Indiana football position preview: Why Elijah Sarratt is one of Big Ten's best pass catchers

Yahoo31-07-2025
BLOOMINGTON — Indiana football opens fall camp on July 30 as Curt Cignetti and crew look to build on the foundation they laid with an historic run to the College Football Playoffs.
The Hoosiers were once again active participants in the transfer portal, but they also retained many of the key faces behind last year's success. We're taking a position-by-position look at the roster this week, starting with the wide receiver room.
Indiana brings back its two most productive receivers while looking to add some fresh faces to fill out its two-deep. This staff has a history of identifying talent at the position — will they strike gold again in 2025?

Why isn't Elijah Sarratt getting more national attention?
Indiana football wide receiver Elijah Sarratt ranked No. 1 among FBS true juniors in receiving touchdowns (29), No. 2 in receiving yards (2,847) and No. 3 in receptions.
Here are some other notable numbers — he has one reception in each of the games he's played in college (37) and 11 career 100-yard games.
The competition he's faced has gone up each year, but he's improved his game at a faster pace. He went from earning FCS Freshman All-American honors at St. Francis (Pa.) to garner All-Conference honors the Sun Belt and Big Ten.
Much of the attention Sarratt got during IU's run to the College Football Playoff came when he revealed his teammates had nicknamed him 'Waffle House.' It's an apt moniker, but there should be more focus on his impressive career trajectory and production.
He's one of the most important players on IU's roster going into 2025.

Indiana looking to homegrown talent to provide depth in the slot
Indiana's coaching staff loaded up at slot receiver ahead of the 2024 season, and the move paid off with Myles Price, Miles Cross and Ke'Shawn Williams combining for 104 receptions, 1,1238 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns. They were almost completely interchangeable — Williams seems to be the biggest red zone threat — with each of them developing a strong rapport with quarterback Kurtis Rourke.
The Hoosiers had a ready-made recruiting pitch to potential replacements but initially only signed one transfer slot receiver (Tyler Morris). They only added a second (Jonathan Brady) because Morris suffered a season-ending knee injury during spring camp.
Did the market change, or was it more of an internal shift in strategy? Or a combination of both?
Cignetti talked about cross-training guys more than they did last year to build the depth they had last year. He could also lean on true freshmen a bit more, an option that gained a bit of traction after he praised early enrollees Lebron Bond and Myles Kendrick throughout camp. Bond fits the profile of his predecessors at the position as a former decorated sprinter in high school.
Will Indiana football sophomore Charlie Becker jump the line?
Indiana only has a handful of true sophomores on the roster, and only one of them plays on offense, a distinction that belongs to wide receiver Charlie Becker, a former three-star recruit out of Nashville, Tennessee.
Becker's primary role was on special teams last season, but his size (6-foot-4, 204 pounds), athleticism (he won a series of state titles in track) and attention to detail positioned him to land a more prominent role in 2025 as one of IU's outside receivers.
The Hoosiers had five receivers with 20-plus catches and 300-plus yards last year, and any hope they have of matching that number will mean Becker reaching those milestones.

Lakers jersey history No. 3 — Jeff Lamp

Through the 2024-25 season, the Los Angeles Lakers have had a total of 506 players suit up for them, going back to their days in Minneapolis. Some were forgettable, some were serviceable, some were good and a select few were flat-out legendary. As the Lakers approach their 80th season of existence (they were founded back in 1946 as the Detroit Gems in the National Basketball League), LeBron Wire is taking a look at each player who has worn their jersey, whether it has been a purple and gold one or the ones they donned back in the Midwest during their early years. Here's a look at Jeff Lamp, a forward who played for the Lakers in the late 1980s. Lamp played four seasons at the University of Virginia, where he earned two first-team All-ACC nods and averaged 18.8 points a game. The Portland Trail Blazers took him with the No. 15 pick in the 1981 NBA Draft. In his first five pro seasons, Lamp was a decent bench player for the Trail Blazers, Milwaukee Bucks and San Antonio Spurs. The Lakers signed him as a free agent just prior to the start of the 1987-88 season. He was largely kept on the bench by Lakers coach Pat Riley, but he did earn himself a world championship ring in 1988 and a second trip to the NBA Finals in 1989. During those two years in L.A., Lamp averaged 1.6 points in 4.6 minutes a game during the regular season. The 1988-89 season happened to be his final one in the NBA. For his career, he put up 5.1 points in 11.9 minutes per game. This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: Lakers jersey history No. 3 — Jeff Lamp

Two-way star Hunter makes solid Jaguars debut

Results do not mean too much, but NFL pre-season games do offer the first set of clues about what will happen in the new season. The league's major stars will not play too often in the opening build-up games, but some top rookies have already made good first impressions as competition for starting places hots up. Most of the big talking points revolve around the quarterbacks, but there is also the NFL's 'unicorn' and a new Patrick Mahomes bodyguard worth discussing. Sanders impresses NBA legend James on Browns debut McNamee makes Packers debut a day after US arrival Two-way Travis makes Jaguars debut Travis Hunter signalled his intention to play both offence and defence as he made his debut working as a receiver and cornerback for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The second overall pick of this year's NFL Draft admitted he "was a little nervous at first" as he started one of the most high-profile debut seasons in the league. Hunter had two catches for nine yards in his 10 plays as a receiver before switching and playing eight snaps on defence. Jaguars head coach Liam Coen labelled it a "solid" start and plans to give Hunter more defensive work next week - with the team intent on deploying their talented rookie on both sides of the ball. Talking point - can Sanders earn starting spot? Shedeur Sanders made an eye-catching debut for the Cleveland Browns that raised suggestions he has a chance to be the team's starting quarterback this season. It would be quite the turnaround after his high-profile draft slide down to 144th overall - but beyond the hype he still faces an uphill battle, with veterans Joe Flacco and Kenny Pickett ahead of him along with another rookie in Dillon Gabriel. Cleveland did not field their starters against the Carolina Panthers and Sanders has not had any practice time with the first team - only getting a start on Friday because of injuries to Pickett and Gabriel. But he made the most of his opportunity and despite head coach Kevin Stefanski insisting he was "in evaluation mode" and "not diving into a quarterback competition", Sanders has given him a selection headache. Unique Hunter & divisive Sanders made NFL Draft so intriguing Have Chiefs found the man to protect Mahomes? Patrick Mahomes threw just one pass for one yard in his first outing since being on the losing side in the Super Bowl - but it was for a touchdown in his brief 48-second seasonal debut. So, of more interest was the impressive debut of rookie left tackle Josh Simmons. He is the man the Kansas City Chiefs hope can solve the problem they had all last season - protecting their star quarterback. The Chiefs used four left tackles last year but their issue keeping Mahomes upright ultimately cost them a Super Bowl three-peat as he was sacked six times and manhandled by the Philadelphia Eagles. Simmons showed enough in his first 11 snaps to suggest he could be the answer to their problems. Rookie quarterback watch - Dart on target for Giants Jaxson Dart may just be Russell Wilson's back-up but his impressive debut has excited New York Giants fans singing his praises. He threw for 154 yards and a touchdown and ran for 28 yards in a poised and balanced outing - against some Buffalo Bills starters - that probably just topped Sanders for the best performance by a rookie quarterback. Number one overall pick Cam Ward played just two series for the Tennessee Titans but his second was an 11-play touchdown drive where he showed promising chemistry with top receiver Calvin Ridley. Second-round pick Tyler Shough replaced Spencer Rattler in the second half of the New Orleans Saints' 27-13 defeat by the Los Angeles Chargers and had a 54-yard touchdown pass and a 'pick six' in an up-and-down display. Although not technically a rookie, JJ McCarthy will play his first season with the Minnesota Vikings after a knee injury cost him the entire campaign last year. McCarthy had a tear in his eye before his first game in 364 days, where he led one solid 13-play drive in what could be his only action before the NFL season opener. A comedy of errors for the Cowboys A messy first Dallas Cowboys game for new head coach Brian Schottenheimer culminated with even Pro Bowl wide receiver CeeDee Lamb getting a flag - despite not even being on the field. Lamb was on the sidelines for the defeat against the Los Angeles Rams but strayed almost onto the field and was hit by an official racing down the touchline. That led to Lamb not only taking a big hit but also Dallas getting one of 11 flags in the game, which cost them 83 yards and angered the new man in charge. "I hope the guy's OK. But we have to be better than that," Schottenheimer said. "CeeDee knows better. We know better." Dallas, who have star defender Micah Parsons watching on despite requesting a trade away from the team, will hope that comedy of errors is not a sign of things to come this season. NFL pre-season - week one results Indianapolis Colts 16-24 Baltimore Ravens Cincinnati Bengals 27-34 Philadelphia Eagles Las Vegas Raiders 23-23 Seattle Seahawks Detroit Lions 17-10 Atlanta Falcons Cleveland Browns 30-10 Carolina Panthers Washington Commanders 18-48 New England Patriots New York Giants 34-25 Buffalo Bills Houston Texans 10-20 Minnesota Vikings Dallas Cowboys 21-31 Los Angeles Rams Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25 Jacksonville Jaguars Tennessee Titans 7-29 Tampa Bay Buccaneers New York Jets 30-10 Green Bay Packers Kansas City Chiefs 17-20 Arizona Cardinals Denver Broncos 30-9 San Francisco 49ers Miami Dolphins 24-24 Chicago Bears New Orleans Saints 13-27 Los Angeles Chargers 'I feel kind of old' - Patriots unveil 12ft Brady statue Why is it so hard to break into the NFL?

Dana White's Contender Series: Season 9, Week 1: Odds And Predictions

The ninth season of Dana White's Contender Series kicks off on Tuesday, August 12 from the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. This season, Season 9 of the Tuesday night fight cards runs for 10 weeks. The fighters are competing to earn a UFC contract. Five fights are scheduled for this week's event in three different weight divisions. Since the DWCS began in 2017, UFC CEO Dana White has awarded 287 UFC contracts to the competitors. Last year, in Season 8 of the DWCS , White handed out 42 UFC deals. Three fighters have become UFC champions after appearing on a DWCS card: Sean O'Malley, Jamahal Hill, and Jack Della Maddalena. Season 9, Episode 1 of the DWCS airs on ESPN+ at 7:00 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the matchups, betting odds, picks, and predictions for the August 12 DWCS fight card. Ilian Bouafia Vs. Neemias Santana A middleweight matchup between Ilian Bouafia and Neemias Santana is slated to headline the first episode of Season 9 of the DWCS. Bouafia brings a 6-0 record into the event. He is a 6-foot-five inch kickboxer, who last competed under the Ares FC banner. Bouafia's most recent fight was a February 2025 unanimous decision win over Paulin Begai. The bout marked the first time Boufia went the distance. His previous five outings ended via knockout, with four of those stoppages coming in the first round and the other in the second stanza. Santana is 7-2-1 over his career. He checks in at 6-foot-two. Santana is coming off a second-round knockout win over Marcos Vinicius on a March 2025 LFA card. He is 3-0-1 heading into Tuesday and has not lost since 2022. According to BetOnline, Bouafia is a -260 betting favorite over the +175 Santana. Bouafia uses his length well and uses a technical kickboxing style. As for Santana, he is a pressure fighter, who looks to use his power to wrap things up. The pick is Bouafia to win via knockout, but Santana, thanks to his approach, might be a pick to score an upset KO. Radley da Silva Vs. George Mangos This Radley da Silva vs. George Mangos bout takes place at featherweight. Da Silva (7-1) is a three-time defending featherweight champ under the Battlefield Fight League banner. The 30-year-old last defended that title in January with a second-round submission win over Drew Brokenshire. Da Silva has three submission wins, three decision victories and one KO. His only loss came in his first pro bout in 2013. Like his opponent in this scrap, the 21-year-old Mangos (7-0) is a defending champion. He won the HEX Fight Series crown in 2024 and has defended that belt, most recently knocking out Ethan Thomas in 34 seconds in their March 2025 scrap. Mangos has five submissions and two knockout wins. He has gone into the third round once. The current betting odds for Da Silva vs. Mangos has Mangos listed at -150 and Da Silva at +120. Both of these men are good grapplers, but Mangos might have the advantage there. He is also the better striker. With his better all-around skillset, the betting pick is for a Mangos decision win. Ty Miller Vs. Jimmy Drago In the middle of Tuesday's DWCS fight card is a welterweight matchup between Ty Miller and Jimmy Drago. Miller brings a perfect 5-0-0-1 record with him into the contest. The 25-year-old Miller is coming off a no contest on an LFA card in December. Before that he three knockouts and two decision victories. Drago is a former Ring of Combat champ. The 7-2-0-1 fighter is also coming off a no contest in his most recent matchup, a March 2025 scrap under the Cage Fury banner. Drago has four knockouts, two decisions and one submission win. He has one knockout loss and one submission setback. The betting odds for this bout find Miller at -185 and Drago at +155. The pick is for Miller to score a decision victory. Christopher Ewert Vs. Yuri Panferov Christopher Ewert and Yuri Panferov are scheduled to meet at 185 pounds. Ewert is a perfect 7-0 since making his pro debut in 2022. The 31-year-old was set to make his UFC debut at UFC 317, but a massive weight miss cost him that opportunity and his UFC contract. However, the promotion is giving him a second chance at a contract via the DWCS. Ewert has five knockouts and two decisions. He last fought in January of this year, going the distance on a Fury FC card. Panferov has an 8-1 record. The 28-year-old competed on the DWCS in 2023, losing to Torrez Finney via rear naked choke. Since that setback, Panferov is 2-0 with two knockout victories for CES. He has not fought since November 2024. Three of his career wins are by knockout, and the other five have come via submission. Panferov's most recent fight ended with 10 seconds left in the third stanza. Ewert is a -170 betting favorite over the +140 Panferov. Look for Ewert to be motivated to earn a UFC contract in this matchup after missing weight for UFC 317. He should be able to exploit the gaps in Panferov's striking and get a knockout win. Baysangur Susurkaev Vs. Murtaza Talha Opening Season 9 of the DWCS is a middleweight fight between Baysangur Susurkaev and Murtaza Talha. Susurkaev is the biggest favorite on the card at -350. He has an 8-0 record with seven knockouts and one decision. The 24-year-old is coming off a knockout on a February Fury FC card. The only question about Susurkaev is that he is taking this fight on short notice. The 29-year-old Talha fell short in 2023 when he had an opportunity to earn a DWCS deal. In that matchup, Rodolfo Bellato knocked out Talha in the second round. Since then, Talha is 1-0 with a win over Oleg Klimov who was 0-1 as a pro. So, it is a bit of a head scratcher as to why he is getting a second look on the DWCS. Talha is a +275 underdog. The pick is for Susurkaev to pick up a knockout win. We will have more on Season 9 of the DWCS as the events take place. On Tuesday night, we will have results, reactions and contract winners for Season 9, Episode 1 of the Dana White Contender Series.
