Four storms have formed so far in 2025 hurricane season. What's next?
With August underway, hurricane season still has three months left.
So far, there have been four tropical storms: Andrea, Barry, Chantal and Dexter.
Despite the low activity so far into hurricane season, the National Hurricane Center advises people to remain prepared, as August and September are typically the most active months of the season.
The first three storms caused no direct deaths and no damage in the United States and saw max winds ranging from 35 to 50 knots.
Tropical Storm Dexter formed Aug. 3 off the North Carolina coast and is forecast to move northeast away from the U.S. coast.
As of Aug. 4, two disturbances remain in the Atlantic Ocean.
A tropical wave off the African coast formed Aug. 2 and was producing some shower and thunderstorm activity as of Aug. 5. It is forecast to move west-northwestward over the new few days. A tropical depression has a 50% chance of formation late this week or over the weekend.
On Aug. 3, forecasters found a broad area of low pressure off the coast of the southeastern U.S. It has a 40% chance of forming into a tropical depression by the end of the week or the weekend as it continues to move westward to northwestward.
Around this time in 2025, Hurricane Debby made its way to Florida and Georgia before becoming a tropical storm. The system lasted for about five days as it moved northeast, producing heavy rainfall, three tornadoes and minor coastal flooding.
