Kota Kinabalu: Kelab Usahawanita Sabah Chairperson Datuk Noraini Idris has called for the establishment of a more structured and inclusive support ecosystem to empower women entrepreneurs across Sabah, particularly those in rural areas. She proposed a number of initiatives aimed at strengthening the capabilities and reach of women-led enterprises in the State, including a women-focused entrepreneurial and skills training programme, encompassing intensive training on technical skills, financial management, business operations, digital marketing and innovation. 'Such programmes will help make us more competent in facing the challenges of today's dynamic marketplace,' she said at the 2025 Sabah Women Empowerment Programme at Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) here Tuesday. The event was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. Noraini also called for the creation of a mentorship and networking platform for women entrepreneurs in Sabah. 'We propose a mentorship initiative in collaboration with successful entrepreneurs and industry players, where experienced women entrepreneurs guide newcomers. This will promote the formation of professional and social networks to share knowledge and business opportunities,' she said. A third proposal was to enhance market access initiatives through the organisation of trade exhibitions and expos, enabling women entrepreneurs to connect with broader and more diverse markets. She also urged for targeted support for women entrepreneurs in rural industries, ensuring that empowerment programmes are tailored to the realities and constraints faced by rural women so that they are not left behind in the State's economic development. 'In line with the digital economy, we also need sustained support in digital marketing. Creating dedicated e-commerce platforms for Sabah's women entrepreneurs – similar to Shopee, Lazada or even a home-grown platform – can open wider market access, both nationally and internationally,' she said. Noraini proposed for the establishment of a one-stop centre in each district to centralise marketing, promotional activities, product display and training. 'These centres could serve as hubs for information sharing on funding opportunities, training programmes, and support services tailored to women entrepreneurs,' she explained. She also expressed appreciation for the impact of the Sabah Women Empowerment Programme, saying the participants gained invaluable insights and were inspired by success stories shared during the event. 'These stories have given us the courage to move forward and face complex economic challenges,' she said. Noraini also commended Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) and its strategic partners for providing comprehensive support, particularly in exposing women to the entrepreneurial ecosystem, digital training and capacity building. 'We feel more prepared to enter larger markets and compete in an increasingly demanding economic landscape,' she said. According to her, the programme successfully fostered connections among participants, building a unique support community that will continue to empower its members. 'We believe this network will become a valuable asset as we strive for personal and business advancement,' she added. She also extended her heartfelt thanks to the Deputy Prime Minister for his leadership and support of women's economic empowerment. 'As women entrepreneurs in Sabah, we face a unique set of challenges, especially those related to access to capital and market networks – particularly for women in rural areas,' she said. While there are financing schemes available through agencies such as Mara and other government bodies, Noraini said access to information about these schemes remains limited. 'Many rural women entrepreneurs are unaware of the financing schemes available and the procedures involved in applying for them,' she said, adding that poor infrastructure and geographical isolation further hinder access to technology and digital platforms. 'In this context, programmes like this are crucial. They do not just impart knowledge and skills but also open the door to much-needed support from both government agencies and the private sector,' she said. The Sabah Women Empowerment Programme had created meaningful impact by boosting knowledge, skills and self-confidence among women in the State. 'This initiative aligns with the Government's goal of increasing women's participation in entrepreneurship and economic growth. Women are not just the backbone of families—they are the drivers of the national economy,' she said. She emphasised that such programmes demonstrate the Government's commitment to providing more opportunities, mentorship and support to ensure that women become competitive, resilient and successful entrepreneurs. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Aid helps single mums stretch the ringgit

Value for money: Nor Laily Azura (right) and Noraini buying daily necessities using Sara aid at a supermarket. — Bernama KUALA NERUS: The Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (Sara) financial aid via MyKad not only ensures assistance reaches deserving people but also allows recipients to benefit from special promotional prices at some supermarkets. Sharing her experience, domestic helper Noraini Sidek@Ali, 49, said certain supermarkets in the district here offer lower prices to Sara recipients who pay using MyKad. 'They give special prices to help people in the B40 group like us. 'This way, I feel the aid goes to the right people,' the single mother of four told Bernama. Noraini, who earns around RM600 a month and also receives state government aid, said the RM100 monthly assistance she has been getting since April has been a big help in buying basic necessities. 'It helps me save a little each month because I don't have to worry so much about grocery expenses,' she said. Noraini's younger sister, Nor Laily Azura, is also a Sara recipient. Life has been tough for Nor Laily, whose husband died in a road accident in 2019. She has two daughters, aged six and 11. Despite getting her late husband's pension and being a recipient of state government aid, she earns just RM400 a month as a homestay helper. 'I can't take a full-time job now because I have to care for my children and my elderly father. 'Thankfully, since March, I've been receiving RM200 a month from Sara. At least I don't have to worry so much about grocery expenses,' she said. For both Noraini and Nor Laily, the Sara assistance delivered directly via MyKad not only helps ease their financial burden but also makes life easier for single mothers taking care of their children and other daily responsibilities. This targeted cash aid initiative for those most in need has now been expanded to benefit 5.4 million recipients, comprising 700,000 existing beneficiaries under eKasih and 4.7 million under the Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR). Under Budget 2025, allocations for STR and Sara have been increased to RM13bil from RM10bil previously, with the annual Sara aid raised to RM2,100 from RM1,200 last year. The initiative is part of the Madani Economy framework, which focuses on empowering low-income households through fair opportunities, better living standards and comprehensive social protection. In conjunction with National Day, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Tuesday announced a one-off RM100 payment to all Malaysian citizens aged 18 and above. The payment, credited directly to recipients' MyKad under Sara, will benefit 22 million Malaysians. The allocation involves an extra RM2bil, bringing the total funding for STR and Sara this year to RM15bil, the highest in the nation's history for cash assistance. The funds can be utilised from Aug 31 to Dec 31 at more than 4,500 shops and supermarkets nationwide.

MyKad-linked SARA aid eases financial burden for single mothers in Malaysia

KUALA NERUS: The Sumbangan Asas Rahmah (SARA) aid distributed via MyKad is proving to be a lifeline for single mothers, offering not just financial relief but also exclusive discounts at supermarkets. Noraini Sidek@Ali, a 49-year-old single mother of four, shared how the RM100 monthly assistance she receives helps her manage household expenses. 'Supermarkets here give special prices to SARA recipients when we pay with MyKad. It really helps B40 families like mine,' she said. Working as a domestic helper with a monthly income of RM600, Noraini relies on state aid and SARA to support her youngest son, who is still in school. 'This assistance lets me save a little each month,' she added. Her younger sister, Nor Laily Azura, also a SARA recipient, appreciates the convenience and security of using MyKad for purchases. 'I don't need to carry cash or a bank card. It's safer, especially when I'm out with my kids,' said Nor Laily, who lost her husband in a road accident in 2019. Despite earning RM400 a month as a homestay helper and receiving her late husband's pension, supporting her two daughters remains a challenge. The RM200 monthly SARA aid since March has eased some of her financial stress. The SARA initiative, now expanded to 5.4 million recipients, is part of the MADANI Economy framework aimed at uplifting low-income households. Budget 2025 increased allocations for SARA and Sumbangan Tunai Rahmah (STR) to RM13 billion, with annual SARA aid raised to RM2,100 per recipient. In celebration of National Day, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced a one-off RM100 payment for Malaysians aged 18 and above, credited directly to their MyKad-linked SARA accounts. This additional RM2 billion allocation brings total cash assistance funding to RM15 billion, the highest in Malaysia's history. Recipients can use the funds at over 4,500 participating outlets nationwide from Aug 31 to Dec 31. – Bernama
