Ahmad Zahid leads Malaysian delegation to meeting in Geneva
KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi is leading Malaysia's delegation to the Eighth Session of the Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) in Geneva on June 4 and 5.
The Foreign Ministry (MOFA), in a statement today, said Ahmad Zahid is accompanied by senior officials from MOFA, the Deputy Prime Minister's Office and the National Disaster Management Agency.
'The Deputy Prime Minister is scheduled to deliver Malaysia's National Statement at the eighth GPDRR. He will be speaking at a ministerial roundtable session on the topic of 'Safe Schools Now: Protecting Every Child from Disaster and Climate Risk'.
'The Deputy Prime Minister will reiterate Malaysia's continued commitment to disaster management through the launch of the National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy, the implementation of the Safe School Programme and the Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction Programme as well as through the introduction of a Disaster Risk Reduction education programme,' it said.
While in Geneva, Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Rural and Regional Development Minister, is also scheduled to meet the United Nations Assistant Secretary-General and Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction, Kamal Kishore.
'The meeting is aimed at exploring potential areas of collaboration between Malaysia and international partners on disaster risk management,' according to the statement.
The GPDRR is a platform for assessing progress made by United Nations member states on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction 2015-2030.
Malaysia is a pioneer member of this network and remains unwavering in its commitment to managing and pre-empting disasters in line with the 2030 National Disaster Risk Reduction Policy.

'We also agreed to intensify joint exercises and field training, including rescue operations and emergency simulations, which were recently conducted. 'These trainings not only foster trust between agencies but are also essential in coordinating operating procedures in the event of cross-border disasters,' he said. Ahmad Zahid, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said Malaysia and Brunei had proven that close neighbourly ties, combined with strong commitment, could build more robust regional cooperation in disaster and security matters. In a Facebook post, Ahmad Zahid said the celebration highlights the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) and his son, Prophet Ismail (AS), two individuals who are symbols of unwavering obedience and sacrifice to Allah SWT. 'May the spirit of sacrifice continue to be a guiding principle in every aspect of our struggle, whether in the family, society and also in developing this beloved country,' he said. North Korea internet hit by a major outage, analyst says
SEOUL: North Korea's internet is experiencing a major outage on Saturday (June 7), said a UK-based researcher, adding that the cause may be may be internal rather than a cyberattack. North Korea's main news web sites and its Foreign Ministry internet site were inaccessible on Saturday morning, according to checks by Reuters. "A major outage is currently occurring on North Korea's internet - affecting all routes whether they come in via China or Russia," said Junade Ali, a UK-based researcher who monitors the North Korean internet. North Korea's entire internet infrastructure is not showing up on systems that can monitor internet activities, he said. "Hard to say if this is intentional or accidental - but seems like this is internal rather than an attack," he said. Officials at South Korea's Police cyber terror response centre which monitors North Korea's cyber activities could not be reached for comment. - Reuters
