Grizzlies announce hiring of Tuomas Iisalo as franchise's next head coach

Yahoo05-05-2025
The Memphis Grizzlies liked what they saw from Tuomas Iisalo in a limited sample. The team announced Iisalo as its next head coach Friday after he served in the role on an interim basis this season after Taylor Jenkins was fired.
In a statement, team president and general manager Zachary Kleiman praised Iisalo's former teams as "disciplined and tenacious" and said he expects to see those same traits carry over to Memphis.
'I have full confidence in Tuomas serving as head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies going forward,' said Grizzlies President and General Manager of Basketball Operations Zachary Z. Kleiman. 'Tuomas' teams at every level have been disciplined, tenacious and connected on both ends of the floor, consistently exceeding expectations. We look forward to the same in Memphis.'
The move makes Iisalo the first Finnish-born head coach in NBA history.
While Iisalo has a history of success as a coach, most of that experience came overseas. After playing professionally in Finland, Iisalo transitioned to coaching. He coached multiple teams in Finland, Germany and France between 2014-24.
While coaching in Germany, Iisalo won the Bundesliga coach of the year award in two straight seasons and was named the Champions League coach of the year in 2023. Iisalo also won the EuroCup coach of the year award in 2024 after winning the 2023–24 EuroCup title with Paris Basketball.
Months after that victory, Iisalo joined the Grizzlies as an assistant head coach. When the team surprisingly fired Jenkins with just nine games left in the regular season, Iisalo was elevated into the head-coaching role on an interim basis. The Grizzlies went 4-5 down the stretch and finished as the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference.
The team then made its way out of the play-in tournament. After a loss to the Golden State Warriors, the Grizzlies defeated the Dallas Mavericks to secure a spot in the playoffs. Their postseason experience ended quickly, as the team was swept by the Oklahoma City Thunder in four games.
With the move, Iisalo takes over a team in need of changes. During an end-of-season news conference, Kleiman stressed things needed to be better in Memphis, saying the team was not good enough during the 2024-25 season.
"I don't think we can look back at this series and this season and say, 'Oh, we're close,'" Kleiman said after the team was swept by the Thunder. "No, we're not."
Kleiman believes Iisalo can get the team closer to its ultimate goal. While he didn't have long to make an impact on the Grizzlies this season, his performance was enough to convince the franchise Iisalo is the right person to lead it back to prominence.

Nottingham Forest working on deal for Manchester City's Rico Lewis

Nottingham Forest are working on a deal to sign Manchester City full-back Rico Lewis. Talks are ongoing between the clubs over the finances of the potential transfer that would see the 20-year-old leave the club he has been with since he was a child. Lewis, who is capable of playing at right-back, left-back or in a defensive midfield role, made 48 appearances for City in all competitions last season, starting 37 games and recording two goals and five assists. Forest have already completed the signings of Dan Ndoye from Bologna, Igor Jesus and Jair Cunha from Botafogo, and Angus Gunn as a free agent this summer. The move for Lewis is the latest development in what has been an extremely busy week for Forest in the transfer market, which came after head coach Nuno Espirito Santo expressed his concern with what he perceived as a lack of activity in the window. Advertisement 'We are very, very far from where we should be, very far,' Nuno told Sky Sports in an interview recorded earlier this week. 'In terms of preparation, planning, squad — we are all very worried that we are playing in the most demanding league in the world and we are very far. 'The plans that we had did not come through. 'We have players here that know they will leave on loan. We have a major problem.' On Thursday, The Athletic reported that Forest had agreed to sign Manchester City's James McAtee in a package worth £30million and were in the process of agreeing a fee of £37.5m, which would represent a club record transfer, with Ipswich Town for Omari Hutchinson. Additionally, the club are in talks with Rennes for forward Arnaud Kalimuendo while Callum Hudson-Odoi is close to agreeing a new contract at the City Ground. A graduate of City's academy, Lewis made his debut for the club in August 2022 as a 17-year-old and went on to establish himself as part of the squad that won the Premier League and the Champions League that season. Lewis has made 94 appearances for City, scoring five goals and recording nine assists. He won a second league title with the side in 2023-24. City get their 2025-26 season underway with a visit to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday, while Forest host Brentford on Sunday. () Spot the pattern. 2025 College Football, Soccer Best Bets, Predictions by Chris 'The Bear' Fallica

College Football 2025 College Football, Soccer Best Bets, Predictions by Chris 'The Bear' Fallica Published Aug. 15, 2025 12:52 p.m. ET share facebook x reddit link "Bear Bets" are real wagers that Chris "The Bear" Fallica is actually making. Is there anything better in the world than fall sports? If you know me, you know how much I love football. But there's another sport I also enjoy laying wagers on: soccer. Let's dive into what I'm eyeing at the moment. Big 12 teams to make College Football Playoff I just don't see a path for there to be multiple Big 12 teams in the Playoff. The conference is so balanced from one to say eight or nine, that the likelihood is we get a glut of 9-3 and 8-4 teams. It doesn't mean the league is bad; it just means it's balanced. In projecting the Playoff, I'm seeing Clemson and Miami from the ACC, the Big 12 champ, the Group of Five representative and Notre Dame. That's five spots right there, leaving seven for the Big Ten and SEC, which seems right — and coincidentally, what the math added up to last year. PICK: Under 1.5 Big 12 teams (-135) to make CFP Tom Brady analyzes the challenges of today's college football landscape UTSA to win AAC, to reach CFP The Road Runners started slow last year, but QB Owen McCown and RB Robert Henry really got going later in the season. UTSA opens with Texas A&M and is a three-TD dog there, but if they can just hang in there, it will go a long way to establishing the public opinion of the team. The schedule is helpful as Tulane plays at home and could very easily be favored in every game after the opener at Kyle Field. UTSA is one of the rare G5 teams that can dominate at the line of scrimmage, especially on the offensive side of the ball. There's a good chance this team is in the AAC title game, and if you look around the college football landscape, I expect the MWC to take a step back this year, which potentially opens up the G5 berth to the AAC winner. ADVERTISEMENT PICK: UTSA (+500) to win AAC, to reach CFP (+1400) Manchester United Under 59.5 points United is coming off a lost year in Ruben Amorim's first season at Old Trafford, with 42 points, a -10 goal differential and a 15th-place finish in the table. They were closer to relegation than they were to a Champions League spot. United managed just 44 goals in 38 games and went hard in the transfer window to address that, bringing in Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and then Benjamin Sesko from Leipzig. But the issues are a bit deeper here than just on the field. There is a lot of off-the-pitch angst from fans and employees. After winning just seven of 19 home games last year, an opener against Arsenal could go a long way in saying things will be different this year — or just more of the same. The midfield still concerns me, as does the keeper, who has been known to let in a howler now and then. United won't be 42 points bad, but asking them to hit 60 seems like a lot. PICK: Manchester United Under 59.5 points Chris "The Bear" Fallica has covered sports for nearly three decades. While college football has been his focus, he also enjoys the NFL, Soccer, Golf, Tennis, MLB, NHL and Horse Racing, with an "occasional" wager on such events. Chris recently won the inaugural Circa Football Invitational and finished in the Top 10 of the Golden Nugget Football Contest. He's a multiple-time qualifier for the NHC Handicapping Championship. Manchester United: Benjamin Sesko completes first training session as Ruben Amorim gets double selection boost

Benjamin Sesko is in contention to make his Manchester United debut against Arsenal this weekend. The Slovenia international has joined Man Utd from Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig in a deal that, reportedly, could be worth up to £73.7million in total if all performance-related add-ons are met. Interestingly, Sesko had been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates Stadium this summer but was unveiled to the Old Trafford faithful prior to the pre-season friendly against Fiorentina on Saturday. The 22-year-old will now turn his attentions to working his way into Ruben Amorim's starting line-up for Sunday's Premier League opener against the Gunners as it's been confirmed he should be available for selection. There may be concerns over Sesko's fitness and ability to play 90 minutes at the weekend because he's not played a game since featuring as a second half substitute in Leipzig's pre-season friendly win over Toulouse at the end of July. With that said, the striker did look sharp in his first training session at Carrington on Sunday as preparations for the visit of Arsenal began. In a further double selection boost for Man United, Andre Onana and Joshua Zirkzee were back in training with the main group following their recent absence from action. Although both players travelled to the United States, neither took part in any of the pre-season fixtures as they used the time to work on their rehabilitation in order to be fit as soon as possible. Of the pair, Onana is perhaps more likely to earn an immediate recall to the starting line-up on Sunday. However, Altay Bayindir - who has deputised in the Cameroon international's absence - did produce a fine goalkeeping display against Arsenal in last season's FA Cup third round penalty shootout win.
