Perez homers twice, Witt goes deep in hometown for 1st time as Royals beat Rangers 6-1

ARLINGTON, Texas — Salvador Perez homered twice, Bobby Witt Jr. went deep in his hometown team's ballpark for the first time and the Kansas City Royals stopped a six-game losing streak with a 6-1 victory over the Texas Rangers on Tuesday night. Seth Lugo struck out a season-high nine for his first win since May 1 as all three active Kansas City All-Stars from last year's Midsummer Classic at Globe Life Field returned to Texas and had a hand in ending the team's five-game skid against the Rangers. Lugo (4-5), who threw a scoreless inning in the American League's 5-3 victory last July, gave up three hits and a run over six innings in his return to Arlington. With the Royals coming off an 0-6 homestand that matched their longest losing streak of the season, Perez hit a two-run shot for a 3-0 lead in the first inning. After adding an RBI double in the fourth, Perez connected for his eighth homer of the year, a solo shot that made it 6-1 in the sixth. Witt also homered off Jack Leiter in a matchup between sons of former major league pitchers. Witt grew up in the Dallas area, where Bobby Witt settled after spending 11 of his 16 big league seasons with the Rangers. Leiter (4-4) is the son of Al Leiter, who had a 19-year major league career. The rookie right-hander gave up eight hits and six runs — both matching season highs — in 5 2/3 innings. The Rangers equaled their season high by striking out 14 times. Texas rookie Alejandro Osuna had his first career RBI in the fourth. Perez had his 18th multihomer game, breaking George Brett's franchise record. Kansas City's Kris Bubic (5-4, 1.92 ERA) faces Patrick Corbin (4-5, 3.66) in a matchup of lefties Wednesday. ___ AP MLB:

Phillies Trade Idea Sends Alec Bohm to AL Contender for Ideal Return

Phillies Trade Idea Sends Alec Bohm to AL Contender for Ideal Return originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies will have some questions to answer at the trade deadline. Whether they look to buy and sell some remains to be seen, but there could be a scenario where the Phillies aim to improve while also trading a player or two from their lineup. Advertisement After an offseason of rumors surrounding Alec Bohm, it might be possible that the Phillies would move on from him if they got a package they loved in return. For a team as good as the Phillies, who look to be in a position to compete for a World Series, they can never use enough arms. If they want to move on from Bohm, they have to find a replacement at their base, but they could also look to add another starter. Looking at potential options for teams around the league, Jim Bowden of The Athletic recently linked Bohm to the Seattle Mariners. Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm (28) hits a two run home run against the Tampa Bay Rays in the second inning at George M. Steinbrenner Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images The Mariners need a corner infielder, and with their surplus of young, talented arms, there's reason to believe there could potentially be a trade to be made with Philadelphia, even if it means the Phillies have to move on from another prospect or big league player. The Mariners are a tough team to evaluate. There have been times throughout the past few years when they've looked to be an excellent squad, but their offense typically struggles. That's been the case for them again over their past 10 games, going 3-7. 4.5 games behind in the American League West, the Mariners need to get a move on if they want to compete in the postseason. Orion Kerkering 'Could Be' New Closer For Phillies According to Rob Thomson

Orion Kerkering 'Could Be' New Closer For Phillies According to Rob Thomson originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies have some major question marks in their bullpen. Due to the poor play of Jordan Romano and the 80-game suspension for Jose Alvarado, the Phillies will see a vastly different bullpen down the stretch than they had to start the year. Advertisement One of the biggest changes that could be coming soon is the team's closer, or their 9th inning role. Previously, Romano and Alvarado alternated based on the opposing team's lineup, but after their game against the Miami Marlins, Rob Thomson is considering making a big change. According to an article from Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic, the Phillies might be going with Orion Kerkering in the 9th for their closer role going forward. When asked if Kerkering would get more chances to close games, Thomson provided an interesting answer. "Could be," said Thomson. "He's throwing the ball great." This comment from Thomson came after Kerkering, against the Marlins, earned his first save in his career. He pitched a clean bottom of the 9th, bookending a strikeout with two groundouts to secure a 5-2 win. Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson during the eighth inning against the Washington Nationals at Citizens Bank Streicher-Imagn Images On the year, Kerkering has a 2.54 ERA and a 5-2 record. He's pitched 28.1 innings and has struck out 26 batters while walking 16. From how he started the year in April, his numbers have made a massive turnaround. Advertisement In April, Kerkering had a 6.52 ERA while blowing three saves in just 9.2 innings pitched. It was a rough month for Kerkering, but since May, he's been incredible. Since May first, Kerkering has a 0.53 ERA and 15 strikeouts to 10 walks in 17 innings pitched. He earned his first save and notched six holds. Since May 9th, Kerkering hasn't allowed a single earned run. With how great he's been as of late, Thomson is considering making a change in the bullpen to use Kerkering to close out games more often. With Romano and Matt Strahm struggling in 2025, Kerkering might be the Phillies' best reliever. While the team will still likely add a reliever by the MLB trade deadline, for now, it seems likely that Kerkering will be getting more opportunities to close games going forward. It's a big change to the bullpen, but it's one that's been a few years in the making.
