Private Harry and Briasa began their trek to the $20 million The Everest with equally impressive barrier trial efforts on Monday.
The Nathan Doyle -trained Private Harry monstered his rivals in a 1000m heat at Gosford, racing clear from the turn to win by more than four lengths under a 'stranglehold'' by jockey Ashley Morgan.
Then a few minutes later at Canterbury, Team Hawkes ' stable star Briasa contested a Group trial over 900m and led throughout under Zac Lloyd to win with his ears pricked by one-and-a-half lengths.

Both outstanding sprinters were having their first barrier trial hit-outs of the new season and demonstrated why they are so high in betting for The Everest at Royal Randwick on October 18 – Private Harry is second favourite at $6 and Briasa next at $8 behind Hong Kong champion Ka Ying Rising ($1.80 favourite).
Although unbeaten Private Harry's Gosford trials rivals were only moderate, the four-year-old's speed, acceleration and sheer class were obvious.
'Ash (Morgan, jockey) was speechless, he couldn't believe how good Private Harry horse felt,'' Sean Driver, of part-owner Kurrinda Bloodstock, said.
'The horse was in second gear through the trial, he has come back better.''
"Private Harry coasts down to the line under his own steam."

Private Harry, winner of his five starts including the Group 1 The Galaxy last autumn, is due to have another barrier trial before his likely return to racing in the Group 2 $1 million The Shorts (1100m) at Royal Randwick on September 20.
'Nathan plans to give Private Harry another trial in two weeks in Sydney and then the horse will have an exhibition gallop before going first-up in The Shorts,'' Driver added.
Global racing and breeding giant Yulong purchased a half-share in Private Harry earlier this year and has selected the sprinter to run in its Everest slot.
The 'Grey Flash' Briasa is at the same stage of his preparation as Private Harry and also looked in great order as he dominated his Canterbury trial, easily defeating a classy line-up with stablemate Airman working home nicely for second ahead of promising three-year-olds Rivellino and North England.

Briasa has won seven of his 10 starts including the Group 1 TJ Smith Stakes last autumn and has been picked up for The Everest by slot-holders Max Whitby, Neil Werrett, Col Madden and Steve McCann.
Ka Ying Rising (Hong Kong Jockey Club) and Jimmysstar (TAB) are the only other sprinters with confirmed slots for the 12-horse Everest field.

Champion thoroughbred trainer John Hawkes to be trackside at Menangle for the TAB Eureka

CHAMPION trainer John Hawkes prefers to watch his stars in Group 1 races from home these days, but he will be trackside at Menangle on September 6. Hawkes, who has long held a passionate harness racing hobby, will have a runner in the world’s richest harness race, the $2.1 TAB Eureka, at Menangle. His exciting three-year-old, Seathestars, on Thursday landed one of the few remaining slots in the TAB Eureka, that of Cordina Racing. It gives Hawkes the historic achievement of having runners in the two richest races of both Australian horse racing codes in coming weeks. His star sprinter Briasa already had a slot in the $20 million TAB Everest at Randwick on October 18. “Wouldn’t it be something to win them both,â€ Hawkes laughed. “It’s a big thrill to get Seathestars into the Eureka. “The thoroughbreds are work, but I’ve loved the trots since I was a kid back in Adelaide and had shares in quite a few over the years with mates. “There’s a few of my oldest mates in this horse. My wife (Jenny) and I will get along to Menangle on the night with a few of our friends and to fill a table or two. “It’s easier to watch my (thoroughbred) horses race from home these days, but I’ll definitely head out to Menangle for this guy.â€ Hawkes expects Seathestars, a three-year-old with six wins and eight placings from just 18 starts, to be competitive, especially if he lands a good barrier. “He’s just kept improving with each run, especially this campaign. Geoff (Webster, trainer) has done a great job with him,â€ he said. “I’m sure he’ll be better again next year, but the three-year-olds do get a preferential (barrier) draw and with the right run, I’m sure he can be right in the finish.â€ Hawkes is also a fan of young driver Will Rixon, who has driven Seathestars six times for two wins, two seconds, two thirds and a fourth. “He’s really clicked with the horse. He looks like a star in the making, young Will,â€ he said. Daniel Cordina, of Cordina Racing, said landing Seathestars for his slot was a thrill and also a coup for harness racing. “If we can help promote the game with our slot, then we’re all for it,â€ he said. “And with Seathestars, we can bring that thoroughbred connection and some great PR for the sport. “He’s a horse on the way up at the right time. He won really well at Menangle last start and I think he’s good enough to win it with the right run.â€ Webster, one of Australia’s most decorated horsemen, is a long time friend of John Hawkes and has trained the vast majority of his harness horses. “This is just fantastic. I had Cobber signed and in a slot for the first Eureka (2023), but he went amiss just days before it,â€ he said. “To be back two years later, especially teaming up with Hawkesy and his crew, who have been big supporters of mine, is really special. “Don’t sell this horse short. He’s even better than I thought he was on what he’s done at his past few runs. He can win.â€ · Adam Hamilton is a paid contributor writing on harness racing for News Corp.

Trainer Clayton Douglas unlikely to target The Everest with Giga Kick

Giga Kick is unlikely to have a third crack at The Everest this spring with trainer Clayton Douglas preferring to negotiate one hurdle at a time. Giga Kick posted an amazing win in the 2022 edition of The Everest to complete a five-race winning streak to start his career before returning in the autumn of 2023 to win the Group 1 All Aged Stakes and Doomben 10,000. • PUNT LIKE A PRO: Become a Racenet iQ member and get expert tips – with fully transparent return on investment statistics – from Racenet's team of professional punters at our Pro Tips section. SUBSCRIBE NOW! But, surprisingly, Giga Kick hasn't won a race since. An injury derailed his 2023 spring before he went down narrowly to Bella Nipotina in last year's Everest. Giga Kick ran second in the Group 1 Goodwood in Adelaide in May but finished three lengths from classy mare Joliestar at his last run in the Group 1 Kingsford Smith Cup at his last run in June. • She's Bulletproof must prove Group 1 credentials in Caulfield return Douglas said Giga Kick's recovery from his latest Queensland trip delayed his start to the spring. 'He was a bit flat after his last run in Queensland so we haven't got up him at this stage,' Douglas said. 'Therefore, it's more than likely he won't be going to The Everest this year. Giga Kick has not won a race since claiming the Kingsford Smith Stakes in Queensland in 2023. Picture: Racing Photos via Getty Images 'He'll potentially just have a Melbourne spring but you never know. 'He's six now so he's not getting any younger and he hasn't won a race since he was three.' • Oak Hill targets Carlyon Stakes after unbeaten Lindsay Park start Douglas said Giga Kick hasn't reached the galloping stage but he would ramp up the gelding's work leading up to a possible return in a Group 2 race during the Caulfield Cup carnival. 'There's potentially a race like the Schillaci for him first-up,' Douglas said. 'We're just going to poke along with him. 'He's a star horse but I'd love to see him get back to his best form and winning races. 'The 1100(m) should be good for him first-up.' Douglas hadn't locked in Giga Kick's spring program but noted he had many options for the winner of more than $12.8m over the next three months. 'What he's done is what he's done and he's been a star of the sport but there's so many sprint races around,' Douglas said.
