Netherlands, Oman launch consortium for innovation
The Netherlands and Oman, building on a longstanding history of successful collaboration, have embarked on a transformative new partnership with the establishment of the RENEW (Research and Education Network in Energy and Water) consortium.
Supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Muscat, this initiative brings together leading institutions from both countries to address pressing challenges in energy and water sustainability.
A consortium agreement will soon be signed by all participating parties, complementing the already established His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Academic Chair at Utrecht University.
The Oman participants include the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources, NAMA Services, Sultan Qaboos University (Environmental Centre, Sustainable Energy Research Centre, and Water Research Centre), Sohar University, Nizwa University and GUtech. Additional higher education institutions, companies and authorities are also expected to join the consortium to further maximise its impact.
From the Netherlands, Utrecht University - represented through the His Majesty Sultan Qaboos Academic Chair of Quantitative Water Management - will serve as a key partner and will work to engage other Dutch higher education institutions and industries in the initiative.
Commenting on the launch, Stella Kloth, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Oman, said: 'The embassy applauds the establishment of the RENEW partnership. We stand in support of knowledge exchange between our countries on today's urgent challenges in energy and water. The RENEW agreement not only exemplifies this commitment, but also aligns with the objectives set out in the 2022 Memorandum of Understanding in the field of green energy.'
Dr Amir Raoof, Chair of the Sultan Qaboos Chair of Quantitative Water Management, emphasised: 'This consortium will work towards bridging the gap between disciplines, which is essential for tackling water and energy challenges.'
Prof Ghassan al Kindi, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation at Sohar University, added: 'The parties in this consortium will join forces to accelerate the development of innovative and impactful solutions to the water and energy challenges.'
The RENEW consortium will focus on prioritised projects in the fields of energy and water, with expected outcomes including the development of new technologies and methodologies to address real-world challenges.
The partnership also aims to promote knowledge dissemination and raise awareness about sustainable practices, equipping the next generation with the skills and motivation needed to drive environmental innovation and sustainability.

Airlines suspend flights after Israel strikes Iran
Below are some of the airlines that have cancelled their flights to and from the region: AEGEAN AIRLINES Greece's Aegean Airlines has cancelled all flights to and from Tel Aviv up to and including the early morning flight on July 12, as well as all flights to and from Beirut, Amman, and Erbil through the morning arrivals of June 28. AIRBALTIC Latvia's airBaltic said all flights to and from Tel Aviv until June 23 had been cancelled. AEROFLOT Russia's Aeroflot said it had cancelled flights between Moscow and Tehran, and made changes to other routes in the Middle East after Israeli strikes on Iran. EMIRATES Emirates said it had cancelled flights to and from Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, and Iran until June 15. FLYDUBAI Flydubai said it had suspended flights to Amman, Beirut, Damascus, Iran and Israel. ISRAIR The Israeli airline said that due to the closure of Israeli airspace it was cancelling all its flights from and to Israel until June 15. ITA AIRWAYS The Italian Airline said it would extend the suspension of Tel Aviv flights until July 31. LUFTHANSA GROUP Lufthansa said it had suspended all flights to and from Tel Aviv and Tehran until July 31 and to and from Amman, Erbil and Beirut until June 20. The German airline added that it would also avoid Iranian, Iraqi and Israeli airspace for now. PH, Nova Scotia seal labor deal to boost OFW protection and job opportunities
The Philippines and the Canadian province of Nova Scotia have signed a new agreement aimed at strengthening the protection, welfare, and employment opportunities of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s directive to enhance labor cooperation and promote safe migration. The agreement was formalized on June 9, 2025, through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed by Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) Secretary Hans Leo J. Cacdac and Nova Scotia's Minister of Advanced Education, Brendan Maguire, at the DMW office in Mandaluyong City. 'This partnership reflects our shared commitment to a labor migration system grounded in dignity, fairness, and opportunity. We hope this will serve as a model for future bilateral labor accords,' said Secretary Cacdac. The MOU focuses on ethical recruitment, skills development through partnerships with institutions like TESDA and PGH, and reintegration programs for returning OFWs. It also ensures lawful migration pathways, particularly in key sectors such as healthcare and construction. Minister Maguire lauded Filipino workers for their dedication and compassion. 'Filipinos are among the most hardworking and community-oriented people I've had the pleasure to work with,' he said, noting that 58% of job orders from Nova Scotia are in healthcare and construction. An initial batch of 120 candidates is covered by the agreement, with 42 job orders already in place. Nova Scotia also committed to hiring more Filipino healthcare workers in the years ahead. Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary Jose Victor John Gonzaga expressed strong support for the initiative, reaffirming the DFA's commitment to protecting migrant workers and fostering global cooperation. 'We stand shoulder to shoulder with Nova Scotia and DMW as we usher in this new era of collaboration,' Gonzaga said. SCCI underscores need for facilitating trade missions to Ethiopia
Strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties The Chamber also seeks to strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties between the UAE and Ethiopia, as part of its strategic vision to expand the outreach of its trade mission throughout Africa. These remarks were made during a meeting, held at SCCI's headquarters, between Abdallah Sultan Al Owais, Chairman of SCCI, and Aklilu Kebede Erena, Consul General of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia in Duba and Northern Emirates. The meeting was attended by a number of SCCI board members, alongside Abdul Aziz Al Shamsi, Assistant Director-General for Communication and Business Sector at SCCI; Dr. Fatima Khalifa Al Muqarrab, Director of the International Relations Department at SCCI, and several officials from both sides. Discussed ways to strengthen economic partnership During the meeting, both sides discussed ways to strengthen economic partnership between Sharjah and Ethiopia. They underscored the potential for expanding investment and trade in key sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, technology, and infrastructure. They also addressed the importance of co-hosting economic events, including exhibitions and conferences that bring together business communities from both countries, thereby fostering the exchange of expertise and supporting the growth of mutual investments.4 The efforts can by further reinforced by the Memorandum of Understanding signed between the Sharjah Chamber and the Ethiopian Investment Commission (EIC), which provides a strategic framework for enhancing bilateral economic and investment cooperation. He added that these positive outcomes pave the way for broader economic and trade collaboration between the two friendly nations, enabling both sides to capitalize on their diverse investment opportunities.
