‘The venue has been compromised...': Matthew Hayden recalls scary night IPL was suspended due to IND-PAK conflict
Former Australia cricketer Matthew Hayden recalled the chilling night the IPL 2025 was suspended mid-match due to India-Pakistan tensions. The match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala was called off after drone attacks in nearby areas. read more Former Australian cricketer and commentator Matthew Hayden has shared his scary experience from the night the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season was suspended midway due to safety concerns during an India-Pakistan conflict. Speaking on the All Over Bar The Cricket podcast, Hayden revealed that the incident happened when he was travelling from Mumbai to Delhi, and then had to drive 11-12 hours to Dharamsala for the match. It was for the match between the Punjab Kings and the Delhi Capitals. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD By the time Hayden and others reached the venue, they were told the game would go on. But the lights at the stadium started to go off soon after and the match was abandoned with everyone evacuated quickly. 'I'd flown from Mumbai overnight to Delhi because there wasn't a connecting flight with Punjab's home ground (for that game) Dharamsala. Magnificent ground. But by the time I landed in Delhi, there was no airport open,' Hayden said. 'It was at the time that coincided with the incursion of Pakistan back into India and we were talking drones navigating across the skies, taking out ground to air missiles and it was just eerie. We had to take a car via Chandigarh up to Dharamsala. That's a 11 and a half, 12 hour drive. By the time we reached the venue we were told the game was about to proceed,' he added. Hayden reveals what happened on the scary night Things took a strange turn when the stadium lights started going off during the game. While viewers were initially told it was a technical issue, Hayden admitted that the commentators were warned in advance. 'But half an hour before we went on air we were given a security message that if the light towers were to to go out, it's not a technical issue. It's actually a sign that the venue has been compromised and there will be an emergency evacuation response and we will proceed,' he said. 'I was mid-sentence with my usual garbage on air and the first light tower goes out so I've let the spectators and fans know that it has gone out. Then the second goes almost immediately. Next minute security came in like a blanket. Dropped my mic literally mid-sentence and we were ushered out of the ground,' he added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD A day after the incident, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officially suspended the IPL for a week. Once tensions between India and Pakistan eased and both sides agreed to a ceasefire, the BCCI confirmed the league would resume with a revised schedule featuring selected venues.

‘Jasprit Bumrah needs a proper off-season': Australia cricket great Glenn McGrath
Jasprit Bumrah CHENNAI: Premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah 's workload management has been a matter of intense discussion in Indian cricket circles for a while now. Given his sheer quality and the xfactor which he possesses, India have been wrapping Bumrah in cotton wool. As a result, India – opting to stick to their original plan of playing him in only three Tests during the England tour – had to field a XI sans the ace fast bowler at the Oval, in conditions where he could have proved to be a handful for England batters. While India appear to be sorely missing Bumrah's bag of tricks on a green top in the ongoing fifth Test, legendary Australian pacer Glenn McGrath is of the view that the men who matter have had to take 'tough' decisions due to Bumrah's unique qualities. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'You want him to be playing as many games as possible because he is a match winner. But it is a tough one because he has a unique bowling style. He puts more stress on his body than other fast bowlers,' said McGrath, the director of the MRF Pace Foundation here. 'In Australia, whenever Bumrah played, the matches were tight. But unfortunately, when he played backto-back matches, he had injury concerns. A lot of it depends on the captain and hierarchy and more so him (Bumrah), what he feels he can do,' McGrath added. Asked if the Shubman Gill-led India could have managed Bumrah better by reducing the volume of overs in the matches that he played, McGrath said, 'You want your best bowler bowling (for long) and him wanting to bowl as well. If Bumrah bowls in short spells, the batting team can just get through those three-four overs. India need another group of fast bowlers coming through to ensure Bumrah does not have to bowl long spells. India need other bowlers who can equally carry the workload.' Greenstone Lobo predicts result of India vs England fifth Test | What's in the stars? McGrath insisted that pacers like Bumrah will continue to suffer bumps in the road if they do not have a 'proper off-season' that usually lasts two months. Since many India internationals play round the year, they hardly get time away from competitive cricket. 'It is important for a fast bowler to have an off-season. If you just keep playing year in, year out, things (injuries) will happen. That is the nature of the beast. Good bowling action, good genetics and good work off the field are needed to get strong. There may be a freak who can bowl all day every day, but 99.9% of the fast bowlers need an off-season.' 'Test cricket alive and well' The battles in India's last two away tours – to Australia and England – have provided McGrath hope that Test cricket is still in a good state. 'I felt that Test cricket was struggling a bit, but the two series (Australia-India and England-India) have shown that Test cricket is alive and well, especially in those countries,' McGrath said.
