
Investors look to soft data for direction amid trade policy chaos

May 7 (Reuters) - Whipsawing U.S. trade policies are forcing some investors to lean more on anecdotal data to help them make decisions, as concrete official indicators become out-of-date too quickly in the rapidly changing environment.
Dramatic shifts in policy, such as U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff announcements last month, mean so-called hard indicators, including quantitative metrics like unemployment rates, job creation, retail sales and prices, are of limited use when they are released.
That is prompting investors to increasingly take cues from sentiment surveys or anecdotal "soft data", which may be more subjective but offer a more up-to-date read on conditions.
"The lack of tangible information on a real-time basis means we have to rely on what the soft data is telling us," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Cresset Capital.
He said he was preparing a client presentation based almost entirely on data about consumer sentiment, investor outlook and business confidence levels. "I can't think of too many environments that have been like this."
Trump's tariff plans, first announced on April 2 and modified, expanded and rescinded many times in the weeks since then, have shaken up business as usual on Wall Street.
While hard data on employment and consumer prices suggest the economy remains resilient, soft data paints a different picture on consumer confidence and the level of business activity in both services and manufacturing.
Investors look at both data sources, although in times of pronounced uncertainty tilt in favor of soft data.
"It's all about the soft data: if consumers aren't feeling good, they won't spend and then the economy will suffer," said Jason Britton, chief investment officer of Reflection Asset Management, adding that consumer sentiment surveys are published "in nearly real time" rather than with a lag.
"If you want to know what the future might look like, then you want to look at the soft data," agreed Malcolm Polley, chief investment strategist for Stratos Investment Management. But he added, "don't pay attention to it in a vacuum or it just becomes noise."
PLAYING CATCHUP
Signals sent by hard and soft data can diverge and sometimes fail to paint an accurate picture of what lies ahead. In 2022, when consumer sentiment surveys showed plunging confidence, forecasts of a recession abounded.
But a tight labor market and stronger household balance sheets meant consumers kept spending and no recession materialized.
Liz Ann Sonders, chief investment strategist at Charles Schwab, expects the hard data this time around to confirm the worsening in conditions but notes there will be a lot of noise to cut through.
"We're going to see a lot of funky data that you're going to have to go through with a fine-tooth comb," she said.
Some market participants are seeking soft data beyond traditional surveys.
"During times of uncertainty like this, every event or data point has a very large influence on prices and causes volatility," said Campbell Harvey, a professor of finance at Duke University's Fuqua School of Business. "So that's why you need to go above and beyond" in the pursuit of new data inputs.
Harvey is paying more attention to alternative indicators, such as those offered by Polymarket, a blockchain-backed prediction market.
Polymarket users wager on everything from the likelihood of a recession to the price of eggs. Harvey says these are worth heeding because believes such bets are made by people based on their conversations with business partners, suppliers and customers.
Mike Reynolds, vice president of investment research at Glenmede, is considering new metrics, such as the number of overseas travelers visiting the United States, as he tries to gauge the tariff fallout.
In March, foreign spending on travel to the United States fell by $1.3 billion, the Commerce Department's Bureau of Economic Analysis said on Tuesday, the largest such decline since the pandemic.
"We do think that we need to change our approach and get creative in our approach to data to get any insight into what's happening," Reynolds said. "We want to look at anything that will give us an edge, because in this uncertainty doing anything -- or nothing -- is risky."
GETTING IT RIGHT
To be sure, some still prefer hard data.
"I was in the investment business 35 years and I learned to ignore the survey data and look at the actual data," said Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent during a press conference last week.
Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell said in April the bank was "closely watching this tension between the hard and soft data." The Fed announces its rate decision on Wednesday.
Some warn against over-reliance on soft data.
"Surveys pick up more feeling rather than action (so) they might not correspond to economic activity to the same extent that hard data do," said Jan Hatzius, chief economist at Goldman Sachs in an interview.
Soft data is also more likely send out false alarms, as happened in 2022, Hatzius added.
"Many people said, this is the recession," he said. "We didn't."

Costco rolls out new perk to help shoppers beat crowds… but there's a catch
Costco is introducing a new perk that will allow certain members to have their own private shopping hours. Executive tier members will be able to shop for an hour earlier than regular Gold Star members from June 30. The big box retailer will now allow its top tier members, who pay $130 a year, to shop from 9am to 10am on weekdays and Sundays, and 9am to 9:30am on Saturdays. 'Our Executive Members are our most loyal members, and we want to reward them for their commitment to Costco,' the company told employees in an email seen by Business Insider. The retail giant said that the top tier members would also start receiving a $10 monthly credit for Instacart orders, as well as $150 worth of other benefits and savings on Costco services. Around half of Costco shoppers have Executive level memberships, but they account for 73 percent of sales, according to the company. The top level also offers a 2 percent rebate on all Costco purchases made that year up to a total of $750. Costco hopes the new shopping hours will reduce traffic in car parks and lines at checkouts, which is a key customer complaint. However, it is also a move that could boost membership fee revenue, a key driver of Costco's bottom line. Last year Costco brought in more than $4 billion a year from membership fees alone, after upping its rates in September. As well as access to discounted groceries and electronics, Costco membership also gives shoppers access to services such as hearing tests and home insurance. It is not yet clear whether the new shopping times will include these extra services. It comes after Costco also expanded its gas station hours and added more pumps. The retailer's gas stations are now open from 6am until 10pm on weekdays. On Saturday and Sunday, Costco gas stations now open at 6am and close at 8:30pm and 7:30pm, respectively. The wholesale giant originally closed it 60 gas stations at 9pm but decided to extend its hours further, much to the delight of its loyal customers. Costco members are delighted that gas stations are now open an hour later Costco has built a reputation for consistently offering gas prices below market averages, leading to the familiar sight of vehicle queues at Costco pumps across the country. Fuel sales made up around 12 percent of the Costco's total sales last year, and its cheap gas and accessible stations are a key incentive for memberships. Costco hiked its membership rates back in September last year, taking its standard Gold level membership from $60 to $65 and its Executive level by $10 to $130 a year. It was the first time the retailer had upped its membership fees since June 2017. The retail giant currently has around 52 million members in the US and Canada.

World Bank sharply downgrades forecast for global economic growth to 2.3%
Citing 'a substantial rise in trade barriers' but without mentioning Mr Trump by name, the 189-country lender predicted that the US economy – the world's largest – would grow half as fast (1.4%) this year as it did in 2024 (2.8%). That marks a downgrade from the 2.3% US growth it had forecast back for 2025 back in January. The bank also lopped 0.4 percentage points off its forecast for global growth this year. It now expects the world economy to expand just 2.3% in 2025, down from 2.8% in 2024. In a forward to the latest version of the twice-yearly Global Economic Prospects report, World Bank chief economist Indermit Gill wrote that the global economy has missed its chance for the 'soft landing' – slowing enough to tame inflation without generating serious pain – it appeared headed for just six months ago. 'The world economy today is once more running into turbulence,' Mr Gill wrote. 'Without a swift course correction, the harm to living standards could be deep.'

Airbnb is spending $1million on NYC mayoral race hoping it can return to the city with fewer restrictions
Airbnb 's super PAC has spent $1 million on a commercial attacking three candidates for New York mayor who do not support short-term rentals in the city. The ad, put out online on Monday, singles out Democrats Zohran Mamdani, Scott Stringer and Brad Lander, accusing them of ignoring 'common sense solutions' to making New York more affordable. 'It's hard out here – to make rent, buy groceries and raise kids. And New Yorkers know, the wrong mayor will just make it worse,' the voiceover states. 'So what about Zohran Mamdani, Scott Stringer and Brad Lander? Their policies will make New York even more expensive. And they oppose common sense solutions that would make our city more affordable. 'So much is hard. But this choice is easy. New Yorkers can't afford a mayor who makes New York more expensive.' The commercial is paid for by Affordable New York – a political action committee associated with Airbnb. The group was the first PAC to start spending on New York City's 2025 primary elections, back in March. An attack on the three candidates means that their rival Democratic candidate and former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, has support from two sides of the city's hospitality industry – having already been backed by the Hotel and Gaming Trades Council. Airbnb has been sidelined in New York City, due to a state law that prohibits rentals for fewer than 30 days while the host is not present. The city doubled down in 2022, with the introduction of Local Law 18. LL18 requires short-term rental hosts to register with the Mayor's Office of Special Enforcement, and prohibits the company, and others, from booking service platforms from processing transactions for unregistered short-term rentals. The law resulted in an over 90 percent drop in Airbnb listings across New York City following its implementation in September 2023, according to the company. It comes as the race for the Democratic primary for New York City mayor – taking place on June 24 – narrows to an almost two-person race between Cuomo and Mamdani. A survey conducted by Data for Progress by a super PAC backing Mamdani found that Cuomo was ahead by only two points, while a poll from Cuomo's camp came back with a 12-point lead. The Democratic candidates faced off in their first televised debate on June 4, with Cuomo coming under repeated attack from his rivals. Cuomo's governorship ended acrimoniously after 10 years with his resignation in 2021, following investigations into allegations of sexual harassment. He has denied any wrongdoing. Mamdani is considered a favorite among progressives in the party, having won the backing of Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez following the debate. "Assemblymember Mamdani has demonstrated a real ability on the ground to put together a coalition of working-class New Yorkers that is strongest to lead the pack. In the final stretch of the race, we need to get very real about that," Ocasio-Cortez told The New York Times. They are among the names vying to replace beleaguered New York mayor Eric Adams, who announced he was running as an independent, not a Democrat, amid ongoing accusations of corruption and a political storm over an alleged quid pro quo with President Donald Trump to avoid criminal charges. Adams insists he has done nothing wrong. Eleven Democrats are running, one Republican – Curtis Sliwa, founder of the Guardian Angels and a longtime anti-crime activist – and two independent candidates, Jim Walden, and Adams himself.
