Popular rapper Eminem sues Facebook-parent Meta for $109 million, here's why

Eminem takes Mark Zuckerberg's Meta to court.
Grammy-winning rapper Eminem has filed a lawsuit of $109 million against Facebook-parent Meta accusing it of copyright infringement. The lawsuit, filed by Eminem's music publishing company, Eight Mile Style, accuses Meta of the "unauthorised storage, reproduction, and exploitation" of 243 of Eminem's songs across its platforms. As per the court documents seen by People,
Eight Mile Style
alleges that Meta's in-app features, such as "Original Audio" and "Reels Remix," have actively encouraged and allowed users to incorporate Eminem's music into their video content without proper licensing or attribution. The lawsuit further claims that this has led to rapper's songs being used in millions of videos and streamed billions of times, resulting in diminished value of the copyrights and lost profits for the publisher.
Eminem vs Meta: Unauthorised use of music
As reported by People, the lawsuit alleges that Meta has allowed its users to store, reproduce and exploit Eminem's songs through features like Original Audio and Reels Remix, which enable users to incorporate music into their content without proper attribution or licensing.
Eight Mile Style is seeking statutory damages of $150,000 per song, per platform (Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp), which could accumulate to the total sum exceeding $109 million. The publisher has also requested a jury trial and a permanent injunction to prevent Meta from future unauthorised use of Eminem's music.
What Meta said on the lawsuit

spokesperson told People that the company has licenses with thousands of partners around the world and the company has also been negotiating with Eight Mile Style. 'Meta has licenses with thousands of partners around the world and an extensive global licensing program for music on its platforms. Meta had been negotiating in good faith with Eight Mile Style, but rather than continue those discussions, Eight Mile Style chose to sue,' said Meta spokesperson.

Mamata Banerjee fears skeletons may tumble out with The Bengal Files: Vivek Agnihotri

Director Vivek Agnihotri claimed his film 'The Bengal Files' has hurt West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee because she fears it may expose skeletons from the past. In an exclusive interview with the filmmaker expressed his dissent over the way the trailer launch of the film was halted and eventually cancelled in Kolkata last said he is presenting the "untold story" of Bengal's history, which may have upset the Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress. When asked why the Trinamool was vehemently opposed to 'The Bengal Files', the director said, "She (Mamata Banerjee) doesn't want history to come out because when history comes out, lots of other skeletons will also pop out of the box - and some skeletons maybe of their family. Bad skeletons, not good skeletons."advertisementBanerjee, however, is widely seen as having built an independent political career. She was born into a non-political family. Her father, Promileswar Banerjee, was an independence activist but not a politician with dynastic influence. She rose through student politics, joined the Congress party in the 1970s, and later founded the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in 1998. For Agnihotri, the CM weaponised the state power against him during the trailer launch event. He said, "When they cancelled the trailer launch, the state misused its power. They weaponised police to stop the trailer. But you know what? It's just a trailer -picture abhi baaki hai. Let's see what happens when the film releases on September 5. I pray to God that they are given some good sense."The National Award-winning filmmaker called the criticism of his film a denial of the rights of the people of West Bengal. "They understand that by attacking the film, they are denying the rights of millions of Bengalis, whose prestige, glory, heritage and great history are represented in the film. I think the biggest crime in this world is to suppress the expression of a person who has been hurt. The state government is doing that crime," he highlighted that the authorities in West Bengal seem particularly hurt by the film's claim of telling an "untold story".He shared, "I fail to understand what has hurt them, really. Are the Hindus not citizens of Bengal? I've been told by reliable sources that when the trailer launch was cancelled and the police came - those people who were actually stopping it told me in confidence later that their major problem is that it (the film) tells the 'untold story' of Hindu genocide. As if it didn't happen - the Direct Action Day."Agnihotri claimed that 'The Bengal Files' features the persecution of Hindus in Bengal in 1946. He further said Kolkata is running on 'gundaraj (rule of goons)', not film, which has been cleared by the censor board, presents the events of the Great Calcutta Killings-Direct Action Day and the Noakhali riots, which eventually led to the partition of Bengal into West Bengal and Bangladesh.'The Bengal Files' also stars Anupam Kher, Mithun Chakraborty, Pallavi Joshi, Namashi Chakraborty, Simrat Kaur and Darshan Kumar, among others. The film is slated to hit the screens on September 5.- EndsMust Watch IN THIS STORY#Mamata Banerjee#West Bengal

AI hype over? Just months after spending millions of dollars, Meta is suddenly firing AI engineers

Meta's AI division is reportedly going through a big shake-up. According to a Bloomberg report, the company is splitting its AI unit into four different groups, each with a separate focus. On paper, this looks like a way to redefine objectives and avoid confusion. But behind the scenes, AI engineers and researchers seem worried. There are already talks of job cuts and reassignments, even though Meta has spent the last year aggressively hiring AI talent with high other words, this sudden shift in tone from expansion to possible downsizing has left staff unsettled. It has also, as the move comes just days after a rather muted GPT-5 launch from OpenAI, sparked speculation that the AI hype is already slowing down, and suddenly various tech companies might be curtailing their AI ambitions. Restructuring under new leadershipAt Meta, the new structure of the AI division is being led by the company's recently appointed chief AI officer and former CEO of Scale AI, Alexandr Wang. In an internal note, Wang wrote that Meta needs to be better organised if it wants to reach its long-term goal of building superintelligence. 'Superintelligence is coming, and in order to take it seriously, we need to organise around the key areas that will be critical to reach it — research, product and infra,' he wrote. As part of this plan, the AI division — now renamed Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) — will run as four teams. One team will handle large language models such as Llama. Another, under the FAIR banner, will continue long-term AI research. A third, led by former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, will work on consumer-facing AI products. The fourth will focus on infrastructure, including data centres and computing while this may look tidy in theory, not everyone is convinced. As per a New York Times report, Meta is considering firing some AI engineers or moving staff around within its AI workforce, which now numbers several thousand. Of course, nothing is confirmed yet, but the uncertainty has definitely rattled employees. Some executives have already left, adding to the sense of instability. For a division once described as Meta's biggest growth driver, even the possibility of layoffs feels like a sharp the AI hype over? All said, the sudden change raises a bigger question — is the AI hype beginning to cool off? This is particularly a relevant question given that Meta's move comes just days after OpenAI launched a muted ChatGPT-5, which didn't impress users as much as the company's earlier AI models did. advertisementOver the last two years, AI has dominated headlines, and companies have rushed to call themselves AI-first. But just like previously hyped technologies — blockchain or the metaverse — is AI also going the same way, or is it real?Take DeepSeek, for example. It grabbed attention almost overnight with a free, powerful model that could rival OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini. But since then, it has gone quiet, and the excitement has a day ago, a report highlighted that many organisations that tried to make AI part of their workflow have not been very successful. The Study by MIT — titled State of AI in Business 2025 — found that only about 5 per cent of AI pilot projects actually lead to rapid revenue growth, while the vast majority stall or fail to deliver impact. 'Almost everywhere we went, enterprises were trying to build their own tool,' said Aditya Challapally, the lead author of the OpenAI CEO Sam Altman is now admitting that the industry is in a kind of bubble, although he qualifies it in terms of short run and long run. According to a Verge report, Altman said, 'When bubbles happen, smart people get overexcited about a kernel of truth. Are we in a phase where investors as a whole are overexcited about AI? My opinion is yes. Is AI the most important thing to happen in a very long time? My opinion is also yes.'advertisementBut is it really an AI slowdown at Meta? While there are some signs of the AI train slowing down, the events at Meta AI could be something else entirely — that is just a regular, good old restructuring. It is possible that the shake-up is indeed more about efficiency. With Meta splitting its AI division into four clear teams could reduce duplication of work and make accountability easier. And, if the job cuts do happen, they may be about trimming overlapping roles rather than pulling back on AI altogether.- Ends
