Surat courts orders termination of pregnancy of teacher accused of kidnapping 13-year-old

Indian Express13-05-2025

A special POCSO court in Surat on Tuesday granted the permission to terminate a 22-week-old pregnancy of a 23-year-old female teacher days after police arrested her and rescued her 13-year-old student after intercepting them in a bus at Shamlaji on Gujarat-Rajasthan border.
The teacher has been charged under BNS Act Sections 137(2) (Kidnapping), 127(3) (Punishment for wrongful confinement). The medical termination of pregnancy of the accused woman will be done at SMC-run SMIMER hospital in a week, and the foetus should be preserved for a DNA test, the order stated.
The woman had on Friday moved the special POCSO court, seeking permission for abortion under the Medical Termination of Pregnancy Act. Based on the application, the court instructed Punagam police to seek expert advice from the medical fraternity.
Police took her to SMIMER hospital for a medical examination, after which the hospital authorities submitted a report to police, stating that 'the termination of pregnancy is advised considering the risk factor'. Police submitted the report to the court on Tuesday.
The report, signed by professor Dr Archish Desai, Assistant professor Dr Sonam Parikh and Senior Resident Dr Thumar, stated, 'As the accused is unmarried and 23 years old, continuation of pregnancy may be harmful for her psychologically and socially. According to the MTP Act, Medical Termination of Pregnancy can be done up to 24 weeks of gestation, and the accused wants termination of pregnancy at present. The risk of complications of Second Trimester Medical Termination of Pregnancy includes incomplete abortion, retained products of conception, bleeding, infection, uterine rupture, failure of termination of pregnancy and may need surgical intervention (hysterotomy) and psychological complications. The mortality (death) risk is 0.6/100000. Considering the risk-benefit ratio, termination of pregnancy is advised from our side with an explanation of the risks. Kindly permit Termination of Pregnancy.'
The teacher and the student had gone missing on April 25 and were last seen in the CCTV footage at Surat Railway Station.
Police sources said the teacher had been offering tuition to the student for the last few years. On April 26, the boy's father had lodged a complaint of kidnapping against the teacher following which police had started a probe in the matter.
Later, police received information that the teacher and the student were returning to Gujarat in a private luxury bus from Jaipur, Rajasthan. A team of Surat police intercepted the bus and brought the teacher and the boy back to the city.
After primary interrogation, police said they learnt that the woman had allegedly confessed to establishing physical relations with the boy following which POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences) Act's Sections 8, 4 and 12 were added in the existing kidnapping complaint against the teacher.
After the police remand, the accused teacher was sent to judicial custody at Surat Central Jail.
The court order on Monday also stated: 'The accused girl should be discharged from the hospital after termination of pregnancy only, if she is found to be medically fit. The Medical Superintendent of SMIMER Hospital, Surat should submit report with regards to the termination of pregnancy to this court within a week. The Investigating Officer should take custody of the accused and send her to Jail after she is discharged from the hospital.'
The court also observed, 'The continuance of the pregnancy would involve a risk to the life of the pregnant woman or of grave injury on physical and mental health, or there is a substantial risk that if the child were born, it would suffer from such physical or mental abnormalities…'

Fireworks and stones thrown at police, Trump sends 2000 National Guards as violent protests start in Los Angeles, reason is...

Protesters, law enforcement exchange fireworks and tear gas in Los Angeles- Reuters Los Angeles: In a significant turn of events from the United States of America, fireworks exploded outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles on June 7) and law enforcement personnel fired less lethal rounds at protesters as the city entered a second straight night of demonstrations against immigration raids, as per a report by news agency Reuters. The security agents confronted around 100 protesters, where some demonstrators displayed Mexican flags and others covered their mouths with respiratory masks. President Donald Trump's border czar, Tom Homan, told Fox News that the National Guard would be deployed in Los Angeles on Saturday evening. As a result of the action, President Donald Trump has sent 2000 National Guards to control the situation. California Governor Gavin Newsom called the decision 'purposefully inflammatory.' 'If Governor Gavin Newscum, of California, and Mayor Karen Bass, of Los Angeles , can't do their jobs, which everyone knows they can't, then the Federal Government will step in and solve the problem, RIOTS & LOOTERS, the way it should be solved!!!' Trump posted on his Truth Social platform. The protests pit Democratic-run Los Angeles , where census data suggests a significant portion of the population is Hispanic and foreign-born, against Trump's Republican White House, which has made cracking down on immigration a hallmark of his second term. Girl found dead inside suitcase in northeast Delhi; family alleges sexual assault, stages protest

A nine-year-old girl was found stuffed in a suitcase at a neighbour's house in northeast Delhi's Dayalpur area, triggering protests by family members and locals who alleged sexual assault and murder of the minor. Police and paramilitary personnel have been deployed in the area on Sunday to maintain law and order. Police sources said the perpetrator seems to have fled after stuffing her in a suitcase. Senior officials of the Delhi Police said all angles are being probed, including sexual assault. "We are awaiting the autopsy report to confirm the cause of death. Teams have been formed to nab the absconding accused. We are taking this matter with utmost seriousness," a police officer said. The child, a resident of Nehru Vihar, had gone to give ice to a relative living nearby around 7 pm, her family said. When she did not return home for a long time, her parents began searching for her. According to the victim's father, they approached several relatives and neighbours, but no one had seen her after her brief visit to one relative's house. "She had only gone to deliver some ice to our relatives. They said she stayed for five minutes and left. But she never came back. We looked everywhere. Finally, someone told us she was seen entering a house nearby. That's where we found her in a suitcase," he said. The girl's father alleged that when he reached the house, it was locked. Suspecting something was wrong, he broke the lock and entered the room. Inside, he found his daughter stuffed in a bloodstained suitcase. They rushed her to a local clinic, but the doctor asked them to take her to a hospital immediately. At Jag Pravesh Chandra Hospital in Shastri Park, doctors declared her brought dead, the father said. A PCR call reporting the incident was received at Dayalpur police station around 8.41 pm, police said. A police team was immediately dispatched to Gali No. 2, Nehru Vihar, where they learned that the girl had already been taken to Jag Pravesh Chandra (JPC) Hospital by her father, a senior police officer said. Hospital authorities informed the police that the girl was declared dead. Doctor indicated possible sexual assault "Prima facie, doctors observed visible injuries on her face and have indicated possible sexual assault," a senior police officer said. Following the incident, crime scene and forensic science laboratory (FSL) teams were called to inspect the spot and collect evidence. Police said they are working to identify and apprehend the perpetrator. A case has been registered at Dayalpur Police Station under relevant sections of the BNS, along with Section 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. "Multiple teams have been deployed to collect clues and trace the accused. The investigation is being done on priority," the officer added. Protest in neighbourhood The incident sparked massive outrage in the neighbourhood. Soon after news of the girl's death spread, hundreds of residents, including the girl's relatives, blocked a nearby road and sat on dharna demanding justice. The protestors raised slogans against the police, alleging negligence, and demanded the immediate arrest of the culprit. Several shopkeepers were forced to shut down their establishments due to the tension in the area. Many of them said they were afraid of violence and chose to shut down shutters after protesters began marching through the market lanes. With the situation getting tense, a heavy police force was deployed in Nehru Vihar and adjoining areas to maintain law and order. Later, paramilitary personnel were also called in as a precautionary measure. Senior police officers were seen trying to pacify the crowd and reassure the family that strict action would be taken in the case. Traffic movement in the Dayalpur area was severely affected, with commuters stuck for hours. Vehicles were seen taking alternate routes, and several emergency services faced delays due to the road blockade. The victim's mother was seen inconsolable and in a state of deep shock. "She was crying and screaming 'bring back my daughter...'," a neighbour said, holding back tears. The victim's father said he was devastated and demanded justice. "We got to know about what happened very late. The police came around 1 am and collected evidence from the house. But the main accused is still roaming free. I will not rest until he is punished," he said.
