CMRL to seek nod for operating last-mile connectivity vehicles

Chennai Metro Rail plans to write to the State government seeking permission to operate vehicles to improve last-mile connectivity at ten major stations in the phase-I and phase-I extension network.
Barring a brief period before the pandemic when Chennai Metro Rail ran share cabs and share autorickshaws at several stations, there has never been any sustained effort to operate such shuttle services from the neighbourhood areas.Moreover, mini-buses are being operated only from some stations.
Manystations of the 54-km-longphase-I and phase-I extension network are located on arterial roads such as Anna Salai, GST Road and Poonamallee Road. While this is beneficial to office-goers as the Metro Rail network connects many government and private establishments, commuters without vehicles struggle to reach the stations from residential areas.
According to officials of the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL), they will write to the State Transport Department shortly, requesting permission for operating such last-mile connectivity services. 'We are going to ask them to allow us to operate these last-mile connectivity vehicles or shuttle services under the provisions of State Transport Undertaking of the State government. If they give us the nod, then we can go ahead with floating the bids for the project,' an official said.
Ten stations, including Wimco Nagar, Chennai Airport, Thirumangalam, Anna Nagar East, Nanganallur, Koyambedu, Vadapalani and Washermenpet, will have shuttle buses if CMRL gets the approval.
At terminal stations such as Chennai Airport and Wimco Nagar, the shuttle buses will cover a 10-km radius. In the remaining stations, they will operate over a 5-km radius. 'We are thinking of operating 8, 10, 15 and 25-seater vehicles based on the demand in each station,' another official said.
V.A.R. Srivatson, a resident of Nanganallur who often travels to the High Court and Thousand Lights said, if people took an autorickshaw to the nearest station, it would certainly cost more than the metro fare.
'Additionally, not everyone can walk from their residence to the station as the streets are bereft of well-paved footpaths in several areas. In the interest of train patrons, the CMRL must resume last-mile connectivity system soon,' he said.

Senior officials from CMRL, Alstom, and AEON were also present at the event, including Mr. A. R. Rajendran and Mr. P. Thiagarajan. Alstom Transport India got official approval on 28 April 2025 for supplying trains under Contract ARE04A for Chennai Metro Phase 2.

CHENNAI: Chennai is set to receive its first driverless metro train by February 2027 under a Rs 1,538.35 crore contract awarded to Alstom Transport India, as the city wraps up procurement for its Phase 2 metro expansion. The contract, signed this week by Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) and Alstom, covers the supply of 32 fully automated three-car trains — 96 coaches in total — along with a 15-year comprehensive maintenance commitment. The driverless trains, designed for Unattended Train Operation (UTO), are expected to undergo 14 months of testing and integration trials following the initial delivery. Subsequent trains will be delivered in phases between September 2027 and May 2028, according to CMRL. 'This is the third and final rolling stock package under Phase 2,' CMRL said in a statement, adding that with this agreement, all major train procurement for the project is now complete. Deliveries for the earlier two contracts,also awarded to Alstom, are already underway. Manoj Goyal, Director (Systems & Operations) at CMRL, and Parag Nandlal Gohel, Customer Director (South) at Alstom, signed the agreement in the presence of senior officials from CMRL, general consultant AEON, and Alstom. The scope of work includes design, manufacturing, supply, testing, commissioning, personnel training, and long-term maintenance of the new rolling stock. The trains are expected to be manufactured at Alstom's facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh.

French transport company Alstom has secured a contract worth €135 million (approximately ₹1,321 crore) from Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) for Phase II of the city's metro project. PTI has reported that the deal includes the design, manufacture, supply, testing, and commissioning of 96 Metropolis metro cars Under the contract, Alstom will supply 32 three-car trainsets. The company will also provide 15 years of maintenance services after the warranty period. This will include cleaning, obsolescence management, and upkeep of plant and machinery at the metro trains will be manufactured at Alstom's facility in Sri City, Andhra Pradesh, aligning with the Make in India and Atmanirbhar Bharat initiatives. Each trainset can carry around 900 passengers and is designed for multiple unit operations. They will include evacuation features for train-to-train and train-to-track 119-km Phase II network will have three corridors, covering more than 76 km of elevated track and 43 km Loison, Managing Director, Alstom India, said, 'This new contract strengthens our association with CMRL in helping modernise Chennai's urban rail mobility landscape.'Alstom is currently producing 108 driverless Metropolis cars for another section of Phase II, connecting Poonamallee Bypass to Light House through 30 stations — 18 elevated and 12 its first contract with CMRL in 2010, Alstom has delivered 208 metro cars for Phase I of the project.
