Mandela's legacy lives on in Sandton as Nurture and Nature Montessori welcomes Growing Seeds Preschool
Nurture and Nature Montessori Sandton opened its doors, and its heart, to children from Growing Seeds Preschool in Berea on July 18.
The school came alive with the cheerful sounds of play, music, and heartfelt connection, as they celebrated Mandela Day.
For many of the visiting children, it was their first experience in a structured early learning environment, and it unfolded into a day of genuine joy, warmth, and shared humanity.
The school's marketing and admissions officer Stephanie Mundell said: 'Today wasn't just about celebration, it was about connection. These are the moments where real learning happens, when children experience empathy, not as a lesson, but as an act.'
The day was filled with hands-on, heart-led activities. The children painted side by side, swapped songs and giggles, shared stories, and formed bonds with new friends, all under the nurturing eyes of educators committed to creating inclusive and meaningful learning spaces.

In these small interactions, ubuntu came to life. 'I am because we are', echoed Nelson Mandela's legacy in the laughter of children, who may come from different backgrounds, but are growing up with the same promise of hope.
'Seeing how naturally the children welcomed and supported one another was deeply moving,' said Mundell. 'It reminds us that compassion doesn't need to be taught, it needs to be shown, shared, and lived.'
More than an outreach effort, the day became a living classroom, where Mandela's vision of a just, equal society found fertile ground in the open hearts of the children.

'As Mandela once said: 'There can be no keener revelation of a society's soul than the way in which it treats its children'. That quote guides us daily,' said Mundell. 'Our job is not only to educate minds but to shape hearts because today's playmates are tomorrow's peacemakers.
'Let's raise a generation that doesn't need to be told to care. Let's raise one that already knows how.'

Mandela Day clean-up sparks ongoing taxi rank renewal in Carletonville
The usually bustling Carletonville taxi rank took on a new look this Mandela Day, as it was transformed into a beacon of community pride and civic responsibility. Volunteers from all walks of life joined taxi operators in a massive clean-up effort on July 18, setting the tone for an ambitious campaign aimed at restoring dignity to public transport spaces. This clean-up, while symbolic of Mandela's legacy of service, was not just a once-off event. It marked the launch of a long-term initiative by the South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) West Gauteng Region, backed by local stakeholders and government agencies. The campaign will continue into October's Transport Month and beyond, with the goal of maintaining taxi ranks as safe, clean, and respected community hubs. 'Taxi ranks are not just places where people pass through. They are vital economic and social centres that serve millions of South Africans every day,' said a SANTACO representative. Volunteers tackled grime, litter, and disrepair, breathing new life into one of the town's most important public spaces. The effort turned Mandela's call for active citizenship into tangible action, while setting an example for similar initiatives in other areas. Organisers emphasised that the vision is one of sustainability, where collaboration between taxi operators, commuters, municipalities, and private partners will ensure continuous upkeep and community involvement. If successful, the initiative could serve as a model for transforming neglected infrastructure into vibrant, functional, and respectful environments across South Africa.

Due to planned maintenance, Eskom has scheduled a nine-hour power outage in parts of Soweto, Gauteng. The maintenance is scheduled for Thursday, 7 August, from 9:00 to 18:00. Eskom said there will be an electricity supply disruption in Soweto due to maintenance that will be conducted on the distribution network. The planned power outage is set to affect customers in Doornkop Blocks 5 and 7, Molapo, Moroka, and Rockville on Thursday, 7 August from 9:00 to 18:00 as mentioned above. 'Eskom in Gauteng conducts planned maintenance on the distribution electricity network across the province as part of its maintenance plan. Maintenance needs to be conducted to service the infrastructure to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficiency of the electricity supply.' For safety reasons, Eskom advises customers to assume that all electrical appliances remain live throughout the power outage.
