YSRCP MLC Varudu Kalyani slams Andhra Pradesh govt on completion of one year, says women betrayed by NDA coalition

India Gazette10 hours ago

Vijayawada (Andhra Pradesh) [India], June 14 (ANI): Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YSRCP) Women President and MLC Varudu Kalyani slammed the NDA government in Andhra Pradesh as the coalition government completed one year of its rule in the state. She hit out at the government over safety issues, alleging failed promises, and scheme cuts.
Speaking at a round table meeting organised today to discuss the impact of one year of NDA coalition rule, YSRCP MLC Varudu Kalyani highlighted several key concerns regarding women's welfare and safety under the current government.
She stated, 'This meeting was focused on the welfare of women and the increasing atrocities against women under the NDA coalition government. Many women participants expressed their deep disappointment, saying they had trusted and voted for the coalition parties, only to be betrayed. Not a single major promise made by the current government has been fulfilled, and women's safety has been completely neglected. On average, 70 to 80 cases of atrocities against women are being reported every day in Andhra Pradesh. This alone reflects the deteriorating condition of law and order in the state.'
She further added, 'In the last one year, the coalition government hasn't even conducted a single review on women's safety. In contrast, during our YSRCP government, CM Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy gave top priority to women's safety and implemented 99 percent of the promises made to the people. Our police were deployed to protect citizens and implement welfare schemes. But today, they are being misused to frame false cases against YSRCP leaders instead of ensuring women's safety.'
Kalyani also pointed out the government's financial mismanagement: 'In just one year, the NDA coalition has borrowed Rs 1.65 lakh crore, while our government borrowed Rs 3.5 lakh crore over five years. They have already borrowed more than 50 percent of what we did in our full term.'
She concluded by saying, 'We will continue to fight against this government until they implement the promised schemes. The people, especially women, are waiting for Jagan Mohan Reddy's return to power because of the good governance he delivered.'
Criticising TDP leader Nara Lokesh, she remarked, 'When Jagan Mohan Reddy was Chief Minister, Lokesh used to oppose the education policies. But now, they've simply renamed our 'Amma Vodi' scheme as 'Talli Ki Vandanam' while failing to implement it properly for an entire year. Just before the elections, they announced financial assistance but deducted Rs 2,000 from each beneficiary. They promised Rs 15,000 but disbursed only Rs 13,000. This clearly shows their poor commitment and false promises. They should think carefully before making statements and honour what they say.' (ANI)

Popularity, policy, and impact: The Narendra Modi model after 11 years

File photo: PM Modi (Photo: ANI) By: Durgesh Upadhyay From 2014 to 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's government has undertaken several major policy decisions, developmental initiatives, and impactful global engagements. Let us reflect on some of the key highlights from these 11 years. Economic reforms and infrastructure development One of the most significant reforms was the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in 2017, establishing a unified tax regime under the concept of One Nation, One Tax. This was a revolutionary change that streamlined the taxation system and strengthened the working dynamics of businesses across the country. To boost industrial investment and position India as a global manufacturing hub, the Make in India campaign was launched. This initiative quickly gained nationwide momentum and engaged citizens across all strata. Although some criticized the execution process, its impact was widely recognized. Simultaneously, the Digital India initiative built a comprehensive digital infrastructure aimed at expanding internet access, promoting digital payments, and bringing government services online. This ambitious project transformed the way citizens interact with technology, and today, even street vendors and rickshaw pullers are commonly seen using platforms like Paytm and PhonePe. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 21st Century Skills Start with Confident Communication Planet Spark Learn More Undo In terms of infrastructure, the Modi government has significantly advanced India's core sectors. Noteworthy developments include the bullet train project, the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, and modernization of the railway network. The number of expressways in India has increased substantially, transforming national connectivity. Social welfare and public schemes On the social front, the Ujjwala Yojana provided free LPG connections to millions of underprivileged women, improving household health and hygiene. This initiative brought transformative changes to the lives of countless families. In the healthcare domain, the Ayushman Bharat scheme emerged as the world's largest government-funded health insurance program, providing free medical treatment to millions. This marked a significant step toward improving healthcare access for the underprivileged. Modi's vision has earned praise particularly for its focus on the poor, farmers, youth, and women empowerment. While political criticism is inevitable, it is clear that many of the government's schemes were designed with the common citizen at the center. A key example is the PM-KISAN Samman Nidhi, under which ₹6,000 is transferred annually to farmers' bank accounts. This scheme not only provided direct financial support but also eliminated middlemen through Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), ensuring transparency. Another landmark initiative is the Swachh Bharat Mission , under which millions of toilets were built across the country, significantly reducing open defecation and fostering a national mindset shift toward cleanliness. Foreign policy and national security India's global stature also saw a major rise under Modi's leadership. India has played an influential role in global forums such as G20, BRICS, and the QUAD. Prime Minister Modi has earned respect on the international stage, and the perception of India and Indians has notably improved worldwide. In terms of national security, India demonstrated its capability to respond decisively to threats. The 2016 surgical strike and the 2019 Balakot airstrike reflected a bold shift in defense strategy. Under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative, self-reliance in defense production has been prioritized. Indigenous manufacturing of weapons and equipment, such as the supersonic BrahMos missile now being produced in Lucknow, is a testament to this progress. Constitutional and political reforms The government has enacted several historic constitutional and political changes over the last 11 years. The most prominent was the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, which revoked Jammu & Kashmir's special status and reorganized it into two Union Territories — a move widely regarded as historic. By criminalizing triple talaq, the Modi government upheld gender equality and offered significant relief to Muslim women, a decision that sparked much discussion and praise. Another controversial but impactful move was the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), which was introduced to provide citizenship to persecuted minorities from neighboring countries. Despite the political debates it stirred, the policy marked a major shift in India's approach to citizenship. Environment, energy, and global humanitarianism In the fields of energy and the environment, the Modi government has made substantial strides. It led the establishment of the International Solar Alliance (ISA), positioning India as a global leader in renewable energy. Additionally, the widespread distribution of LED bulbs under government schemes has significantly reduced electricity consumption. During the COVID-19 pandemic, India launched the world's largest vaccination campaign, effectively managing vaccine distribution through the digital platform CoWIN. India also supplied vaccines to various countries, reflecting a commitment to global humanitarian efforts. Conclusion Over the past 11 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government has sought to redefine India's path across economic, technological, social, and global spheres. While these policies have attracted both support and criticism, it is undeniable that the Modi era has brought about a significant transformation in India's political landscape and governance style. Kamal Haasan loses temper as man gifts him a sword during Makkal Needhi Maiam meeting, cop intervenes. Watch

After a couple of busy weeks promoting his latest film, director Mani Ratnam's Thug Life, actor Kamal Haasan has resumed his duties as the founding president of the political party Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM). Recently, the Rajya Sabha MP-designate also attended a party meeting in Chennai, Tamil Nadu. Now, a video has surfaced showing the actor-politician losing his temper when a group of people presented him with a sword on stage. The incident even caused a brief commotion on the dais, prompting a police officer to intervene and bring the situation under control. Initially hesitant to accept the gift, Kamal eventually took the sheathed sword and posed with the group after their repeated appeals. However, as the scene became tense, he was seen angrily instructing one of the men to put the sword down. Meanwhile, a police officer quickly stepped in, ensuring that the weapon was set aside and the ones who brought it exited the stage. Kamal, nonetheless, became cool immediately and bid goodbye to the people with folded hands and a wide smile. This new development is significant for both DMK and MNM as Tamil Nadu gears up for the next state legislative assembly elections in 2026. Following the colossal failure of S Shankar's Indian 2 (2024), he faced another major disappointment recently with Thug Life, his first outing with Mani Ratnam in 37 years since Nayakan, bombing at the box office. Although 10 days have passed since its release, Thug Life has yet to cross the Rs 100 crore mark globally, according to industry tracker Sacnilk, hinting that it may fare even worse than Indian 2, which had managed to gross Rs 148.83 crore worldwide.

‘We just want them home': Punjab families await return of their sons amid escalating Israel-Iran tensions

Amid an open conflict between Israel and Iran, a wave of fresh anxiety has swept through three villages in Punjab. The families of Husanpreet Singh (27), Amritpal Singh (23), and Jaspal Singh (32)— who were kidnapped in Iran while attempting to migrate to Australia — are clinging to hope, even as fears grow over their safe return from a region now gripped by military chaos. Even as the families said that they trust the Indian government, which has assured them of the men's safe return, their fears have intensified with Iran now embroiled in a full-blown tension. The three men, who hail from Sangrur, Hoshiarpur, and Shaheed Bhagat Singh (SBS) Nagar, were missing for weeks after falling victim to a transnational human trafficking ring. Having paid Rs 18 lakh each to travel agents based in Hoshiarpur who had promised a legal entry to Australia, their journey was derailed in Tehran, where they were kidnapped, beaten, and held for ransom. Manpreet Singh, cousin of 27-year-old Husanpreet Singh from Dhuri who received a phone call from an Iranian number on June 3, said, 'Can't explain in words, it was such a big relief when he first called saying he is safe now. He said that the Indian authorities have rescued them and they were now being taken to the embassy.' He started calling us daily after that saying that the formalities for their return were being completed. And now, with news of fresh tension, we are very worried.' Yudhvir Singh, cousin of 23-year-old Amritpal Singh said, 'We waited through silence, torture videos, and ransom threats. Now we wait through the Israel-Iran tension. They told us then that they are now safe,' he added. Ashok Kumar, brother of Jaspal Singh from SBS Nagar, added that Jaspal had told him last week that it would take at least a week for them to return. 'But now this conflict has added a new layer. We saw the news about how Israeli forces struck multiple Iranian facilities, and how Iran has responded with attacks on Israel,' he said. He added, 'Jaspal told us that due to their prolonged stay in Tehran after the kidnapping, new travel documents are being prepared. This process has caused delays; otherwise, they would have returned by now, as they were rescued by Iranian police on the evening of June 3. It has now been 10 days since their rescue.' What began in April as a dream migration quickly turned into a nightmare. After being flown to Dubai, the three were taken to Iran under a false promise of onward flights to Australia. There they were stripped, and tortured by captors allegedly linked to a Pakistan-based human trafficking syndicate.
