YSRCP MLC Varudu Kalyani slams Andhra Pradesh govt on completion of one year, says women betrayed by NDA coalition
Speaking at a round table meeting organised today to discuss the impact of one year of NDA coalition rule, YSRCP MLC Varudu Kalyani highlighted several key concerns regarding women's welfare and safety under the current government.
She stated, 'This meeting was focused on the welfare of women and the increasing atrocities against women under the NDA coalition government. Many women participants expressed their deep disappointment, saying they had trusted and voted for the coalition parties, only to be betrayed. Not a single major promise made by the current government has been fulfilled, and women's safety has been completely neglected. On average, 70 to 80 cases of atrocities against women are being reported every day in Andhra Pradesh. This alone reflects the deteriorating condition of law and order in the state.'
She further added, 'In the last one year, the coalition government hasn't even conducted a single review on women's safety. In contrast, during our YSRCP government, CM Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy gave top priority to women's safety and implemented 99 percent of the promises made to the people. Our police were deployed to protect citizens and implement welfare schemes. But today, they are being misused to frame false cases against YSRCP leaders instead of ensuring women's safety.'
Kalyani also pointed out the government's financial mismanagement: 'In just one year, the NDA coalition has borrowed Rs 1.65 lakh crore, while our government borrowed Rs 3.5 lakh crore over five years. They have already borrowed more than 50 percent of what we did in our full term.'
She concluded by saying, 'We will continue to fight against this government until they implement the promised schemes. The people, especially women, are waiting for Jagan Mohan Reddy's return to power because of the good governance he delivered.'
Criticising TDP leader Nara Lokesh, she remarked, 'When Jagan Mohan Reddy was Chief Minister, Lokesh used to oppose the education policies. But now, they've simply renamed our 'Amma Vodi' scheme as 'Talli Ki Vandanam' while failing to implement it properly for an entire year. Just before the elections, they announced financial assistance but deducted Rs 2,000 from each beneficiary. They promised Rs 15,000 but disbursed only Rs 13,000. This clearly shows their poor commitment and false promises. They should think carefully before making statements and honour what they say.' (ANI)

NEW DELHI: The success of Operation Sindoor will be hailed at the Independence Day celebrations at Red Fort on Friday, three months after Indian forces hit terror and military targets in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. 'The invitation cards are also carrying the watermark of Chenab bridge, depicting the rise of 'Naya Bharat,'' the defence ministry said in a statement. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will lead the celebrations at the 79th Independence Day, and address the nation from the ramparts of the Red Fort. He is expected to talk about the operation in his speech. 'As the nation is making giant strides towards realising the government's vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047, the theme of this year's celebrations is Naya Bharat. The celebrations will serve as a platform to commemorate the continuing rise of a prosperous, secure and bold Naya Bharat and provide renewed power to surge further ahead on the path to progress,' the ministry said. The success of Operation Sindoor is being hailed at a time when the government has made it clear that strikes against terror mark a new normal for India. India launched the operation in the early hours of May 7 and struck terror and military installations in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) following the April 22 Pahalgam terror strike. Between the launch of the operation in the early hours of May 7 and the ceasefire on May 10 evening, Indian forces bombed nine terror camps in Pakistan and PoK, killing at least 100 terrorists, and the Indian Air Force struck targets at 13 Pakistani airbases and military installations. The operation was recently discussed in Parliament too. Lieutenant Colonel Harsh Gupta and Havildar Surinder Singh designed the logo of Operation Sindoor. The PM will be greeted by defence minister Rajnath Singh, minister of state for defence Sanjay Seth, defence secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, chief of defence staff General Anil Chauhan, army chief General Upendra Dwivedi, navy chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi and IAF chief Air Chief Marshal AP Singh. The defence secretary will introduce the General Officer Commanding (GOC), Delhi Area, Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar to the PM. The GOC will then conduct the PM to the saluting base where a combined inter-services and Delhi Police guard will present a general salute to Modi, who will inspect the Guard of Honour. Flying Officer Rashika Sharma will assist the PM in hoisting the national flag, the statement said. It will be synchronised with a 21-Gun salute by the gunners of the 1721 Field Battery (Ceremonial). The Air Force band, consisting of one junior commissioned officer and 25 other ranks, will play the national anthem during the hoisting of the flag. For the first time, 11 Agniveer Vayu musicians will be part of the band, it said. 'As soon as the national flag is hoisted by the PM, flower petals will be showered at the venue by two Mi-17 helicopters of the Indian Air Force --- one trooping the national flag and the other a flag depicting 'Operation Sindoor'.' Around 5,000 special guests will witness the celebrations at Red Fort, including the Indian contingent of Special Olympics 2025, winners of international sports events, gold medallists of Khelo India Para Games, best performing farmers trained and financially assisted under different schemes, best performing sarpanches and best performing students among others. Over 1,500 people from various states and Union Territories dressed in traditional attire have also been invited to witness the ceremony.

Cheap Russian Oil Fails To Benefit Common Indians: Oil Companies' Profits Soar 25-Fold, Govt Collects Over 40% Tax
New Delhi: India has been importing Russian crude oil at discounts ranging from 5 to 30 dollars per barrel for the past three years. According to a report by Moneylife, private companies such as Reliance and Nayara, along with state-owned firms like Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum, pocketed around 65 percent of the benefits from these discounted imports. The Indian government received the remaining 35 percent. Ordinary consumers saw little or no relief at fuel stations. Recent tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, including a 50 percent levy on India, cite India's Russian oil imports. He accused Indian refineries of processing this crude and selling refined products to Europe and other regions. India has maintained that its oil purchases are aimed at ensuring domestic energy security, regardless of the conflict in Ukraine. Petrol and diesel prices remain largely influenced by taxes. Excise duties levied by the central government in Delhi amount to Rs 21.90 per litre for petrol and Rs 17.80 per litre for diesel. State governments apply additional taxes, with Delhi charging Rs 15.40 per litre on petrol and Rs 12.83 per litre on diesel. Overall, taxes constitute over 40 percent of retail fuel prices. In April 2025, a Rs 2 hike in excise duties generated an additional Rs 32,000 crore for the central government. These funds serve as a reliable revenue source for the government, leaving consumers without any benefit from discounted Russian oil. Private refiners have also significantly profited. Reliance Industries and Nayara Energy refined substantial volumes of Russian crude, achieving refining margins of 12.5 dollars and 15.2 dollars per barrel respectively. According to data from Kepler Analytics, both companies accounted for 45 percent of India's 23.1 million barrel Russian crude imports in the first half of 2025. The crude was converted into petrol, diesel and jet fuel and exported to Europe, the United States, the UAE and Singapore, generating massive profits. India's imports from Russia began in February 2022 following Europe's sanctions. The share of Russian crude in India's imports grew from just 0.2 percent in 2021 to 35.1 percent in 2025, supplying around 1.67 million barrels per day, roughly 37 percent of the country's total requirements. Long-term contracts, such as Reliance's 10-year deal signed in December 2024 to import 500,000 barrels per day, make sudden shifts difficult. Alternative suppliers include Iraq, Saudi Arabia, the United States and other nations like Nigeria, Brazil, Guyana and the UAE. These sources are costlier than Russian oil. India strongly objected to the U.S. tariffs, calling them 'unfair, unexpected and impractical'. The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted the double standards of Western nations, emphasising that the United States and the European Union continue extensive trade with Russia in energy and raw materials. It further said that its imports of Russian crude ensure domestic energy security and are conducted transparently. Even as Russia-Ukraine conflict disrupts global energy markets, India continues to rely on Russian crude to stabilise domestic fuel prices and protect the energy needs of its 1.4 billion population. 10-year-old girl dies after ‘falling into open drain' in Gorakhpur, probe ordered
AN INQUIRY has been ordered into the death of a 10-year-old girl who drowned after falling into an open drain in Gorakhpur on Monday. The victim, Afreen, was returning home from a madrasa at the time, officials said on Wednesday. A video purportedly showing local residents pulling the girl out of the drain has surfaced on social media. The incident took place in the Ghosipurwa locality, where construction work to cover the drain and carry out other related projects is underway. Gorakhpur Mayor Dr Manglesh Kumar Srivastava said a showcause notice has been issued to the contractor who was assigned the work and the junior engineer of the municipal corporation. Additional Municipal Commissioner, Gorakhpur, Durgesh Mishra said a committee has been formed to look into the matter. He said action would be taken on the basis of its findings. According to local residents, heavy rainfall on Monday led to waterlogging on a road in the locality. In the evening, the victim, accompanied by her 12-year-old elder brother, was returning home when she accidentally fell into an open portion of the drain. The force of the current took her forward several metres before locals managed to pull her out of the water. She was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared her dead. Officials claimed that apart from a 'small uncovered portion' where the incident occurred, the rest of the drain in that area has been covered. The victim's father, Anees, earns his livelihood by operating a handcart. Sub-divisional magistrate, Gorakhpur, Deepak Kumar Gupta, said a compensation of Rs 4 lakh has been provided to the girl's family.
