5 top new movies to stream this week on Netflix, HBO Max and more (July 22-28)
The biggest arrival is the debut of the long-awaited sports sequel 'Happy Gilmore 2' on Netflix. Adam Sandler is once again donning the hockey jersey of one of his most beloved comedy characters and stepping back onto the green for another round of anger-fueled golf.
Plus, in the premium video-on-demand streaming world, 'Dangerous Animals' and 'Materialists' are hoping to convince you they're worth the rental fee, and they both make a good case for themselves.

'Jaws' is celebrating its 50th anniversary this summer, but if revisiting the Steve Speilberg classic isn't enough shark action for you, you might want to consider 'Dangerous Animals,' which frankly makes 'Jaws' look like a pleasant day at the beach.
While the flimsy narrative has more holes in it than a surfboard chewed by a great white, Jai Courtney's deliciously unhinged performance is reason enough to give this intense thriller a watch.
Zephyr (Hassie Harrison) is a drifter traveling around Australia's sunny Gold Coast who is abducted by a deranged serial killer called Tucker (Courtney) while going for a spot of surfing late at night.

Awaking chained to a bed in the hull of a rusty boat, Zephyr learns that Tucker has an obsession with sharks and feeds his various victims to these sharp-toothed sea creatures while filming the whole thing on a battered old camcorder.
With time running out, Zephyr must find a way to escape and stop Tucker's reign of terror before she can become shark chum.

In 2023, writer/director Celine Song blew me away with 'Past Lives.' It was among my favorite films of the year, and to this day ranks as perhaps the most heartachingly romantic movie I've ever watched.
Her follow-up is 'Materialists,' and while the reception hasn't been quite as universally positive as it was for her debut, I'm still very eager to check this out.
More of a romantic comedy than a romantic drama, and mining the well-worn genre trope of trying to find love in the increasingly tumultuous modern dating world, 'Materialists' stars Dakota Johnson as a New York City matchmaker who finds himself stuck in a thorny love triangle.
On one side is the seemingly perfect guy (Pedro Pascal), and on the other is her imperfect ex-boyfriend (Chris Evans). Good luck choosing between them.

I previously named "Until Dawn" as one of the top five worst movies I've seen in theatres in 2025 so far (and I've seen nearly 50 of them), so I can't exactly give this slasher horror a ringing endorsement. But, if you're a huge fan of the 2014 video game which inspired it, or just want a trashy horror that you can watch while also mocking alongside friends or a loved one, then 'Until Dawn' might fit the bill. At least now it's on Netflix, you don't have to pay a rental fee.
This is a video game adaptation that is very loosely inspired by the PlayStation title from which it takes its name, as the characters, setting and location have all been changed. Instead of taking place in a snowy mountaintop cabin like the game, this version of 'Until Dawn' sees a group of friends trapped in a secluded house, and also stuck in a time loop. Each new loop brings a new terror, and it's their mission to survive the night and break free.

'Death of a Unicorn' is a horror-comedy with moments of fun, but it never quite manages to blend the two genres successfully enough to take full advantage of its admittedly novel premise.
It falls into a less-exciting middle ground, and the subpar effects on the titular mythical creatures don't help much either. At least, a solid cast adds some star power with Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega and Richard E. Grant all involved and giving it their all throughout.
The movie opens with a father (Rudd) and his spiky teenage daughter (Ortega) heading to an important business weekend where the former hopes to complete a lucrative business deal. On the way, they accidentally hit and kill a unicorn. Bringing the creature's corpse to the home of the father's billionaire boss kickstarts a chain of increasingly chaotic events.
As the wealthy Leopold family, headed up by the smarmy Odell (Grant), looks to exploit the unicorn's healing properties for personal financial gain, nature fights back as a pack of vicious horned creatures arrive on the scene and cause complete chaos.

Andy Sandler is stepping back onto the green as the long-awaited sequel to 'Happy Gilmore' arrives on Netflix this week. It's been almost 30 years since we last saw Gilmore, but it doesn't appear he's done all that much maturing in those decades. Based on the trailers, this comedy looks just as rage-fueled and loud-mouthed as its predecessor.
Curiously, the plot of 'Happy Gilmore 2' is being kept under wraps, with Netflix itself not even offering an official logline, but based on the trailer, we can surmise that the sequel sees Gilmore come out of retirement and return to the professional golf scene to pay for his daughter's ballet school. It seems a standard setup for a sequel, but maybe there's a hidden twist?
Questions can be asked about whether we need a 'Happy Gilmore' sequel after all this time, but I'm confident this original movie will be a Netflix hit and go straight to No. 1 in the streaming service's top 10 most-watched list.

Amazon overhauls Wondery podcast studio, cuts 110 jobs
(Reuters) - is restructuring the Wondery podcast studio by shifting its award-winning narrative podcasts such as "Business Wars" to Audible and consolidating creator-led shows into a new unit, according to a memo seen by Reuters. About 110 employees will be laid off as part of the process, while many Wondery employees will transition to other parts of Amazon, the company said in an emailed statement on Monday. Wondery CEO Jen Sargent will depart the company following a transition period, the memo said. Intense competition in the expensive podcast industry as well as a growing focus on creator-led video content have prompted audio streaming companies including Spotify to diversify their podcasts as they look to lower costs and attract more users to their platforms. "As video podcasting has grown in popularity, we have learned that creator-led, video-integrated shows have different audience needs and require distinct discovery, growth and monetization strategies compared to audio-first, narrative series," Steve Boom, vice president of audio, Twitch and games at Amazon, wrote in the memo. Wondery was acquired by Amazon in 2021 and has seen podcast revenue quadruple since then as the studio expanded its slate to include video podcasts and creator-driven series, according to the memo. Under the new structure, Wondery's narrative podcast studio - home to shows such as "Dr. Death" and "American Scandal" - along with the Wondery+ subscription service, will move to Audible, the e-commerce giant's audio platform. Its creator-focused podcast team that produces shows including "Mind the Game", "New Heights", and "Armchair Expert" will join a new Creator Services group within Amazon's Talent Services division. This new team will continue to operate the creator-focused podcast studio under the Wondery brand. 'Wednesday'-themed Meal of Misfortune available at Wendy's: See what's in it
Wendy's has teamed up with hit Netflix show "Wednesday" on a new meal the chain calls "pure punishment in a bag." The limited-time meal, unveiled on – you guessed it – Wednesday, July 23, is centered around four mystery sauces called the "Dips of Dread," along with "Rest in 10-Piece" nuggets, small "Cursed & Crispy" fries, and a new Frosty flavor called "Raven's Blood." The items will all be served in custom packaging, according to Wendy's. The meal, called the "Meal of Misfortune," will coincide with the release of Season 2 of "Wednesday" on Netflix. The show will be in two parts. Part 1 will premiere on Aug. 6 at 3 a.m. ET and Part 2 will be available on Sept. 3 at 3 a.m. ET. When and where can I get the 'Wednesday' meal? The items will be at restaurants and via the Wendy's app nationwide beginning Monday, Aug. 4, according to Wendy's. In Canada, customers can get the meal in restaurants or via the Wendy's app starting Monday, Aug. 11. The fast-food chain said the Meal of Misfortune will also be available at Wendy's locations in Puerto Rico, The Bahamas and Guam. Meet the man with the world's best beard — who was crowned best in show at the World Beard and Moustache Championships – thanks to his 11-inch bushy black mane. Trevor Mustafa, 44, has been recognized for his impressive facial hair — which he decided to grow out 'no matter what society said.' Trevor began growing his current beard in February 2023 — before emerging victorious in the best in show category in July. 'But I've been heavily bearded like I am now for about 12 years.' His journey to beard competition glory began unexpectedly after receiving encouragement from admirers both in person and online. 'I was growing the beard out and getting a lot of compliments in person, and then I'd post pictures online and people would tell me 'oh, you should compete',' he said. 6 Mustafa, from Sacramento, California, said, 'I've been growing my beard out pretty much for about 12 years, occasionally cutting it all off and starting over again. His daily routine includes minimal brushing and application of beard oil, while his weekly regimen is more intensive. 'Weekly, I give it a deep conditioning with a hair mask,' he said. 'When I get out of the shower, I use a blow dryer on medium heat to dry my beard first, then apply beard products before combing through with my detangling brush.' Trevor swears by a Crave natural detangling brush, which he describes as 'about $10 off Amazon' – noting it allows him to 'comb through my beard with little to no damage or hair loss'. Maintaining such an impressive beard comes with unique challenges, particularly when it comes to dining. 'Eating is a real challenge. I can't eat ice cream, I can't eat soup — pretty much almost anything – just because of how thick and wide my beard is,' he said. 'I've had to learn to take soft first bites because there's been more than a few times where I've swallowed my beard and been choking myself on it. 6 Maintaining such an impressive beard comes with unique challenges, particularly when it comes to dining, Mustafa said. 'It's not just a beard, but it's a big beard, so it pushes away people that don't like facial hair to begin with,' Trevor said. 'But I'm the kind of person who kind of likes having that filter. I don't judge people based on their looks, and I prefer to be treated that way too. 6 'Eating is a real challenge. I can't eat ice cream, I can't eat soup – pretty much almost anything – just because of how thick and wide my beard is,' he said.
