduating in 2011, Forte opened some of Toronto's buzziest burger joints and served as a culinary producer for Iron Chef before becoming the first Black contestant on Food Network Canada's Top Chef. He placed as a semifinalist in Season 8, then followed it up with television appearances, brand partnerships and a cookbook, Yawd (Random House, 2022) — featuring over 100 modern Afro-Caribbean recipes. On account of his ties in the entertainment industry, Forte worked as a private chef for friends including Drake, Alicia Keys and the late Virgil Abloh (who wrote the foreword for Yawd) — and served as the Culinary Director for Turks & Caicos' Emara Estate, the luxury private resort formerly owned by Prince. Upon moving to L.A., he noticed a lack of Afro-Caribbean restaurants on the West Coast, so he teamed with founder/owner Sam Jordan (formerly of Olivetta and Issima) to open Lucia ( in the Fairfax District. Perhaps you've seen Beyoncé soaring over crowds in a floating horseshoe at her Cowboy Carter tour performances, or riding a metallic mechanical bull. If you've wondered who came up with those stunts, the answer involves Willo Perron. 'She really is, in my eyes, the last of a type of an entertainer-performer,' Mr. Perron, the tour's stage designer, said over tea at Corner Bar, a restaurant on the Lower East Side of Manhattan, in April. 'Really, I've never seen somebody work so diligently.'
