Ringgit to hold steady next week amid Fed watch and trade talk hopes, say analysts

Malay Mail19-07-2025
KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 — The ringgit is expected to hover around RM4.24 to RM4.26 next week amid mixed signals in the market.
This follows the anticipation of a potential meeting between United States (US) President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, as well as the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting by the end of the month.
SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes said the market is expected to adopt a tone of cautious optimism next week, as the potential Trump-Xi meeting could reset the US-China dialogue, lifting broader Asian sentiment.
'For Malaysia, any thaw in trade tensions could brighten the macro outlook and, by extension, offer a floor to the ringgit in the near term. That diplomatic backdrop, however tentative, has helped curb more aggressive ringgit selling into the weekend,' he told Bernama.
Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said that the next FOMC meeting will be held on July 29 and 30, and therefore, market participants will be closely watching to see whether the US Federal Reserve (Fed) will cut the Fed Fund Rate.
'Next week, there are not many data points to look at other than some comments from the Fed officials; thus, the market will be adopting a wait-and-see stance,' he added.
Meanwhile, Kenanga Investment Bank Bhd said the ringgit remains supported by improving domestic fundamentals, rising foreign direct investment inflows, and infrastructure catalysts such as the resumption of the Mass Rapid Transit 3 project.
'We expect US dollar-ringgit to range between RM4.23 to RM4.25 per US dollar in the near term,' it said in a note today.
On a Friday-to-Friday basis, the ringgit ended the week better against the greenback, closing at 4.2410/2455 as compared with 4.2475/2525 previously.
The local note also traded higher against a basket of major currencies.
The ringgit appreciated vis-à-vis the Japanese yen to 2.8517/8549 from 2.8893/8929, and strengthened against the British pound to 5.6999/7060 from 5.7524/7592 last Friday.
It also rose versus the euro to 4.9336/9388 from 4.9679/9737 at the end of last week.
Against Asean currencies, the ringgit traded mostly higher.
The local note firmed against the Singapore dollar to 3.3027/3065 from 3.3186/3228, strengthened versus the Indonesian rupiah to 260.2/260.6 from 261.8/262.3 previously, and improved against the Philippine peso to 7.41/7.43 from 7.52/7.53 last Friday.
However, it weakened versus the Thai baht to 13.3027/3065 from 13.0668/0886. — Bernama

TechStore secures RM7.75m Customs job for baggage and body scanners at checkpoint as RTS Link project expands

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 — TechStore Bhd's wholly-owned unit Tech-Store Malaysia Sdn Bhd has secured a RM7.75 million from the Royal Malaysian Customs Department to provide leasing and training services for four baggage scanner machines and two body scanner machines with accessories. The equipment will be deployed at the Woodlands North Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) facility in Singapore under the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link project, TechStore said. 'The contract period would be 77 months from Aug 1, 2025, to Dec 31, 2031,' the information technology (IT) solutions provider said in a filing with Bursa Malaysia. The ACE Market-listed company said Tech-Store Malaysia will submit a performance bond of RM60,367.34, which is five per cent of the contract value divided by six years and five months as security for the proper and due performance of the works. In a separate statement, TechStore managing director Tan Hock Lim said the contract further expands its involvement in the RTS Link project, which encompasses design consultation for depot equipment and service vehicles, uninterruptible power supply, the RTS enterprise resource planning work packages, and the project for fit-out works for Malaysian agencies at Woodlands North CIQ. 'Beyond the RTS Link, we are involved in major initiatives such as the LRT Kelana Jaya Line, LRT Ampang Line, MRT Kajang Line, and the ongoing LRT3. 'With the government's increasing push toward public transport digitalisation, we see growing demand for integrated, secure, and localised enterprise IT solutions,' he said. The group's unbilled order book remains healthy at RM135.3 million as at May 31, 2025, supported by a robust job pipeline with a tender book totalling RM1.2 billion. TechStore was listed on Bursa Malaysia on Feb 18, 2025, and has raised a total of RM25 million in proceeds to accelerate its growth plans and enhance its capacity to undertake larger-scale projects. — Bernama

Gold Futures Forecast To Trade Range-bound Next Week

By Fatin Umairah Abdul Hamid KUALA LUMPUR, July 26 (Bernama) -- Gold futures on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives are expected to trade in a narrow range next week, tracking United States (US) COMEX gold amid the potential finalisation of US trade agreements with the European Union (EU) and Asia-Pacific countries, said an analyst. SPI Asset Management managing partner Stephen Innes noted that the EU and the US are moving towards a trade deal that could include a 15 per cent US baseline tariff on EU goods and possible exemptions. However, he said, the yellow metal could find support if the US dollar weakens, especially amid speculation over Federal Reserve chair Jerome Powell's stance on interest rates. 'My outlook for the week ahead sees gold finding a bid near the US$3,335 area, with topside resistance around US$3,395 (per troy ounce). The broader range will be dictated by how much traction the 'soft landing plus trade peace' narrative gains versus lingering macroeconomic uncertainty and rate expectations,' he told Bernama. On a weekly basis, the spot-month July 2025 contract slipped to US$3,350.0 per troy ounce on Friday from US$3,360.0 a week earlier, the August 2025 contract decreased to US$3,367.4 per troy ounce from US$3,378.3 previously, and the September 2025 contract fell to US$3,373.3 per troy ounce from US$3,384.20. Meanwhile, the October 2025, December 2025, and February 2026 contracts also settled lower at US$3,402.6 per troy ounce from US$3,413.40 previously. Weekly trading volume expanded to 34 lots from 12 lots in the previous week, while open interest rose to 71 contracts from 67 contracts. Physical gold was priced at US$3,365.85 per troy ounce based on the London Bullion Market Association's afternoon fix on July 24, 2025.

Ringgit ends lower vs greenback following Bank Negara's GDP forecast revision

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 —The ringgit ended easier against the US dollar today, as traders' sentiment was affected by Bank Negara Malaysia's (BNM) gross domestic product (GDP) revision for the year. At 6pm, the local note slid to 4.2275/2345 versus the greenback from last Friday's close of 4.2195/2245. The central bank has revised Malaysia's 2025 GDP growth to 4.0-4.8 per cent from 4.5-5.5 per cent previously, and similarly, the inflation rate for 2025 is projected to range between 1.5 per cent and 2.3 per cent from the previous forecast of 2.0-3.5 per cent. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the BNM is being pragmatic by adjusting the growth forecast lower, taking into account external risks. At the same time, a lower inflation forecast suggests that the impact from the anticipated RON95 subsidies rationalisation is likely to be manageable. 'As such, we foresee this will be positive for the ringgit in the mid- to long-term as fiscal consolidation will continue to take place, resulting in more fiscal space which can be redirected into targeted assistance as well as higher development expenditure (DE). 'This Thursday, the government will announce the 13th Malaysia Plan, and we foresee a higher allocation for DE in the next five years to drive the Malaysian economy into high-income status,' he said to Bernama. Meanwhile, he noted that the US Dollar Index (DXY) has strengthened, buoyed by optimism over the upcoming US-China trade talks. 'The US Dollar Index (DXY) was up 0.5 per cent to 98.13 points as news over US tariffs is seen to be dollar-positive,' he said. US and Chinese officials are set to meet in Sweden today, with both parties expected to extend the trade truce. At the close, the ringgit ended higher against most major currencies. It rose against the Japanese yen to 2.8497/8546 from 2.8529/8565 at the close last Friday, appreciated versus the British pound to 5.6720/6814 from 5.6786/6853 last week, and edged higher against the euro to 4.9331/9412 from 4.9507/9566 previously. However, the ringgit was mixed against regional peers. It was almost flat against the Indonesian rupiah at 258.3/258.9 from 258.5/258.9 last Friday, gained against the Singapore dollar to 3.2917/2974 from 3.2937/2978 last week, weakened versus the Thai baht to 13.0511/0787 from 13.0268/0478 and fell against the Philippine peso to 7.39/7.41 from 7.38/7.40 previously. — Bernama
