Coastal Carolina AD Chance Miller: Kevin Schnall ejection 'drastically altered' game

USA Today23-06-2025
Coastal Carolina athletic director Chance Miller shared his thoughts on Kevin Schnall's ejection against LSU in Game 2 of the College World Series championship series on June 22, claiming the move "drastically altered the trajectory" of the game.
"The ejections of head coach Kevin Schnall and assistant coach Matt Schilling in the bottom of the first inning drastically altered the trajectory of a must-win game for our team," Miller shared on X (formerly Twitter), hours after Coastal Carolina's 5-3 loss. "These decisions were made with an alarming level of haste, without an attempt at de-escalation, and deprived our student-athletes of the leadership they have relied on throughout a historic postseason run."
Miller didn't hold back his thoughts on the situation, which saw Schnall and Schilling ejected from the game in the bottom of the first inning after Schnall argued balls and strikes. Schnall also let his thoughts be known in his postgame press conference after the Game 2 loss.
"This is not about a single call — it's about process and professionalism," Miller continued. "In the biggest moment of the college baseball season, our program and its student-athletes deserved better. The NCAA must re-evaluate how it trains, assigns, and reviews umpires in championship environments. We expect consistency, communication, and the same level of excellence from officials that we demand of our teams.
"Our players have represented this university, this conference, and college baseball with integrity and heart, and they deserved the opportunity to compete for a national championship with their leaders and we were denied that opportunity today."
The Chanticleers entered the national championship series with a 26-game win streak, which was broken after falling to LSU 1-0 in Game 1 of the series on June 21. Coastal Carolina looked to force a winner-take-all Game 3 on June 23, but fell again in Game 2.
Coastal Carolina made its second-ever College World Series appearance in 2025, reaching the CWS finals for the second time in as many tries. The Chanticleers won the championship in 2016m when Schnall was an assistant coach under Gary Gilmore.
Schnall's ejection was controversial to many fans and analysts, including the ESPN broadcast crew, and Coastal Carolina's athletic director echoed that sentiment in his statement.

DJ Pickett may not be the only LSU football freshman making an impact on defense

LSU football cornerback DJ Pickett will make an immediate impact in 2025. The five-star freshman was one of LSU's most talented defenders the moment he arrived on campus. But he's not the only freshman with a chance to see the field. LSU safety CJ Jimcoily could eventually earn a spot in the rotation, too. Jimcoily was a three-star in the finals Rivals Industry Rankings of 2025 -- not the exact profile of a guy who plays right away in the SEC. But Jimcoily's strong early impression, along with LSU's depth concerns at safety, could work in Jimcoily's favor. Jimcoily is playing the STAR position in Blake Baker's defense. Harold Perkins has a strong grip on the starting spot, but down the depth chart, it's wide open. While the Industry Rankings had Jimcoily as a three-star, Rivals was high on Jimcoliy, ranking the Nashville product as a four-star and No. 13 at his position. At 6-foot-3, Jimcoily has the size you want in a safety/linebacker hybrid. It's exactly what Baker is looking for at the STAR spot. I wouldn't expect Jimcoily to play a lot, or even at all, early. But as LSU enters the stretch and depth is tested, LSU might need the freshman. LSU wasn't afraid to rely on true freshman defenders in 2024. If a guy is ready, Brian Kelly and Baker will put them on the field. Jimcoily could be playing a role when games matter in November.

LSU football coordinator says veteran wide receiver can take LSU's offense to next level

LSU football needs to up its explosive play rate in 2025. LSU ranked No. 25 nationally with 431.5 yards, but not much of that yardage came from the big play. LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier was effective in the quick game and intermediate areas, but LSU lacked the personnel to push the ball down the field. LSU's lack of a run game played a part but LSU didn't have the speed on the outside to run by defensive backs. Chris Hilton does, though. Hilton finally got back to full health in LSU's final two games of 2024 and it added another element to LSU's offense. Hilton combined for 218 yards and three touchdowns vs. Oklahoma and Baylor and LSU's passing game looked like a complete product. Hilton is gearing up for year five at LSU. And with an offseason of good health, a true breakout year could be in store. Hilton i entering year five at LSU. After a healthy offseason, Hilton is staring at a career year. LSU offensive coordinator Joe Sloan is ready to see Hilton's full impact. "I think you can look at the last couple games last year, our ability to attack vertically really changes when he's out there," Sloan said. Hilton averages 21.2 yards per catch in his career at LSU. Even when the consistency hasn't been there, the big play potential has. "Being able to push the ball down the field is a huge thing. Chris has been consistent. I think he has a great attitude, great body language and is attacking every day," Sloan said. Hilton signed with LSU in 2021 -- the same class as Nussmeier. Ed Orgeron was still head coach when Hilton signed his letter of intent. Hilton was a four-star recruit and No. 79-ranked player in the class. He's talented, but injuries have prevented Hilton from being a top contributor on a weekly basis. "He's going to play really good football. I've been excited for him. I know he's been through a lot," Sloan said. LSU's offense needs to take another step if it hopes to reach the College Football Playoff. The Tigers can't do that without an explosive passing game. "When safeties come down, we need to be able to push the ball down the field. And Chris absolutely helps us. Because ultimately it's about scoring points. It's not just about yards, right? Yards is one thing. But we've got to score points. And that comes from, you know, explosive – a lot of times it comes from explosive play touchdowns. And he definitely gives us the opportunity to do that," Sloan said.

Regardless of which QB starts for Notre Dame, you have to trust Mike Denbrock's decision

Year 2 has always proved to be the best for offenses under Mike Denbrock, we will see the same this year for the Irish. ☘️History of rankings for each team Denbrock was an OC for points per game, yards per play, and effiency (BD = Before Denbrock) When Notre Dame lured LSU offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock to South Bend, it was seen as a major win for head coach Marcus Freeman and his program. The consensus is that he is one of the best offensive gurus in the country, if not the best, and has a tough decision ahead of him with CJ Carr and Kenny Minchey. The most recent rumors have trended to the 'older' Minchey, but as of today, no starter has been announced. This isn't the first time he's entered a season with a question mark surrounding the position, as in 2022 with the Tigers, Denbrock had to make a choice between Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier. It's pretty safe to say that he made the right choice, as Daniels had a massive season and ultimately won the Heisman Trophy before going to the Washington Commanders as the No. 2 overall pick of the 2024 NFL draft. That decision alone should give Notre Dame fans plenty of trust in who Denbrock will choose. There are plenty of pro's and con's for both Carr and Minchey, but the Irish's offensive coordinator has shown that the choice is in very good hands.
