Former India Test and T20I captain Rohit Sharma has revealed his father's reaction after he announced his retirement from Test cricket.
"He appreciates red-ball cricket a lot and, obviously, was a little disappointed when I announced my retirement, but was happy as well at the same time," Rohit said at the launch of Pujara's wife Puja's book 'The Diary of a Cricketer's Wife' in Mumbai on Thursday.

Rohit recalled the struggles made by their parents to support their careers.
'Since the day I was born to now, the support of my mother and father has been immense. I know the sacrifices they've made for me and my brother to do what we needed to do in our lives.
'But when you sit back and think about it, you really appreciate what parents go through. When you're at that age, you don't realize, but now, when I sit back and think about it, you understand,' he said.
Rohit further explained how his father was involved in his cricket and his obsession with Test cricket.
"He worked in a transport company. My father was very much involved in sacrificing things so that, you know, we can have our life," said Rohit.
"My father always, since day one, has been a fan of Test cricket; he doesn't like this new-age cricket.
"I still remember the day I scored 264 in an ODI, he was like, 'Okay, well played, well done.'

There was no such excitement from him that it was a world record and all of that.
Explained: Why Rohit Sharma retired from Test cricket
"But even if I used to get good 30s or 40s or 50s or 60s in Test cricket, he used to talk to me about it in detail. So that's the kind of love he had for the game.
"He has obviously seen me go up the ranks. You play age-group cricket, then you pass on to U-19, and then you go to Ranji Trophy, Duleep Trophy, Irani Trophy, India A, and I've done all of that. So he has seen my journey through that.
"I have made it to the Indian team, playing red-ball cricket, not so much white-ball cricket, but that's how the team used to get picked.
"Back in the day, you do well in red-ball cricket and you find yourself first in ODI cricket and then into Test cricket. Now it's a different story. So my father has seen me playing a lot of cricket with the red ball, obviously.
"That's my father, and he has obviously played a huge role in wherever I am today, you know, without their help," he said.

India kick off busy European leg with Dutch test

The Indian men's hockey team will be back in action after more than three months and face off against Olympic champions The Netherlands in the FIH Pro League at Wagener Hockey Stadium in Amstelveen, the Netherlands, on Saturday. It will be a tough test for Harmanpreet Singh & Co as they will be playing the first six matches of this leg of the tournament over a span of just nine days. India will begin their campaign with two matches against the Dutch with a rest day in between. After another rest day, they will play a double header against Argentina. They will then travel to Antwerp, Belgium — about two-and-a-half hours away from Amstelveen — during the rest day, and play another double header against Australia. It's only after that they will get a four-day break following which they will play world champions Belgium twice. Keeping this in mind, head coach Craig Fulton and scientific advisor Alan Tan have worked with the players to get their fitness up to their optimum level over the past few months. And that has involved lots of endurance training, like running up hills or on the tracks and working in the gym. Speaking about it, the coach said on Friday, "I think everything we were pushing for was around being physically conditioned to play against the best teams in the world, starting off with the Netherlands and to be nice and physically ready for them. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is USDJPY on the Upward Move? IC Markets Sign Up Undo That was the whole reason behind pushing as hard as we have. And yeah, we'll see where and how we go tomorrow (Saturday)." However, the great news for the team is that Harmanpreet, who suffered an injury during the Pro League in Bhubaneswar and missed three of the eight matches, is back to full fitness after undergoing rehabilitation and recovery and looked in good spirits ahead of the European leg of the tournament. Besides fitness, the coach has focused on the other areas of the game as well as he said, "it doesn't help running and not being able to convert". "We've been working a lot on different structures — defensive structures and attacking shapes. So we want to see that come out (in their play). And obviously, we have different opponents, so we have different plans against different teams and we want to try and execute as we go," added Fulton during a virtual press conference. It's going to be challenging but the coach is looking forward to helping the team finish on top of the podium — something that India have failed to do so far — and qualify for the 2026 World Cup to be held in Belgium and the Netherlands. In order to do that, Fulton not only has pushed the players during the training sessions but also made them play three practice matches against Ireland in Dublin — of which they lost one and won two. The coach also made the team watch a rugby game — a first for many of the players — which he believes will help the players a bit more "physically". Tom Brady names his Mt Rushmore of GOATs but leaves out a surprising name

Tom Brady just picked his favourites in sports. Source: X It's no secret that Tom Brady is a multitasker; the seven-time Super Bowl champion is a minority shareholder of the Las Vegas Raiders and just launched a new organic, vegan gummies label. And Tom Brady naturally appreciates other perfectionists in sports and recently spoke about his favourite athletes. When Brady was asked about his Mount Rushmore of GOATS, i.e. his pick of the best athletes, he listed several icons from different sports. But what caught his fans' attention was that he omitted a big name who is not just an NBA icon but also a friend. Who is a part of Tom Brady's Mt Rushmore of GOATs? Tom Brady listed Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant, Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy, Shohei Ohtani, and a few other sports legends. Breaking down his picks, Brady said, "Michael Jordan, he was my childhood idol. Obviously, I loved Kobe Bryant," he added. "Still love Kobe Bryant." "Tiger — his competitiveness. What Rory McIlroy has done; I love that. Shohei Ohtani, what he has done, has been unbelievable. Barry Bonds — he went to my high school. I was the biggest fan of his growing up. Michael Phelps, I love him. Michael Johnson. A'ja Wilson from my Las Vegas Aces. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This Gel Makes Mold Disappear Like Magic CleanLix Learn More Undo I love her. She's amazing,' he said. But Tom Brady notable left out LeBron James from the list, which is surprising considering Brady has praised James in the past and LeBron has also admitted to being friends with him. Fans were quick to point out that Brady's omission of LeBron's name was surprising. But Tom Brady won brownie points for mentioning two young icons who have been engaged in something interesting. These two stars are Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark and Chicago Sky forward Angel Reese, whose "rivalry" has been one of the most talked-about storylines in women's basketball. During the 2023 NCAA Women's Basketball Championship, Caitlin Clark (Iowa Hawkeyes) had a record-breaking tournament run while Angel Reese (LSU Tigers) led her team to victory and was able to match Clark's drive and intensity. Reese famously did the 'you can't see me' gesture and pointed to her ring finger during the championship game, which drew some flak and led to broader discussions on how Black female athletes are portrayed versus white athletes. And Tom Brady mentioned their dynamic during his interview. "Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese, this little thing they got going, I love that. It's been really exciting," he noted. Tom Brady has in the past cheered on Caitlin Clark and has also rooted for emerging female athletes, which impressed fans. In another recent interview Tom Brady opened up about the common stereotypes he has been associated with. The interviewer asked him how Brady has often referred to himself as "hyper competitive" and "a psychopath' and whether he approaches business the same way. Brady responded, 'Actually, no. That's what I need help with. And that's why I have business partners who are psychopaths. They cross every t and dot the i's. I approached football in a very different way — I was into the nuances of the sport I understood so well. And I'm realizing that in business, those details are what matter, too. Especially against tough competition.' He further added, 'Partnering with great people in the end is what matters the most. You've got to bet on people who have vision, experience, a great work ethic, and great teamwork. And you know that in business, just like sports, things don't always go your way. So you're always going to have to figure out ways to overcome adversity and beat the competition.'
