Kleinfontein about 'culture, not race', Afrikaner community says
A small delegation from the MK party led by Mzwanele Manyi visited the Afrikaner enclave.
The white Afrikaners-only community in Kleinfontein said, contrary to belief, that Kleinfontein is an apartheid enclave; the area is about culture, not race.
This comes after a visit by members of the MK party, led by Mzwanele Manyi, conducted an oversight visit to Kleinfontein, a settlement of 1,500 Afrikaner residents near Pretoria, amid growing concerns over racial exclusivity cloaked as cultural self-determination.
Section 235
The MK party said it suspects the settlement is abusing Section 235 of the Constitution, which allows for self-determination for communities of shared common cultural and language heritage.
The Kleinfontein community said that while they hold different opinions from the MK party, they appreciate the visit.

About Kleinfontein
Kleinfontein spokesperson Dannie De Beer said, 'apartheid and Kleinfontein cannot be mentioned in the same sentence'.
'Apartheid is long dead, buried, will never ever return again. Kleinfontein is all about culture, it's not about race, and it's a pity that the news has to grasp and confuse culture and race.
'The concept of joining apartheid and Orania or Kleinfontein or any other settlement in one sentence is contradictory. How can you be in support of your culture and automatically be a racist?' De Beer asked.
Donald Trump's offer
De Beer said it's unlikely they will be taking up US President Donald Trump's offer to be refugees despite their troubles.
'I think the fact that Donald Trump is recognising the Afrikaner and recognising that there are certain components of the South African law, the discrimination against the Afrikaners, that's welcomed.
'Will the Kleinfonteiners en masse move to America, I don't think so…' De Beer said.
In March, Trump offered an expedited pathway to US citizenship for white South Africans, falsely claiming that the government was confiscating their land and calling their treatment in the country 'terrible.'

'Fleeing SA'
According to Trump, 'any farmer' who is 'seeking to flee South Africa for reasons of safety' can now apply to become a US citizen, rather than a refugee.
'South Africa is being terrible, plus, to long-time farmers in the country. They are confiscating their land and farms, and much worse than that. A bad place to be right now, and we are stopping all federal funding.
Trump signed an executive order last month halting federal aid to South Africa after President Cyril Ramaphosa signed the Expropriation Act, which the US president said imposes 'unjust racial discrimination' against white Afrikaner farmers.

Parliament's Constitutional Review Committee receives more than 250 proposals to change the Constitution
CAPE TOWN - Parliament's Constitutional Review Committee has received more than 250 proposals to amend the Constitution. But it could take up to a year to decide how many of them are worthy of the attention of the committee which is currently still dealing with legal opinions on submissions made during the previous administration. ALSO READ: ActionSA proposes constitutional amendments to stem SA's immigration problems Co-chairperson of the committee, Glynnis Breytenbach says it's an arduous and painstaking process the committee will now embark upon after the deadline for submissions closed at the end of last May. The Constitution was last amended in 2023 to include sign language as an official language. Prior to that, the Constitution had not been amended since 2012 after an attempt to amend Section 25 to allow for land expropriation without compensation in 2021 flopped without the two thirds majority required by the National Assembly. Breytenbach says some submissions exceed 100 pages, and Parliament's administrative and legal staff will have to categorise the submissions depending on their substance. "It's not a must that the committee must find matters that must be brought to the National Assembly. If none of them are of any significant import, then we will again call for submissions." Breytenbach says it could take up to a year to grapple with these serious submissions. "Even that takes a long time because then you have to find the space for those people to come and present. You have to hear all the presentations. The pros and the cons." Among submissions received by the committee deal with the consequences for impeached individuals which Breytenbach says warrants Parliament's urgent attention.

US travel advisory reveals 'bigger issues at play' in diplomatic ties

Image: AFP The United States government has revised its travel advisory to South Africa after President Cyril Ramaphosa met with Donald Trump at the White House, raising concerns that these may be further attempts to paint the country as a no-go zone. This latest level 2 travel advisory warning its citizens to be cautious when visiting the country, issued on May 27, comes hot on the heels of Ramaphosa's recent visit to Washington where he and his delegation pleaded with Trump to reconsider some of his recent views about a white genocide in South Africa. The advisory urges American citizens to exercise increased caution in South Africa due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping. 'Violent crime is common and includes robbery, rape, carjacking and mugging. There are also "smash-and-grab" attacks on vehicles. Violent crime is more common in the downtown areas of big cities, especially after dark. "Kidnapping is a threat in South Africa. Kidnappers target US citizens and other foreign travelers to steal money. Captors often force victims to withdraw cash or give online account passwords before they are let go. International relations expert Dr Noluthando Phungula said the US was trying to vilify South Africa as part of a bigger issue. The reality is that there are numerous issues that have caused strain, including the Israel-Palestine conflict, BRICS expansion and perceived alignment with Russia and these differences may be well be among the reasons behind Washington's lashing out against Pretoria. "We cannot deny crime remains a major challenge for the country, but the US is capitalising on this defect in painting SA as a no-go zone. Crime in this country remains a huge challenge which is closely tied to the stark inequalities. This reality continues to fuel the negative perceptions of the country," Phungula said.. South Africa has been added to the list alongside Namibia, Botswana, Belgium, Greenland, Denmark, and Germany. Level 2 indicates moderate risk, unlike Level 4 'Do Not Travel' advisories issued for countries such as Sudan and the DRC. The latest advisory comes more than a year after the US State Department issued another updated Level 2 travel advisory to South Africa in February 2024 in which it warned its citizens to exercise increased caution in the country due to crime and civil unrest. Responding to the alert, Minister of Tourism, Patricia De Lille indicated that context is important as South Africa remains one of the most safe and stable countries in the world. "We respect the sovereign right of all nations to provide guidance to their citizens travelling abroad. We also acknowledge the recent meeting between Presidents Ramaphosa and Trump and the subsequent media coverage that has followed. However, it is important to offer broader context and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of all visitors to our country. Furthermore, the advisory states that there is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity, in South Africa. "Due to the risks, U.S. government employees working in South Africa must obtain special authorisation to travel to many informal settlements (townships) in and around Cape Town. U.S. mission staff must use fully armoured vehicles when visiting and visiting hours are limited to 10am to 3pm," it states.

Afriforum to take Tshwane metro to court to challenge newly approved city cleansing levy
JOHANNESBURG - AfriForum is set to take the Tshwane municipality to court to challenge its newly approved city cleansing levy. Last month, the Tshwane council passed its annual budget for the 2025 / 2026 financial year, which included the introduction of an additional monthly charge to residents using private waste collection services. The controversial monthly fee will be levied on all properties that do not currently use the metro's refuse removal service. This means some residents will pay an extra R194 a month for the cleansing levy from 1 July. Adding to mounting backlash, AfriForum said it plans to seek a judicial review of the council's decision and file an urgent interdict to prevent its enforcement.
