Former Gunner finally completes return to England
Former Gunner Chuba Akpom's summer transfer saga is finally at an end, with the striker joining Ipswich Town on loan with a purchase clause included. Photo via Ipswich Town have confirmed the signing of former Arsenal striker Chuba Akpom, with the 29-year-old joining the club on an initial loan deal. Though Ipswich don't mention any more than that loan, Ajax confirm that the English club have an option to buy. Sky Sports News report that the terms of the purchase clause are that Ipswich will be obligated to buy for £7m if they're promoted to the Premier League by the end of this season. 'I was really excited when I heard of the interest and I'm delighted to have joined a club with such big ambitions,' Akpom said. 'I watch a lot of football and have always thought Ipswich would suit my style, so this move makes perfect sense.' Photo by BART STOUTJESDIJK/ANP/AFP via Getty Images Though he's ended up at Ipswich, Akpom could have signed for any one of three Championship clubs this summer. Birmingham City initially opened talks over a loan deal, agreeing the same £7m obligation to buy that Ipswich ended up getting. Then Middlesbrough entered the mix, hoping to re-sign their former player for another year. Overseas, Olympiacos were also interested. Middlesbrough failed to agree a deal, so Akpom began to travel to Birmingham. But at the last minute, Ipswich made their move and Akpom decided to join them instead. Birmingham City were keen to avoid their deal being hijacked, so they made a new offer of a permanent transfer for £6m. Ajax were on board, but Akpom had already completed his Ipswich medical and made it clear he was no longer interested in the Birmingham move. Photo via Lille on Instagram In the middle of that transfer saga, Birmingham City actually played against Ipswich Town on the pitch, a 1-1 draw in the Championship season opener. Akpom's deal wasn't done in time for that game, so his first opportunity for a debut will be in the League Cup away to Bromley on Tuesday, August 12th at 20:00 BST. Ipswich then face Southampton on Sunday in his first possible game back in the Championship.

McKenna gives latest on Akpom chase, Hutchinson absence and Cajuste fitness
Ipswich Town manager Kieran McKenna says he is hopeful of the club completing a deal for Ajax striker Chuba Akpom. The Blues hijacked Birmingham City's attempts to land the former Middlesbrough man on loan earlier this week. There were fresh reports, ahead of Town starting their Championship season with a hard-fought 1-1 draw at Birmingham tonight, that Turkish side Trabzonspor were now looking to swoop for the 29-year-old. "To be honest, I've not been across it massively," said McKenna. "My latest understanding was it was sort of a deal that all parties were trying to push through and wanting to do and I've not heard anything to the contrary for that. I'm waiting for some feedback from the club." Town did sign Jens Cajuste yesterday, the Swedish midfielder returning for a second loan spell from Napoli. He was registered in time to feature tonight, but didn't travel with the squad. "It definitely came too soon for him," said McKenna. "He arrived really late. I've only seen him for about 15 seconds since he since he joined. I've had plenty of phone calls. "He's going to need a little bit of time, hopefully not too long, getting up to speed. To be honest, he's not had a proper pre-season with Napoli. So it's going to be a balance between getting him contributing as quickly as possible and also setting him up for a long, hard season. We've got to get that balance right over the next few weeks." Town star Omari Hutchinson also didn't feature tonight. Ipswich have rejected £35m bids from Brentford and Nottingham Forest for the England U21 international this summer and he subsequently didn't travel for a pre-season friendly in France as he was 'mentally not in the right place'. On his latest absence, McKenna explained: "He's not very well. He had a throat infection. It's nothing untoward or anything like that. He was in training Monday and Tuesday, getting ready for the game, then had to go home with a temperature and a throat infection. Hopefully he'll recover over the weekend." Jaden Philogene also wasn't in the Blues' matchday squad, having suffered an ankle injury in the last game of pre-season. "We feared that it might be a little bit longer, but he's progressing pretty well," said McKenna, whose team go to League Two side Bromley for a League Cup first round tie on Tuesday night. "We have to see how he goes into next week."

'Really, really harsh' - Birmingham boss left fuming at penalty decision in Town draw
Birmingham City boss Chris Davies was left fuming with two 'harsh' decisions which he felt cost his side victory against Ipswich Town on Friday. The newly-promoted home side dominated most of the game against Town, but had to settle for a point after George Hirst coolly slotted home a penalty in added time. That was awarded after a cross into the box deflected off the hand of Lyndon Dykes as he jumped to try to clear the danger. READ MORE: And Davies said: 'I thought it was really, really harsh. He's gone up and obviously his arms are raised – you have to raise your arms to jump – and it's scraped his fingers on the way down. "It's really harsh. I would be surprised if anyone doesn't have that opinion. That's happened now, we just have to take it. 'It's made a huge impact on the game because we were one-nil up with a couple of minutes to go. That's football, it can happen.' George Hirst kept his cool to level from the spot late on (Image: PA Sport) Davies added: 'We were the better team, we dominated the match, and we deserved to win the game but for misfortune with a decision." The Birmingham boss also lamented a decision earlier in the game which saw Kyogo Furuhashi adjudged to have fouled towering Town defender Jacob Greaves before he lobbed the ball into the net just seven minutes in. READ MORE: "Again, I thought it was harsh," Davies admitted. "You only have to look at Kyogo to see the size of him compared to the centre-back. For me, that one looked harsh. 'The good news is that is what Kyogo is capable of. He was trying to make the right runs and was disciplined in his performance. I'm really happy with him.'
