New Delhi, Jun 20 (PTI) A fugitive with a 12-year-old Interpol red notice against him and wanted by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with a fake currency racket was extradited by the UAE on Friday in an operation coordinated by the CBI, officials said.
Beary was wanted by the NIA in a case of counterfeiting Indian currency notes, cheating and criminal conspiracy.
He was arrested in the UAE in 2015 and since then his extradition proceedings were going on.
He allegedly procured high-quality Fake Indian Currency Notes (FICNs) in Dubai and transported the same to Bengaluru through Sharjah.
'The CBI got the Red Notice published against the subject on December 30, 2013, through Interpol on the request of NIA. The accused subject was arrested in the UAE and an extradition request was sent to the UAE through MHA and MEA,' the spokesperson said.
The NIA said that soon after the recovery of FICNs from four different locations in Kasaragod district in Kerala, it secured the revocation of Baery's passport and a red corner notice was also issued.
'In 2015, the absconding accused was located and arrested by the UAE authorities, following which an extradition request was sent to that country by the NIA. On completion of the process, the UAE authorities extradited the accused on June 19,' the NIA said in a statement.
NIA investigations into the case revealed that Beary, a native of Karnataka's Udupi district, conspired with the co-accused to procure high-quality FICNs with a face value of Rs 31 lakh from the UAE, it said.
'The FICNs were trafficked into India by another accused, Usman, by flight through Bengaluru. The accused then circulated the FICNs in and around Kasaragod district,' the statement said.
The NIA has so far chargesheeted six accused, including Beary, in the cases under various sections of IPC, it said. PTI ABS AKV ARI

Mumbai: CBI has registered a case against Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) officials and Tata Consulting Engineers (TCE), a project management consultant, for allegedly causing Rs 804 crore loss to govt in a contract to increase the depth of the channel for large cargo ships. CBI was carrying out searches at several premises at the time of going to the press, report Vijay V Singh & Reeba Zachariah. The FIR mentions "preparation of inflated estimates, restriction of competition to favour international bidders, extension of undue favour to contractor and suppression of reports of independent experts/organisations". CBI conducted searches at Tata Consulting Engineers' (TCE) Mumbai and Navi Mumbai offices and took "some materials from the locations", sources said. It says the loss was spread over the dredging project's two phases – 2003-14 and 2013-19. To accommodate large cargo ships, in 2003, JNPT appointed TCE to prepare the phase 1 project report for the cost estimates and time duration. TCE was also awarded the work of project management consultant, including preparation of tender documents and supervision of work. The FIR stated, "Shadow bidding arrangements to support the cartel made by BoskalisSmit India LLP and Jan De Nul Dredging India Pvt Ltd were permitted by Madabhavi in connivance with Bose… and other unidentified individuals, thereby enabling the cartel to participate in the bidding process." During the probe, it was found that the pre-dredge survey was manipulated by using the less accurate software 'Qinsy' instead of the globally accepted 'HYPACK' for measuring dredging quantity, the FIR said. CBI claimed that the two phases were planned back-to-back, and their implementation overlapped, though on record, it was mentioned that they would be taken up separately. JNPT had assigned the project report on Phase 2 to TCE in collaboration with E&Y and Howe Project. "Several stringent project qualifications criteria and tailor-made specifications were inserted in the Phase 2 tender documents to eliminate Indian bidders . ..and to the advantage of the international bidders. Such changes were made to allow bidders forming JVs or consortiums to compete for complementary bidding against the Competition Commission of India guidelines," the FIR said.

Kolkata: Aimed at enhancing transparency and security in the passport verification process, Bidhannagar City Police has made it mandatory for all passport verifications to be conducted under camera surveillance — either through body cams during home visits or CCTV systems in police stations — from this month. The move comes at a time when Kolkata Police is investigating a fake passport racket and have arrested a retired sub-inspector for allegedly clearing applications without proper enquiry and adequate verification. Officers said the move will also help them reduce complaints from residents about officers, civic volunteers and middlemen demanding money or harassing applicants in the name of additional documentation. "Now, all passport verifications are being conducted under body camera surveillance. In the case of home verification, only representatives from the Special Branch are visiting the houses of applicants, and the entire process is being recorded. The footage is being stored until the passport is issued.
