Shubman Gill gets Steve Waugh's backing as Test captain: Indian cricket in good hands
Legendary Australia captain Steve Waugh has called Shubman Gill an excellent choice to lead India in Test cricket. Gill has been named India's 37th Test captain as he took over the reins from Rohit Sharma following the latter's retirement from the longest format. Gill will be leading a young Indian side after Rohit, Virat Kohli and Ravichandran Ashwin bid adieu to the format.advertisementWhile many experts have expressed their reservations around Shubman's ascent to the leadership position, he's got the backing from Steve Waugh. The legendary cricketer has rated him as a good choice but said that he will have to grow into the role where he will be put under immense pressure."But they're in good hands. Shubham Gill is an excellent player. Very good under pressure. Thinks well. He's respected by his team, so he'll be a good choice, but you've got to give him time to grow into the role. It's a big responsibility. Representing 1.4 to 1.5 billion people. A lot of pressure," Waugh told ANI.
Gill will be leading India in the upcoming tour of England as they begin their new cycle of the World Test Championship. He has played 32 Test matches so far and scored 1893 runs at an average of 35.05 with five hundreds and seven fifties.advertisementHe has the experience of leading on five occasions in first-class cricket. The 25-year-old will be having Rishabh Pant as his deputy as the duo has been entrusted to usher the Indian Test team into a new era. He's currently leading the Gujarat Titans (GT) in the ongoing Indian Premier League 2025 (IPL 2025). GT are enjoying a successful season as they're ranked second on the points table with 18 points from 14 matches.

Finch Criticises Labuschagne's Approach For WTC Final: 'Can't Just Allow...'
Last Updated: Marnus Labuschagne is averaging a terrible 28.33 in the ongoing cycle of the World Test Championship and could lose his spot for the final against South Africa. Former Australia captain Aaron Finch addressed No.3 Marnus Labuschagne's ongoing struggles and raised doubts over his form and tempo in the middle ahead of the World Test Championship final. Finch believes Labuschagne's inability to put the pressure back on the bowlers has compounded his problems. Unable to force-shirt lengths against seamers targeting the stumps, the vulnerable right-hander has averaged 28.33 in this WTC cycle with a strike rate of 46.40 and a solitary ton. 'It's a difficult one because Marnus hasn't scored the runs at No. 3 and the way that he's been playing has probably been the concern for me," Finch told ESPNcricinfo. 'I mean his strike rate has plummeted over the last 18 months. He is not putting any pressure back on the opposition at all. And when you're batting in that position, you have to be prepared to counterattack at certain times." 'You can't just allow the best bowlers in the world to bowl with a new ball at you over and over without forcing their hand a little bit. You're going to get a good one. We've seen wickets around the world have probably been better for fast bowling over the last couple of years, so you can't afford to just sit there and wait to score." Finch's remarks came as pressure continues to mount on Labuschagne's spot amid the return of bright allrounder Cameron Green into the top six for the South African showdown at Lord's from June 11. With Green set to take his place back after an injury, the selectors are left with a huge call to make on Labuschagne, who could well be making way for the attacking Sam Konstas. Australia denied entry to Lord's ahead of WTC final amid India's training: Reports
The Australian men's cricket team were denied entry to the training facility at Lord's on Saturday for training purposes ahead of their World Test Championship final against South Africa on Saturday, according to media reports. Reports say that the reason Australia was denied entry was because they were told that the training ground at Lord's wasn't available. While the exact reason why Pat Cummins and his team were not allowed remains unknown, Code Sports reports that members of the Indian team, who are in England for a five-match Test series, were training at the same location. A report by an Australian media house said that the Indian team was permitted to train at Lord's 'at the expense of the Australian team' as Cummins' men were 'booted out' of the venue. The report also emphasised the fact that the Indian team will play its first Test against Australia not before June 20, while the WTC final is scheduled to start on Wednesday. However, after facing rejection initially, the Australians got access on Sunday and managed to get some practice ahead of their final. 'I think this is the best version of the stadium this morning. There's no one around, which is great. I'm sure it will be much more civil this time around,' said Cummins, referring to how the Australians have faced hostility at Lords from the English crowd. 'Things got pretty heated in the middle of that Ashes series, but I think a lot of them will have learned their lesson, and I'm sure they'll be very polite,' he added.

Last Updated: Shaw opened the innings for North Mumbai Panthers on Sunday and, with the help of 12 fours and three sixes, scored 75 runs from 34 balls. Prithvi Shaw is back with a bang! The 25-year-old right-handed batter from Mumbai, who went unsold in the IPL 2025 mega auctions last year, hammered 75 runs from just 34 balls for North Mumbai Panthers in the T20 Mumbai match played against Triumphs Knights MNE on Sunday, June 8. Shaw, who has played five Tests, six ODIs and one T20I for India since making his international debut against the West Indies in October 2018, overall has 137 runs to his name in five matches played so far in T20 Mumbai 2025.
