Incoming Penn State basketball star named New York's Gatorade Player of the Year
Times may have been tough for the Penn State men's basketball program, but the future still has some glimmers of hope despite falling short of playing in a postseason tournament this season. The roster will be injecting some new life into it with the incoming recruiting class, which is now highlighted by New York's Gatorade Player of the Year.
Kayden Mingo was named the Gatorade Player of the Year in New York on Thursday. Mingo is currently averaging 13.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game for Long Island Lutheran, one of the top basketball programs in the state. Mingo and Long Island Lutheran are currently preparing for postseason basketball tournaments.
Mingo is the highest-rated recruit to commit to Penn State in program history. Mingo committed to the Nittany Lions in November 2024. The commitment was a major recruiting victory for head coach Mike Rhoades, who is putting together his first recruiting class in a full basketball recruiting cycle since his arrival at Penn State.
Mingo will likely carry the torch from Ace Baldwin Jr., the first key addition to the roster for Rhoades via the transfer portal from VCU. Mingo could very well step into a key role on the court next season as Penn State looks to establish a foundation of sustained success.

Former Oregon coach Aaron Feld parts ways with Mario Cristobal and Miami Miami is about to have more "smedium" shirts on the shelves. Known for shirts that don't quite fit and a handlebar mustache, strength and conditioning coach Aaron Feld was quite the character when he was with Mario Cristobal at Oregon and then Miami. But that relationship has come to an end. Feld announced via his Instagram account that he will be leaving his position at Miami in order to spend more time with his family. "This was a tough decision to have to make, but ultimately the choice was clear," Feld said. "At the end of the day, my wife and kids deserved more from me than the circumstances allowed, so the only course of action was to change my circumstances. Failing as a husband and a father will never be an option." Feld was one of the more visible strength and conditioning coaches out there. Besides his attire and facial hair, Feld could often be seen on the sidelines rallying the troops or pulling Cristobal off the field during play. During his time at Oregon, Feld was instrumental in building up the Ducks' offensive line group. It was thought that Oregon's line was more on the smaller side, which hurt them against programs in the Big Ten and SEC. But that began to change under Feld and then continued when Dan Lanning arrived. Oregon Ducks wide receiver Evan Stewart breaks silence on knee injury Oregon Duck fans got the unfortunate news earlier this week that one of their best players, senior wide receiver Evan Stewart, suffered a severe knee injury last week while going through some offseason training and would miss the majority of the upcoming season for the Ducks. Stewart was projected to be the No. 1 receiving option for the Ducks this year, having caught 48 passes for 613 yards and five touchdowns a year ago. Without his production and veteran experience on the field, Oregon's WR room got even younger. This is a devastating blow for the Ducks, who are already replacing Tez Johnson and Traeshon Holden from the 2024 team and looking to a number of young and unproven players to step into significant roles. Over the weekend, Stewart took to social media for the first time and posted a photo on his Instagram story with a caption thanking fans for their well-wishes. "Thank you for all the well wishes. I'm on the road to recovery. Don't put a timeline on me. Following God's Plan! Thank you for the Prayers! - 7," posted Stewart. The part about not putting a timeline on his injury is what could turn some heads for Oregon fans. With a tear in his patellar tendon, the recovery could vary, depending on the severity. In some cases, rehab can take as little as three months, but there are some injuries that need up to a year to fully rehab. Either way, it will be interesting to see what Stewart chooses to do with his future. He has a redshirt year available to him, and can use this year to get back to full strength and return to the team in 2026. With another strong season, he is expected to be one of the top receivers in the NFL draft, whichever year he chooses to declare himself eligible.
