Investigators Believe They Know How Gene Hackman's Dog Died
On Friday afternoon, the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department put the rumor mill to rest when they finally shared their findings about how Gene Hackman and Betsy Arakawa died in their New Mexico home. But several questions still remain, including exactly what caused the death of the couple's beloved dog Zinna.
Based on their investigation, authorities concluded that Arakawa died on February 11 from hantavirus pulmonary syndrome, an infectious disease that is typically carried by deer mice. Hackman is believed to have died a week later, on February 18, of heart disease, with Alzheimer's noted as an additional contributing factor. Zinna's death, however, is a bit harder to determine.While authorities are still awaiting necropsy results on the pooch, a 12-year-old Australian Kelpie mix, New Mexico State Public Health Veterinarian Erin Phipps has suggested that dehydration and starvation are two likely causes of the dog's death. 'Given the timelines presented, it is a possibility,' she said at Friday's press conference, according to CNN.
Though Phipps could not completely rule out Zinna being exposed to hantavirus, the infection that led to Arakawa's untimely death, she deemed it extremely unlikely, as 'Dogs do not get sick from hantavirus.'
'These viruses are zoonotic," Phipps added, "meaning they are transmitted from animals to humans.'
Zinna was one of Hackman and Arakawa's three dogs, and the only one who died with them. Her body was discovered in a closed kennel in the same bathroom where Arakawa was found, only 10 to 15 feet from her owner. The reason Zinna was crated versus free-roaming the home appears to be the result of a recent medical procedure.'We know from our investigation that on February 9, 2025, [Arakawa] picked up Zinna from Gruda Veterinary Hospital,' Santa Fe County Sheriff Adan Mendoza shared on Friday. 'There was a procedure that was done with the dog, which may explain why the dog was in a crate at the residence.'
Hackman and Arakawa's two surviving pups, a German shepherd named Bear and a shepherd mix named Nikki, are currently being looked after by Joey Padilla, a friend of the couple who owns Santa Fe Tails, a local boarding facility. In a recent interview with ABC News, Padilla said the dogs "are safe and adjusting.' He also confirmed that he will continue to look after the dogs 'until I get word on what Betsy's wishes for these dogs are.'

Thunberg, activists in Israeli custody after delivery attempt to Gaza
June 9 (UPI) -- The Israeli government announced Monday that the boat crew of civilians that included Swedish activist Greta Thunberg it intercepted attempting to transport humanitarian supplies to Gaza will be returned to their home countries upon arrival in Israel. The Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs, or MFA, reported across its social media platform that the vessel, identified as the "Madleen" by the nonprofit Freedom Flotilla Coalition organization, or FFC, that launched it, is being brought to an Israel port. The MFA refers to the craft as a "selfie yacht," and has confirmed that Thunberg is aboard, in addition to other "celebrities," but did not name them. The FFC listed all their names last week after the announcement that the boat was already on its way "with life-saving aid, to break Israel's illegal siege of Gaza and establish a people's sea corridor." The MFA also stated that the passengers aboard the Madleen have been supplied with sandwiches and water, and that the "tiny amount of aid that wasn't consumed by the 'celebrities' will be transferred to Gaza through real humanitarian channels." It also posted a photo of Thunberg Monday, apparently about to receive food and bottled water from someone dressed in military apparel. "Greta Thunberg is currently on her way to Israel, safe and in good spirits," the image was captioned. Another person who was aboard the Madleen European Parliament member Rima Hassan of France, who posted to X late Monday morning that "the crew of the Freedom Flotilla has been unlawfully detained by Israel for more than 14 hours" since Israel commandeered the vessel. Thunberg had released a video via her social media pages late Sunday that alleged "If you see this video, it means we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces or forces that support Israel." German citizen Yasemin Acar, also aboard the Madleen, posted a video of herself Sunday night to Instagram in an unspecified situation, but was wearing a life jacket and apparently had at least one arm raised behind her head as sirens wailed in the background and an amplified voice that seemingly said "Don't be afraid" and "Stay where you are" in English could also be heard." The FFC posted a separate message to Instagram Sunday which purported that "drones dropped unidentified chemicals on the Madleen. Immediately after, our peaceful volunteers were rammed and intercepted before Israeli forces boarded the vessel. We lost all contact with them seconds later." An updated post from the FFC Monday called out what it has described as an "illegal attack" by Israel on the Madleen. It has been widely reported that the Madleen has been brought to Israel's Port of Ashdod, and that Sweden's foreign ministry has confirmed it is in touch with Israel over Thunberg, and will stand by should the need for consular assistance be required.

Lefty LA Mayor Karen Bass on Monday blamed the riots ripping apart her city on ICE agents trying to uphold the law. Bass added that while Los Angeles is 'peaceful now,' the city could quickly devolve into further chaos if the federal immigration raids — which have netted convicted violent criminals — continue. A Florida Dog Was Enjoying His Backyard When 'All of a Sudden' an Alligator Dragged Him Away
An alligator attacked a German shepherd dog outside the pet's home in Wesley Chapel, Florida, on June 2 The dog, Zeus, suffered multiple injuries, including a fractured jaw and several puncture wounds at the neck, according to a GoFundMe page for the pup Zeus' family says the attacking alligator dragged the dog into a nearby pond, but eventually let the pet go, giving the canine a chance to escapeA German shepherd dog narrowly escaped death in an alligator attack just outside of his home in Wesley Chapel, Florida, according to the pet's parents. The dog, named Zeus, suffered multiple injuries after "a large alligator broke through [the] fence" of his owner's home and "attacked him" on the night of June 2, according to a GoFundMe page created by the dog's distraught owner, Susan Alkhatib. "Our beloved dog Zeus was sitting peacefully in the lanai with my dad when he heard a small animal in the backyard," wrote Alkhatib. According to the owner, Zeus "ran out the doggy door to investigate" and "within seconds," the alligator "grabbed the dog and dragged him back into the water." "We rushed outside with a flashlight and were shocked to see Zeus swimming back toward us, wounded but fighting to survive," Alkhatib continued. "My mom waded into the water to help him out, and we rushed him to the nearest emergency vet as he was bleeding heavily from his mouth." One family member recalled the attack to WFLA, "All of a sudden, I couldn't hear him anymore. My dad came in frantic. I'd never seen him like that. He said, 'The alligator just took Zeus.'" "The alligator had just let go of Zeus," Alkhatib told the outlet. "We started yelling at him to come toward us. When he got closer, he got tired. So we had to kind of go into the pond a little bit to get him." Zeus suffered a displaced jaw and multiple puncture wounds to his neck in the vicious attack, according to the GoFundMe page. The page has raised over $6,800 of its $10,000 to help cover veterinary bills. Photos released by the dog's owner show the pooch bleeding from his neck and his injured jaw. Alkhatib called the dog's escape from the attack "a miracle" on her GoFundMe page. "The vet told us the gator had just missed his jugular — it looked like Zeus's entire head had been in the gator's mouth. The fact that he made it out alive is nothing short of a miracle," she wrote.
