Dubai, UAE: The International Task Force on Teachers has formally appointed Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum Foundation for Medical and Educational Sciences as a member of the High-Level Steering Committee responsible for guiding a comprehensive global study by UNESCO on the status of teachers worldwide.
The decision was announced during the most recent meeting of the Teacher Task Force Steering Committee, held within the framework of Education 2030 goals. The session was attended by Ms Stefania Giannini, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Education, and Dr. Khalifa Al Suwaidi, Executive Director of Hamdan Foundation, alongside international experts and task force members from various countries.
Dr. Khalifa Al Suwaidi stated that the Foundation's inclusion in the High-Level Committee reflects its longstanding regional and international leadership in supporting teachers and promoting educational initiatives, under the direction of Sheikh Rashid Bin Hamdan Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Supreme President of the Foundation.
His Excellency emphasized the Foundation's commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for teachers through improved policies, development opportunities, and societal recognition—factors that directly influence the sustainability and quality of education systems.
The UNESCO-led study is a landmark initiative designed to establish a robust and evidence-based understanding of the challenges facing teachers and the teaching profession globally. It comes at a time of increasing teacher shortages and declining interest in the profession among younger generations. The study also aims to inform international policy and strategy development to enhance teacher support, improve working conditions, and elevate the professional status of teachers.
Hamdan Foundation's participation in the committee underscores its role as a strategic partner in global efforts to advance education—particularly in reforming and innovating teacher preparation and training systems. Through its membership, the Foundation will provide technical and knowledge-based support to help ensure the success of this global initiative, in line with its mission to enhance education quality and promote educational excellence.
Ms Stefania Giannini expressed her appreciation to participating institutions, commending the Teacher Task Force for keeping the issue of teachers at the forefront of the global education agenda. She also stressed the importance of joint efforts to build education systems that can meet the demands of today's world—with teachers at the core of the learning process.
The High-Level Steering Committee includes leading education experts, representatives of international organizations, and academic institutions. It is tasked with overseeing the implementation of the study, validating its findings, and contributing to the development of an expanded global report. The final report will be presented to UNESCO member states and will include policy recommendations to strengthen the teaching profession and ensure the availability of qualified, motivated teachers worldwide.

Burj Khalifa to Light Up With Pakistani Flag for Independence Day

Dubai's iconic skyline will shine with national pride as the Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building, lights up with the Pakistani flag tonight, August 14, at 7:50 p.m. UAE time, in honor of Pakistan's Independence Day. This dazzling tribute marks the 78th anniversary of Pakistan's independence and celebrates the vibrant Pakistani community residing in the UAE. The spectacular illumination is part of a heartfelt gesture that underscores the longstanding and robust ties between the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, and serves as a vivid display of solidarity with Pakistani expats and citizens alike. The flag-lighting event unfolds amid a day of community-wide celebrations. Earlier, flag-hoisting ceremonies took place at the Pakistan Embassy in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate in Dubai, where hundreds of attendees participated with enthusiasm and patriotic fervor. Notably, this visual tribute at the Burj Khalifa follows a grand Independence Day celebration held at Dubai Expo City on August 10, which saw an estimated 60,000 community members come together in solidarity and festive spirit—the largest of its kind to date. By illuminating the Burj Khalifa in Pakistan's national colours, green and white, Dubai offers not only a powerful symbol of unity, freedom, and pride but also reaffirms its commitment to celebrating cultural diversity and honoring the partner nations that enrich its social fabric.

Photos: Who is Sen Genshitsu, late Japanese tea master Sheikh Mohamed tweeted about?

UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Thursday, August 14 expressed his condolences over the passing of Dr Sen Genshitsu. In his message on X, Sheikh Mohamed said that the tea master was a "steadfast advocate of peace through education and cross-cultural dialogue." "By sharing his message with others in traditional Japanese tea ceremonies, Dr Sen remained an important voice in the pursuit of harmony among humankind," said the President. "May he rest in peace". Grand tea master Genshitsu passed away on August 14, 2025, at the age of 102. He was a tea master in his youth trained as a kamikaze pilot, but the war ended before he needed to carry out the suicide mission. He then travelled around the world, making cups of matcha for leaders and spreading his message of peace. Sen used ancient "Urasenke" tea tradition rituals to spotlight his anti-war messages, sharing his motto of "peacefulness through a bowl of tea". "A bowl of tea makes spirits very peaceful. When everyone is peaceful, there will be no war," he is quoted as saying. He was an ordained Zen monk, and became the 15th-generation grand master of the Urasenke school in 1964 following the death of his father who had previously headed the tradition. Even after he turned 102 in April, he held more than 100 cultural and government advisory positions and gave speeches, according to Japanese media reports. History with Sheikh Mohamed In 2008, Sen hosted a traditional tea ceremony in Abu Dhabi, and in the following year, he presented Ryoku-Sui-An, a Japanese tea house in the Capital, to Sheikh Mohamed, who was then the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi. According to the Urasenke Tankokai Abu Dhabi Association, the tea house was "built in the Emirates Palace as a symbol of friendship and goodwill." Sheikh Mohamed also picked up a brush and did calligraphy, writing the name of the tea house and signing in Arabic. In photos taken at the time, the UAE President can be seen carefully making matcha and sharing the drink with Sen.

Joy as UAE pupils achieve record-setting A-level results

Pupils across the UAE were celebrating their A-level results on Thursday, as the number of top grades awarded in the UK hit their highest level outside of the Covid-19 pandemic. Leading school provider Gems Education had a record 1,999 pupils sitting 5,379 A-levels across 22 schools in the UAE and Qatar. This year, 32 per cent of entries were awarded A* - A, up from 26 per cent last year. The proportion of top A* grades also increased to 11 per cent. Lisa Crosby, chief education officer for the group, said the results were "just the beginning." Standout performances included Gems Wellington Academy - Silicon Oasis, which posted an 18-point rise in A*-A grades, and Gems Founders School - Al Mishear, where A*-B results jumped by 27 points. More than a quarter (28.3 per cent) of UK pupils were awarded an A or A* grade, up by 0.5 percentage points on last year. Resilience beyond grades This time last year, Pranaw Lalwani was ready to throw in the towel. He told The National that anxiety over grades had affected his performance. "I got to a point at the end of year 12, I just wanted to walk out," he said. After sitting down with his parents and teachers at Jumeirah College Dubai, he decided to persevere and brought his grades up to gain a place at the University of Madrid. Beyond the grades, he said he had learnt a critical lesson in resilience. The National joined Pranaw and his classmates at the GEMs school, emotion filled the main reception as students collected white envelopes with their grades ready to be opened at the stroke of 11am. The parents of Rayyaan Rabbari were elated at his results which have secured him a place studying engineering at University College London. "I haven't seen him in month," Rabbi, Rayyaan's mother told The National. Food is delivered to his door as he was so focused on the exams. Beyond grades Brighton College Dubai also celebrated its strongest results yet, with A* grades surging to 28 per cent – almost double last year's 15 per cent. More than half of all grades were at A*-A and 80 per cent at A*-B. Several pupils, including Arvand Zare, Shaurya Kumar and Vibha Kumar achieved the coveted three A* grades. Vibha told The National that while she was "still in shock", at the outstanding results, on reflection it was the school environment that made the biggest difference, with the smaller class sizes at Brighton College allowing for more one-on-one time with teaching staff. "Previously I was in a pretty big school where the year group size was about 300-400 people," she said. "My classes at Brighton ranged from about five to 13 people." Simon Crane, headmaster at Brighton College, hailed the achievement as "among the best in the UAE", crediting the school's culture of striving for excellence. Hannah Aly, a pupil at Brighton College Abu Dhabi, received a much-coveted score of four A* grades. She said the key to success comes from planning to study early, as "that way it'll be less stressful once exams actually come around." Graduates will now head to elite destinations including University College London, Edinburgh, Toronto and Paris's renowned Gobelins animation school. Eloi Roberts, an A-level student at Brighton College Al Ain, has his heart on a career in Architecture. But for now he has a big decision to make - weighing a placing in the UK, or at home in the emirates at UAE University as the built environment industry is moving at a rapid pace. Elsewhere, at Repton Abu Dhabi, 43 per cent of all A-Level entries were awarded A* to A grades and 72 per cent of all entries at A* to B. At sister school, Repton Dubai 31 per cent of entries received A*to A grades, and 62 per cent of grades awarded A* to B. Dubai British School Emirates Hills also posted its best A-level results, with the school's principal highlighting the "determination, resilience and commitment" of pupils.
