'No RM10k in savings by 30? Something's wrong' — Viral post ignites backlash

A bold social media post has gone viral, stirring intense debate over financial expectations among Malaysians in their 30s. The post bluntly called out working adults who have yet to save RM10,000, saying it's a sign that 'something is wrong.' ALSO READ: Wife recovers over RM10,000 in coins from bathroom door thanks to husband's habit The user called shaunlsm wrote: 'If you're already 30 and still don't have RM10k in savings, something's not right — not to judge, but let's be honest: you've been working for years, yet you're still living like it's day one.' The no-filter statement split netizens down the middle — with some calling it a harsh but necessary truth, and others slamming it as disconnected from economic realities. Supporters said it's a wake-up call for better money habits. 'Finances can be tough sometimes, but I believe that if someone really wants to save, they'll find a way — just like how they always seem to find a way to spend on lifestyle upgrades,' ishraflatifah echoed. But many clapped back, highlighting the struggles faced by the average Malaysian. Critics pointed to rising living costs, stagnant wages, student loans, and family responsibilities as barriers to savings. Some also said the post unfairly shames those who are already trying their best. Instead of blanket statements, others called for more empathetic and realistic conversations about money. 'Having savings is a luxury not everyone can afford,' kwavemy wrote. 'You think savings are just about discipline? Try feeding a family, paying bills, outstanding debts, covering siblings' studies, all on a paycheck that barely stretches to month-end. Savings are a luxury for many, not a sign of failure. Check your privilege before making blanket statements,' aynynsofeaa voiced.

Selangor's PLATS programme records RM10mil in sales

KLANG: The Platform Selangor (PLATS) initiative, a digital entrepreneurship ecosystem spearheaded by the Selangor government, has recorded cumulative sales exceeding RM10 million. Ahmad Azri Zainal Nor, Head of the Menteri Besar Selangor Incorporated (MBI) Foundation, said the figure reflects the success of various initiatives under the programme. "Based on our data, the Agrobank PLATS Ramadan Bazaar alone generated around RM8 million in sales," he told a press conference yesterday. "Additionally, data from the point-of-sale device system provided to our entrepreneurs shows nearly RM3 million in transactions." To date, 88,000 entrepreneurs have joined PLATS, edging closer to the target of 100,000 set by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari. The programme primarily supports micro-entrepreneurs, including hawkers and small retailers, particularly in the food and beverage and service sectors. Ahmad Azri added that the foundation is collaborating with the Selangor State Development Corporation (PKNS) to help entrepreneurs expand into international markets. "We'll be heading to Shanghai this November to explore opportunities for marketing our products there, as well as in the Middle East," he said. - BERNAMA

RM13 million agriculture, livestock projects launched to boost food security

Arthur (centre) with the MoU signatories. KOTA KINABALU (Aug 1): The signing of three Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) between various parties here today marks the launch of agriculture and livestock projects worth RM13 million, aimed at enhancing sector growth and strengthening the country's food security. The first MoU, between the Farmers' Organization Authority (LPP) and Desa Keningau Livestock Industries Sdn Bhd (DKLI), involves a project to boost local grain corn production through a corporate approach and transfer of technology (ToT). Under the five-year partnership, LPP will provide land development and machinery support using a matching grant of RM3 million, while DKLI will oversee planting, planning and implementation. The second MoU, between the Keningau Area Farmers' Organisation (PPK) and Absolute Moringa Sdn Bhd, focuses on a RM10 million agricultural input marketing initiative. This collaboration aims to enhance PPK's services in Sabah by supplying higher-quality agricultural inputs to increase yields and improve business operations. Meanwhile, the third MoU was signed between LPP and Sawit Kinabalu Farm Products Sdn Bhd (SKFP) for a ToT-based integrated cattle breeding project. SKFP will serve as a reference model and provide technical expertise, while LPP coordinates implementation at the Farmers' Organization level. Deputy Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup, who witnessed the exchange, said the initiatives would reduce Malaysia's dependence on imported products such as grain corn. He said the projects are expected to expand accessibility for breeders and lower food prices, especially for livestock. 'This collaboration between the government and private sector is crucial to ensure the economic benefits reach local communities,' he said. Arthur also praised the initiative for supporting Malaysia's target of achieving 50 percent self-sufficiency in the ruminant industry by 2030, up from the current 16 percent.
