Coach Johan Ackermann upbeat about future as he takes over at the Bulls
The vastly experienced Ackermann is replacing Jake White, who led the Bulls to three URC finals and the knockout stages of the Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup.
'This team has talent and I believe we can play any style of rugby we want,' said Ackermann, who was part of the coaching staff for the Junior Springboks as they won the U20 Championships in Italy, with their final victory against the Baby Blacks on Saturday.
'We can play the traditional Bulls style and be physical and have good set pieces, but we also have the quality to attack and play all the spaces that the opposition give us.
'My philosophy is to play an exciting and attacking brand of rugby, be positive and score tries. And we have to acknowledge that what the Bulls have been doing must work.

'They have beaten good sides and reached playoffs. I do feel there were moments where I would probably want to change a few things tactically, and once I get used to players and understand our strengths as a team, I can then bring my own flavour in.
'This has been a quality performing team for the last few years already, so that is a challenge for me — to make sure we keep performing with the quality of this squad.'
Coaches of the leading South African franchises have a balancing act to perform ensuring their teams compete well in the URC and Champions Cup.
'There will be the challenge of managing this squad across various competitions, as is the norm for the modern-day coach. There will be the challenge of the always-high expectations on this team,' Ackermann said.
'The expectation is high and it brings a different pressure on this position. You can feel there's not a lot of room for error. But I can only be myself and enjoy this and through that we can keep that standard going.'
The coach said he will first look internally to find a winning formula.
'If something is not quite clicking, then I normally look at the team's values. If as a team you've put out certain values at the beginning of the season and one of those is not going well, then it will reflect on the field.
'It's not about chasing the outcome or the result or the position on the log. It's about looking and seeing if there is something small we're not doing as a team.
'Finals are won on such small margins and I've experienced losing finals. It's very difficult to judge the outcome of a final from the outside if you haven't been involved in that week's preparation with the team for the game.
'Then from a tactical point of view, it's about going back to the principles of the game and seeing what we're missing. It's about what we control now — the next training session, the next scrum, the next breakdown.'

Currie Cup result: rampant Bulls outgun Western Province
The Bulls scored six tries as they claimed a bonus-point victory. CAPE TOWN, SOUTH AFRICA – JULY 26: Boeta Chamberlain of Vodacom Bulls during the Carling Currie Cup match between DHL Western Province and Vodacom Bulls at DHL Stadium on July 26, 2025 in Cape Town, South Africa. (Photo by Grant Pitcher/Gallo Images) The Vodacom Bulls ran in eight tries and flyhalf Boeta Chamberlain put in a flawless kicking display to completely out-muscle Western Province in their north-south derby in Cape Town. Scrumhalf Zak Burger and No 8 Jeandre Rudolph each scored a brace of tries as the Bulls registered a 48-23 win at the Cape Town Stadium, to get their Currie Cup campaign off to the ideal start. The Bulls struck early through maul dominance. Hooker Joe van Zyl and Burger crossing in quick succession before flyhalf Kyle Smith's boot and sharp intercept try from fullback Shilton van Wyk pulled WP back to 14-13. Sintu Manjezi's reply restored momentum for the Bulls, who capitalised when the hosts were reduced to 13 men, with Rudolph powering over for the Bulls' bonus-point try. WP Captain Zain Davids and locks Gary Porter and Alex Groves all saw yellow in the first half. The Bulls took a 38-16 lead into the sheds, but it was Province who came out stronger in the third quarter. Winger Courtnall Skosan rounded off some solid build-up play from the hosts and there were hopes of a revival. But Rudolph's second try and Chamberlain's boot made sure that the result was never in doubt. The Bulls next host the Sharks at Loftus, while WP travel to Ellis Park to take on the Lions. Star-studded Bulls see off brave Western Province in Currie Cup clash
Bulls Currie Cup coach Phiwe Nomlomo will be happy with their start to the season following their win over Western Province. The Bulls put in a workmanlike performance to beat a brave Western Province team 48-23 in a Currie Cup match in Cape Town on Saturday evening. Bulls coach Phiwe Nomlomo's side came into the match as heavy favourites after selecting a very strong team filled with a lot of quality and experience. While most of their United Rugby Championship players are resting or with the Springboks, they still managed to field seasoned pros such as Marvin Orie, Boeta Chamberlain and Sintu Manjezi. Province, on the other hand, fielded seven debutants in their run-on team, including a few Blitzboks, who have been roped in to bolster their squad in the absence of their Stormers and Springbok players. And it was clear from the first minute that Province were going to be under the pump, especially at set-piece time. The Bulls scored five of their six tries in the first half, dominating the collisions and getting penalties as Province tried to stop the bleeding.

Bulls bully WP with brutal forward dominance
The Bulls overpowered Western Province 48-23 in Pretoria, using their forwards to dominate territory, scrums and the scoreboard throughout. The Bulls wasted no time asserting their dominance, scoring from a rolling maul through hooker Joe van Zyl in the fifth minute. WP responded with a penalty by Kyle Smith, but Zain Davids' yellow card left them exposed against the relentless Bulls' pack. Scrumhalf Zak Burger took full advantage of the overlap, darting over for the Bulls' second try after continuous attacking pressure built. The Pretoria men conceded a restart penalty, allowing Smith to close the gap again before Shilton van Wyk struck for WP. Van Wyk intercepted a loose pass and sprinted away to score against the run of play, energising the home crowd briefly. However, the Bulls hit back with another powerful maul and Sintu Manjezi powered over to silence the fans once again. Province's discipline collapsed under pressure, losing both locks to yellow cards as the Bulls' scrum turned the screw with clinical precision. Jeandré Rudolph picked up the fourth try off a dominant scrum, as WP were reduced to six forwards and little resistance. Despite Chris Smit's yellow card for cynical play, the Bulls stayed in control as Burger scored again before halftime approached. Boeta Chamberlain then slotted a penalty just before the break to stretch the lead to a comfortable 22-point advantage. Province looked sharper after the restart and Courtnall Skosan finished a flowing move to add some hope for the hosts. But Rudolph had the final say, collecting his second try after slick interplay near the line broke WP's fragile defence wide open. Chamberlain punished WP further with a late penalty in the 78th minute, closing out a complete and ruthless Bulls performance. WP will need massive improvement before facing the Lions, while the Bulls look well-oiled ahead of round two next weekend. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 0211.
