Youth beaten up for using online commerce application
The Baner police have booked three persons identified as Ajay, Sumit Shinde and Ranjit for brutally assaulting Shivraj Ramkisan Lavhale, 20, on May 31 when the latter was using a quick commerce online application. The accused threatened the complainant from taking orders from the app and physically assaulted him with iron rods. Lavhale's mother was also beaten up when she tried to intervene. The police lodged an FIR on June 1 under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 118(1),1 15(2), 352,3(5) against the accused. No arrests have been made so far.

Singer, his family lose Rs 20L in investment fraud
Ahmedabad: A singer and his family, from the Lambha area of the city, became victims of an investment fraud and lost Rs 20 lakh. A complaint in this matter was filed with the Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) on Tuesday. According to the complaint, the singer met the accused, a resident of Gandhinagar, in May 2022 during an event at a hotel in Ahmedabad. The accused introduced himself as the operator of a firm dealing in stock market investments and promised good returns every 21 days over a year. Trusting the accused, the singer's father gave Rs 5 lakh to the accused for investment. Later, the singer also gave Rs 5 lakh in the form of a cheque, followed by another Rs 5 lakh in cash. The accused provided a notarised affidavit mentioning investment terms to build trust. For security, the accused gave a cheque to the singer's father, which bounced as the account was blocked. The accused allegedly returned small amounts initially but stopped further payments. When asked for the remaining amount, the accused refused to pay. Meanwhile, the singer's relative invested Rs 5 lakh in the same scheme. Despite several follow-ups, he did not get his money back. DCB police lodged an FIR of cheating and criminal breach of trust under relevant sections of the BNS and began an investigation.

Allahabad HC upholds adult woman's right to choose life partner
Prayagraj: The Allahabad high court has directed the Bulandshahr SSP to provide protection to a newlywed couple who faced resistance from the woman's family due to their marriage, emphasising that an adult woman has the right to choose her life partner. Hearing the couple's plea, the high court warned that the SSP will be held accountable for any harm caused to the couple by the woman's family. A case was filed at Khurja police station in Bulandshahr in May under Section 87 (kidnapping) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The complainant alleged that a 26-year-old man from an upper caste had kidnapped his 24-year-old daughter and coerced her into marrying him at an Arya Samaj temple. The couple had subsequently approached the high court, seeking to have the FIR quashed and requesting protection from interference in their married life. The woman had specifically expressed concerns about potential honor killing. Hearing their petition, Justice JJ Munir, in his order dated June 2, stayed the arrest of the man and ordered Bulandshahr SSP to ensure that no one interferes in the couple's marital life. The high court also said that an adult woman has the right to choose her partner, and if any harm is caused to the petitioners, the SSP will be personally held accountable.

Oncologist Gangadharan receives death threat
Kochi: Noted oncologist Dr V P Gangadharan received a death threat in connection with an alleged case of medical negligence that allegedly led to a patient's death. The threat letter also demaded Rs 8.25 lakh as 'blood money' and warned of harm to his family members if the demand was not met. The threat letter was received at Lakeshore Hospital on May 17, and bore the name of a group identifying itself as 'Citizen for Justice' with a Mumbai return address. The letter included instructions to transfer the amount via a Bitcoin link or by scanning a QR code printed on it. Maradu police registered an FIR on May 22 under multiple BNS sections. The letter alleged that a young girl died due to the doctor's negligence, which subsequently led her mother taking her own life. It further claimed that the girl's father sought help from the organization that issued the threat. Police are preparing to transfer the case to cybercrime division for further investigation. TNN
